Let's say you've gotten a device that allows you to completely erase one video game from existence (and this can be any game; whether it be an online game or not), never to enter the minds of people ever again.

Now, with such a device, what video game would you remove, and why? Then again, would you use this device at all? Why or why not?

One video game and not one whole serie? Aw man lol.

I would say Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. That game is just ugh... no one should ever be tortured to buy and play that game. No one.

Any Call of Duty game. Doesn't matter which.

I'd go with Call of Duty 1. It was a good game, and so were 2 and 3 (and 4), but the games latter went on to influence the masses, and as such, the industry, and the cons of that certainly outweigh the pros. I feel that if Call of Duty had never been released, gaming may be in a completely different/better place right now.

Maybe.

There's always the chance that another game would come along and do the same thing, having the same effects...but I doubt any could have the effect CoD does.

Though, the chance of me using the vice for any reason other than that is incredibly low, it would alter the future far too much, and it may reject the existence of some of my favorite games, regardless of whether they were my targets or not.

Mario Bros.
I don't like the franchise, so now you can't have fun either!
It would be interesting to see what people revere in its place; hopefully not something I see as so contrived.

I'd erase Sonic 2006 because it's just that terrible. Not only did the gameplay reek because the understaffed team rushed development for the holiday season, the relationship between Elise and Sonic was ridiculous. Why did Sonic's 15th anniversary game focused on him running molasses slow and carrying a human princess? Shadow had a better story there, something that should have been implemented more in his own game (another game I could erase, but in my youth I did enjoy it more than 2006). I own MANY Sonic games, but I only rented 2006. It's so not worth the money. At least one can't really find 2006 it in stores/xbox live anymore.

I never really got into the Mario games, either. I have the first one on the NES, some spin-offs (good games), but Galaxy and the spherical platforming confused me.

World of Warcraft. I'm a massive MMO fan and all of the people I usually play with always migrate back to WoW.
I just can't get into it. I don't enjoy the content or the look of it at all (compared with Aion or GW2).

I would not remove any game, even bad games are to good to show what not to do.

Though I would like to get rid of one of the massively loved games that I feel get too much praise (FFVII, Ocarina of Time etc).

^ I would not remove any game, but yet removes one xD

I would remove Action 52. That cartridge cost waaayyy too much money for games that are horrible and mostly composed of space shooters AND also there's like 3-4 games on that cartridge that doesn't even work.

I would remove either Superman 64, due to its infamous status as the worst game ever made, or the first Call of Duty, in order to prevent future CoD titles from being made so the franchise doesn't tarnish the FPS genre.

Remove games that are universally loved and near-revolutionary because you think they're overrated? Why?

For me its gotta be

Only because I keep being reminded that we won't ever get a game like it, and that if we do get a sequel it will never top this game. ;_;

Seriously though, I'd go with

One of the biggest hyped game of last year, and the game did not deliver. What a disappointment. It combined two huge series into a game that destroyed many people's expectations with weird design choices and stupid business practices. Hope TxSF is actually good.

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

This game can be summed up by its most memorable quote.

What about this game?

Superman 64? That's what I'd remove. I kid you not, it was a pretty terrible game, imo. I mean, the majority of the game is like, flying through rings. It's like Star Fox in that aspect, but, even in Star Fox, you don't have to fly through all of the rings. Plus the controls are really, really awkward; you'd have to be precise with the N64 joystick, or else you'd be flying all over the place. @__@ I just... ugh, really hated those rings. XD

I dunno if I'd remove terrible games like Superman, and Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde. Reason being, those are the games that people play to form an opinion on what makes a game bad and helps us to avoid those same mistakes. They make the industry better because of how bad they are. They tell you how not to program controls, how not to develop a story, and ultimately, how not to make the player's experience unenjoyable. I mean, they're bad, really bad, but it is in that badness that we learn how to create good, and they supplement good games in teaching us how to make things right.

Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

For me I'd have to say either Turok or Too Human for the 360, before playing those games I still had faith in humanity.

Now I think about it, if I were to give a thoughtful answer to this thread it would probably be WoW, for breeding the attitude players have about what makes a good MMO. I listened to WoodenPotatoes talk about this in one of his videos recently, and I feel I've come to realise that the sort of consumer base WoW has created is a major roadblock against the progress of the MMORPG genre. Not that I'm heavily invested into the genre, but there is a lot of room for creativity within it that developers could and should take up.

I agree with you. WoW creates a sort of standard for MMOs, which isn't a bad thing by itself, but because of the standard its set and the consistency in which it sells and is played, other developers try and make similar experiences and limit how much creative freedom they'll give themselves. This ultimately limits an industry and saturates it with a lot of games that are similar but have various minor to intermediate differences, but when you get down to it, in a way, you are still playing World of Warcraft.

I think this is the case with Call of Duty and the FPS genre right now, as well as the Fighter genre with Street Fighter (I don't know if that's the best example, though), but to a lesser extent.

WoW is a good one. Another reason would be because it made a lot of people far too addicted to it making it severely unhealthy. I feel it's a game that we're better off without.

FPS and MMOs existed before CoD and WoW. Street Fighter, on the other hand, defined the fighting genre, and made it better and what it is today. Though there are cases were anime 2D fighters are bashed in tournaments, but I think that has more to do with them than Street Fighter, because King of Fighters and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 are hugely (and rightfully) popular. SFxT is also hated.

Thinking about it, maybe Marvel vs Capcom 3 shouldn't have existed and we should have just gotten Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 in the beginning. :P Much more balanced and better. (Though we could have gotten MvC3's original UI.)

Here's a game that makes me think "wait, why do you exist?" I wouldn't erase it though, since I LOVE it.

On the other hand, this shouldn't have existed.

Before I look like a Sony fanboy (:P), I love Halo, and Halo 3 is one of my favorite games. But this game killed the franchise for me, and to a lot of people.

Of course they did, but these two have influenced developers, for better or for worse, to limit themselves (creatively) to "what works", in this case being Call of Duty and WoW. As such, quite a few elements that exist in the aforementioned games persist throughout many other games, exhausting what was unique and turning it into something that is somewhat dry and overused.

I know about that. My point is that they didn't make the genre though, like Street Fighter 2 did, they just set a questionable standard for it, so I didn't feel it was fair to name it. It's a lot more like Super Mario Bros' influence with platformers (as in, positive influence), and is also still the undisputed king of the genre.

Party a case of 'stop liking what I don't like' and partly because it would be interesting to see what games take their place.

I'm not trying to say they're the best at what they do, nor are they so good that they make other developers want to emulate them and spin-off from what they did right, if that were the case I would have posted Everquest for MMO and maybe Soldier of Fortune or Medal of Honor for FPS. In the cases of Everquest, Soldier of Fortune, Street Fighter, and Mario, the respective genres were inspired by the games and didn't just copypasta the formula with their own added flair, but instead took a look at what the games did right and tried to incorporate it into their own ideas. At their base, you can feel the Mario or SoF in them, but you are definitely playing a different game.

In the case of WoW and Call of Duty, it's because they sell better than any games in their respective genres (and outside, really), not because people necessarily feel that they're the best or because they actually are, that developers copypasta the formulas and add their own flair to them. I wouldn't say they're standards in the sense that they are so revolutionary in terms of gameplay (and presentation) that developers want to build off of it as they are such a stamp in history in terms of sales that developers want to do what they did to generate revenue, trying to make their games like them without making the games themselves. As such, they are revolutionary and they have influenced an incredible number of games in their respective genres, just not necessarily for the better.

And I'm not trying to say that either. Haha, I agree with you. It's because CoD and WoW set a bad standard for their respective genres that I felt it was unfair to mention SF alongside them, is all. (and yes, I know you didn't say SF shouldn't have existed. :P)
