Pokémon Essentials, version 10 - 22nd October 2012
Download

Now it's time for the other kind of overhaul.

So what's new?

A Whole New World
  • Those dingy old example maps needed a bit of a touch-up, but I went quite a number of steps further. Say hello to the Essen Region! 72 maps(!) filled with all kinds of goodies, including several features I invented specially for them (including an elevator, cracking ice, Apricorn conversion/fossil reviving, a much-improved bridges system, and so on). I've also codified via examples a number of other features you may not have known how to do properly, such as battling your rival, pushing boulders down holes, changing a Pokémon's form, using particle effects, and so on. This is the first time I've done any mapping, but I think it's gone all right.
FRLG FTW!
  • The new example maps demanded new tilesets in order to look their best. So I made some. I ripped them all from FRLG (plus a few from RSE like the really long grass and berry patches), put them all together, polished them up and called them tilesets. I did the same for the charsets, notably the Cut trees/Rock Smash boulders which are now animated. While I was doing that, it seemed only fair to also use FRLG trainer types only - move over, Roxanne, I'm gonna Brock your world! All tilesets are fully defined, so all you need to do is get drawing.
The Town Map Jigsaw
  • Ever wanted to not show something on the Town Map until you've been there? A secret island or some such? Well, now you can! You can now paste pictures onto the Town Map depending on whether particular Global Switches are on. In other Town Map news, you can now easily define which region's map to look at, and whether the map is a wall map. A wall map is one found hanging on the wall (no kidding) in places like Poké Centres. Those extra pictures I just mentioned can either always or never be shown on a wall map, in case you want that feature (e.g. if you're colouring in visited towns as you go, a wall map should always colour them all in).
Shadow Pokémon Sorted
  • Yep, they work now. If you give a Shadow Pokémon multiple Shadow moves, it will have them all from the start. They also relearn moves properly now, can no longer be affected by things like Rare Candy, Move Tutors and breeding, and battles carry on normally if you snag one. Be warned, though: if an enemy trainer uses a Shadow Pokémon, it's going to know all its moves (Shadow plus regular ones). A semi-related new feature is that, if you define a move with 0 PP, it behaves as an infinite-use move.
Lots of Little Things
  • I can't see any other big things that warrant their own paragraph, so I'll bundle a bunch of things into this one. Roaming Pokémon actually literally honestly work this time. Pokémon now have their B2W2 movesets, and all Gen 4 & 5 Move Tutor moves now appear in tm.txt. You can now show the player how many coins they have as easily as you can their money. A number of script sections have been tidied up, including a change in the order of end-of-round effects in battle. pbChooseItemFromList is a useful method I don't want to be overlooked. When you put an item in a Bag's pocket, the message now contains that pocket's icon. Triple Triad got a big improvement.

And yes, many other little things and bug fixes as usual. There was one bug I only discovered because of my work on my TCG project - it doesn't ever appear in Essentials itself. Check out the change log on the wiki for full details of what's happened this time.

Enjoy!

Oh wow! A new release! Must go play with it NOW!

Kind of sad too though, I was about to report a bug in the previous version. I'll see if it still happens.

Hahaha Lappet town(Pallet town Maruno Remix)! Nice job!
One of the things I noticed though is that once a pokemon uses (fly, dig, dive, etc) the sprite doesn't disappear, then reappear when it has to(I know cuz it wasn't even programmed yet).

nice release...
some small issues that i noticed while playing with it...
game crashes after talking to the guy in the starting house and choosing "Showing extra things" (at the end of the dialogue)
in the game corner the character from which you get the Coin Case says that you can exchange your coins next door with prices...
well there is no next door... xD
if i find something else i will add it...

just saw the apricorn tree...
never would have thought you would use the headbutt tree as a placeholder... :D
there are no apricorns in FRLG but if you are looking for HGSS overworlds here they are:
http://www.mediafire.com/?ljb2x26825y5xto
well actually these are all the HGSS npc overworlds including the apricorn trees in rpgmxp format...
i am sure you will find a use for them...

The <img> message option was one I found, but obviously I don't know how it works. Just ignore/delete it.

There's no Game Corner shop because there's no script that allows you to trade items/Pokémon for coins. I chose to leave it like that.

I don't care about Apricorn tree graphics. The user can decide how they want to tackle them. Also, what part of the repeated mentioning of "FRLG" suggests that HGSS graphics would be fine?

Revamp the GSC apricorn tree, or use the RSE's berry trees ?

yeah a game corner shop isnt needed...
everyone who has a little experience with events can do it himself but a shop would make the game corner more "complete"...

well of course the style would not fit but it would prevent the misunderstanding that the "headbutt tree" is just a headbutt tree you know?
ahh and if we are at the matter...
why did you choose the FRLG graphics over the HGSS graphics?
if you are missing the HGSS tiles i can provide them... :D

Because It's always been FRLG.
If people want HGSS in there game, they put them in themselves. It's not Maruno's problem what graphics people prefer.

There's also the fact that FRLG tiles are simply easier to get, are definitive (i.e. can be ripped directly rather than created by tile artists), include all tiles needed to make a game (because they have been used to make a game), were specifically designed for non-pseudo-3D games (and so suit Essentials better), and I went to the trouble to do it.

Fancy new graphics are not essential, and it's perfectly possible to create a game with only what Essentials has. It is a fact that a game made using the default tilesets will stand out from other games by virtue of it just existing. As an example of what can be done, I created 73 maps in 2 months, as well as spending a significant amount of that time doing other things instead (everything else in the change log, compiling graphics, etc.) or simply not working on Essentials. I hope this becomes an example of what is possible. People smegging around with their own graphics and all that are really just wasting time - a fangame shouldn't take years to create.

i dont have a problem with FRLG but if Maruno already gone through the trouble of rearranging/ripping the FRLG tileset he could just improve the graphics with HGSS tiles...
and i dont know what other people want... <.<
i just think about essentials in general and with HGSS graphics it will definitely look better!

But essentails is suppose to be a base for the codes for pokémon.
Half the tileset was FRLG anyway. You're wanting him to ad HGSS from scratch, which is pointless, if you've got it, put it in yourself.

dont know what your problem is...
i just ASKED Maruno why he prefer FRLG tiles...
i never said i want him to add it or something like that...
and putting it in myself is pointless because i dont want it for myself... <.<
i just wanted to point how to improve the appearance of essentials...
if you think it was a selfish request i dont know what to tell you anymore...

First of all, thanks for making this Maruno. I tried it and it looks awesome :D

I got these errors so far:

I get this when I try to check the area in the Pokedex

I figured it was a typo so I changed "mapppos" to "mappos" in the script and it worked.

And something that I just noticed today in both version 9 and 10, is that the game crashes when I use Dive. What may be the problem?

It certainly is a typo.

The methods pbUpdateVehicle and pbCancelVehicle should always have a Kernel. in front of them. I missed them out.

I changed them all to Kernel.pbUpdateVehicle and Kernel.pbCancelVehicles in the script PokemonHiddenMoves but still crashes. Is that what I was supposed to do?

That's what I did, and it works for me.

First, I prefer gen 3 graphics that the newer ones, but disagree by the point that, at least, 80% of Essentials users will change the tilesets/charsets by the newer ones, so use HgSs. Don't use it is like to swim against the current.

I say stick with the FRLG tileset you have. There are a million different fan made tilesets out there and people will always pick a different one no matter what you put in. At least this way you have one from an actual game. Focus on the mechanics more than the aesthetics at this point.

This was never up for debate. Essentials will use the FRLG tiles, for the many reasons I stated. It's everything you need to make a game - it may not be the most visually appealing game to you, but it'd still be a game.

Anyway, enough talk about tilesets.

This makes you sound kinda rude but since you are developing the project by your lonesome and working your butt off you have every right to come off the way you do....

good work, I am sure your hard work will be well appreciated(by most)...

I haven't actually been able to start on my planned project yet, but the Town Map update sounds like just what I needed... thanks for all the hard work, and I hope to be able to actually work with this stuff someday.

If people want to change tilesets they can do that themselves. Essentials isn't about being beautiful, it's about giving you what you need to make a Pokémon game. If you want to do more with it, do it yourself.
