Vale Institute of Magic

Spoiler:
We at the Vale Institute of Higher Learning would like to extend an offer to continue your school career with us to reach your full potential as a human being. For over twenty-five years, Vale has recognized and worked with students all over the world, helping them to find within them what normal schools would stifle and wither with restricted curriculums and closed-minded faculty. Since admission to Vale is a very selective process, accepting less than three hundred students every year, we hope you can take pride in this offer.

By joining us at Vale, you will become a member of a diverse and dedicated student body to hone your unique talents and abilities. We'll help you accomplish this with dynamic, flexible classes and interactive staff.

Included with this letter is a small collection of information regarding our orientation for new students, living arrangements and the facilities available to you after being issued your student ID.

We sincerely hope that you accept our offer to join us at the Vale Institute of Higher Learning, and I look forward to personally meeting you at the start of the fall semester.

Best wishes,
Paul Sandford
Director of Student Affairs

Background

On July 19th, 1941, a phenomenon occurred that changed World War II, and the entire world: denizens of Earth discovered that they could use magic, bending nature to their will. Not only that, but they found their bodies more durable, and capable of handling the extreme strain of controlling the elements. This was quickly put to use in medical, physical, and technological research under now-famous names such as Einstein; but more importantly it found a place on the battlefield. Magic's first offensive use in the war had been December 7th of that year, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The French immediately surrendered. Magic went on to become a major part of the war; the atomic bombs dropped on Japan had been crafted by earth mages, and the various elements had been used in place of conventional weaponry for the few who could wield it. On top of controlling the elements, mages had found that they became much more durable than before, their bodies harder to burn, blast, and penetrate than their normal counterparts, and for longer periods of time.

In response to the destructive nature magic posed to the world, at the end of the war the United Nations, in correspondence with the governments of various countries, had worked to keep public recognition of magic to a minimum. Conspiracy theories abound, magic soon became truly known only to mages and government officials. With the rise in mages and the Internet, however, it was necessary that institutions be built for the sake of isolating young mages and teaching them to control their abilities before they became a threat to anyone's safety, and before magic as a whole had to be revealed to an anxious public. Various government-funded boarding schools were erected across the world, and the United States alone now has 21 academies working in concert with surveillance networks to find as many magically-endowed citizens they could find. The oldest of these is the Vale Institute of Magic, known to non-mages as the Vale Institute of Higher Learning.

Located somewhere in the High Plains of the western United States, the Vale Institute of Magic is one of four high schools, ranging from grades 9 to 12, and is currently run by a powerful mage named Kristen Vale. Through any means of communication they can muster, Vale contacts young adults around the country (and sometimes in other countries) and invites them to complete their schooling at the Institute, providing not only control over one's magical prowess for use in battle and many recreational pursuits, but the full benefits of a well-funded education system. Roughly a thousand students attend at any given time, and they're typically accepted into their college or university of choice, or as apprentices for multiple vocations where they can put their magic and education to productive use. Needless to say, magic academies are pretty great.

Attendance comes with some hefty risks, though. While Vale has some of the best medical mages in the country (only surpassed by the US government), students could lose their lives, much like if every student was equipped with a loaded gun. Rumors also tell that the headmistress isn't as righteous as most believe she is. Some believe she has some hidden agenda for the students and faculty of the school. But that's just a rumor.

You are a student who, one way or another, was invited to the Vale Institute of Higher Learning for the start of a new school year, offered the best education the United States could offer. You may be new to your powers, or a seasoned veteran of the magical arts. You'll be making new friends, and learning about magic, yourself, and things about the world you may not need or want to know.

The School

Main Building: To the north end of Vale's campus is the main building, a fairly simple rectangular brick-and-mortar building standing three stories tall. First year students’ classes and faculty offices are on the first floor, along with the cafeteria; infirmary; and the entrance to the gymnasium, which doubles as a basketball court. Both the cafeteria and infirmary are found in the east, while the gym is located in the west wing. The cafeteria offers a wide selection of professionally-prepared food on its own, as well as a few kiosks that give students quick access to Subway, McDonald's and Pizza Hut. Kitchen-inclined students have culinary classes here. The second floor is made up by second and third year classes, and the third floor holds the headmistress' office and fourth year classes. Classes are based on years of study at Vale (and in some cases experience), rather than being segregated by age.

Magic Fields: Along with traditional sports fields found immediately west and east of the school, behind the building to the north is a collection of eight magically-charged battlefields (about half the size of a football field) tended to by a small group of Vale staff, including a groundskeeper to allow students to practice using their magic in various environments.

Recreation Center: The recreation center is the place to go if you want to have some unconditional fun on campus. You can find all sort of stuff here, such as TV, games, and some athletic equipment for the more physical students. The school's 50-meter swimming pool is located here. Half of the pool is inside while the other half is outside, and both are separated by a sheet of glass to keep the outside from getting in.

Dorms: There are two gender-specific dorm buildings on the south side of campus, with the boys' dorm to the southwest, and the girls' southeast. Student rooms are furnished with two twin-sized beds, two computer desks (including a MacBook Pro), two dressers, a closet, and a full bathroom. They can be decorated however students wish, and they can even exchange their desk or bed.

Ridgeton: The school is found at the center of a small, magic-filled town only about ten miles wide. Still, Ridgeton houses many magic-oriented residents, and a few restaurants, shops, facilities, and even a strip mall and movie theater. Students can work at these locations for extra money, and their student IDs double as debit cards. Vale rewards students with an allowance based on positive performance, behavior and achievements during their time at the school.

Magic

No one really knows where magic came from. Some scientists theorised that magic leaked in from a neighboring universe or alternate dimension, lending to their belief in various multiverse theories. Others dug into the existence of qì, the energy that flows through all living things. Others also turned into religious nuts. What we do know is that magic allows humanity to control and manipulate the natural world in ways most could only dream of. Magic users are known as mages.

There are four base elements from which all magic blossoms, and anyone can learn:
  • Fire
  • Earth
  • Water
  • Air

Most people (about 90% of humanity) aren't born with the ability to use magic, but with determination (or should they undergo trauma), they can learn how to use it. The lucky ones, however, find that they operate on a certain "wavelength", so to speak, which makes them compatible with a magical element from birth, but they may not even realize they can use it, leaving less than 5% of humanity capable of using magic. Academies like Vale exist across the world to raise that number and make it conducive to human progress.

With time, talent, and training, a mage's element evolves, taking on new forms. An ember becomes a spark of electricity, a bundle of stone hardens into a ball of steel or blooms into nature's bounty, water freezes over or seeps into the skin and recovers it from damage and stress, and the invisible air solidifies into smoke and vapors.

There are three other elements to magic, but they are not taught at Vale due to their rarity, and they cannot be learned. These mages are "chosen" by the element they wield by overwriting their original magical wavelength, and may very well have controlled one of the four elements before the new one supplanted it. They are named the Light, Darkness, and Spirit elements, and supersede one's ability to use the natural elements.

Light and Darkness wielders are able to manipulate the power of light, or the lack thereof. It's not unheard of for a Light mage to literally become a beam of light or make a solid shield, or for a Darkness mage to sink into the shadows or make a spear. Although their individual abilities and limitations are aligned with the four natural elements, no one really knows what would happen if Light and Darkness mages could combine their efforts.

Spirit mages, however, don't have control over the physical world. Spirit mages manifest their force of will. By generating and using their own energy, rather than that of the elements surrounding them, Spirit mages can achieve a variety of feats, from mimicking the properties of other elements to increasing the abilities of other mages. With diligence, patience and years of practice, officials believe the few Spirit mages there are would be able to transcend the limits of a physical body; they are power personified.

I'll put everybody down for reservations. Nakuzami, using the same character is fine, but there are quite a few changes in the magic department (and other areas of the SU), so a direct copy is unacceptable without edits.

Time to dust off my Jerkwad GM Hat.

Here's a Shion v3. (I don't like the number 2, so I skipped it. Don't ask why. Version 3 sucks, but it sounds cooler than 2.)

Spoiler:

Shion Kavanagh — 16

Element: Air, Vapor

Spells

Push | Simply a pulse of wind to propel Shion, granting her high mobility and allowing her to have full control of her movement and positioning. By focusing continuous light pulses, she can also effectively levitate. It's here just because of the frequency of use, rather than being something unique to Shion.

Cover | Shion protects herself by constantly circulating air around her limbs and vital points, providing a cushion against both her opponent's attacks and the collateral damage from her own strikes. Whenever her fists make an impact, the cover releases a small burst of air for extra punching power.

Empower | Accessing air as a concept, rather than just as a physical element, Shion grants herself various new passive abilities. She becomes significantly lighter and more flexible—making it seem as though she can even fly without any assistance—and can use subtle movements in the air to slip through the tightest grasp at the cost of her protective cover and even some of the durability normal mages possess.

Elemental - Sylph | ???

Appearance

Standing at 5'7, Shion sports waist-length copper hair and wide, steely blue eyes. Her face is offset by pink cheeks and small, pouty lips that tend to express the opposite of her eyes. Adding to a well-toned figure from years of physical training, completing the package is her rather light skin and perhaps oddly slender fingers, with only a bare hint of exposure to the sun. Sunscreen and moisturizer does wonders for keeping one looking so untouched by the outside world. (The ability to physically protect herself doesn't hurt one bit, either.)

On most days, a loose-fitting shirt and cardigan that conceals her frame along with an expendable pair of jeans is enough for her, as she "exercises" frequently. During the downtime (which used to be many school days), she's prone to wearing skirts, sundresses and thigh-highs, among other things she finds pretty. (Don't tell her I said that.)

Personality

Shion's personality is... abrasive. She doesn't hold back her words (or her fists), and almost nothing stops her from getting what she wants if she actually wants it. A long-standing competition with her older sister has also led her to going all-out in everything she does. If she's not very good at something, she won't let anyone see her doing it until she's good at it (even to the point that she loses sleep over it). When she's good at it, she knows it and loves to push the advantage, often coming off as conceited or cocky.

She greatly enjoys fights, sports and other physical activities, enjoying the stress release and tests of strength. She even plays a few computer games for the sake of the challenge.

Still, she's genuinely terrible at controlling and understanding her own emotions. Intensely passionate and concentrated on a single thing for hours on end, Shion could be particularly flighty at a moment's notice. She could get embarrassed or cocky over the slightest praise, or find herself unnecessarily angry at the way they said it. Shion can also completely miss out on context.

There's just no satisfying her... and probably no keeping her attention without a fight either.

History

Shion's association with magic goes back to her grandfather, Alan Kavanagh—a field medic for the U.S. Marine Corps. during World War II—who began using fire magic around the appearance of mages. Originally, Alan used it to cauterize wounds to get soldiers back in the fight as quickly as possible. However, shortly before the war ended, he developed his pyromancy as a martial art to keep himself in shape. Utilizing rapid strikes and deflection, aided by igniting the air around the fighter's limbs for propulsion and greatly increased striking power, Kavanagh's art was (and still is) a very close-range fighting style designed to cause constant offensive pressure.

In his years mastering his then-unnamed art, Alan married a high-class English aeromancer from Britain, who persuaded him to dub the fighting style "Blazing Dance". While weapons were an option when developing the art, Alan found them too inefficient and unreliable due to the constant use of fire magic.

Alan was able to live in relative luxury with his wife and three children after he completed his years of service to the Marine Corps, opening a gym to train mages and muggles in his fighting style. (He concealed his magic ability for the normies, obviously.) His children all became pyromancers as well, and were taught to control it as soon as they started exhibiting usage. Two of them even found that they controlled air magic as well. His children became Dancers themselves, and their children years later.

Except Shion. Shion was the only one who couldn't use fire magic, being the only one aside from her grandmother who could only use air magic. She faced more than a bit of teasing from her four-years-older sister, Lana, who was favored since their parents were both exclusively pyromancers. Regardless, Shion still took the effort to learn and eventually master her father's Blazing Dance by the time she was thirteen (her cousins being a year or two under when they could claim that feat, and Lana being her stupid, overachieving self at nine). Instead of fire, she started using her aeromancy to reach the incredible strength and speed that the "real" Dancers in her family had.

Obviously, being able to repurpose a highly explosive fighting style for herself never did garner the praise she wanted from her parents, and she began to pursue pure achievements over appreciation, leading her to take up music and engage in virtually every physical challenge she could find throughout middle school, even if she wasn't allowed to use her magic for it.

Shortly before she started her second year in high school, Shion received a letter to attend Vale, at her then-senior sister's recommendation.

And now here's a brand new character(s).

Spoiler:

Luca & Lucia Fera — 15

Elements: Darkness, Water/Ice

Spells Luca

Guise | Shrouding his abilities with color, Luca is capable of mimicking the base elements through his Darkness as if he were able to use all of them naturally, even imitating the exact impact of spells like a fireball or a spike of earth rising from below. Beneath the shroud, however, it's simply an extension of his shadow, and knowledge of this immediately drops the spell's intimidation factor. Or raises it. Perspective, y'know?

Appropriation | Shortly after someone uses an ability, Luca can replicate the appearance and strength, making it seem as if he copied their powers. Because he analyzes and stores the information of the ability used before making a facsimile, Appropriation has a brief delay before it can be used.

Reflect | While taking damage, Luca's body stores the energy used, and can later return that energy in full force. However, the stored energy deteriorates over a short time, and he can only release it offensively through his body rather than his elemental powers.

Equilibrium | ???

Spells Lucia

Mirror Image | Creating a duplicate in her likeness out of solid ice, Lucia hides behind a flurry of snow and uses her doppelgänger to fight at close range. The level of control she has over her double renders her mostly immobile; to rectify this, she can disperse the doppelgänger into water or snow to quickly reposition it and herself without compromising her location.

Pillars | Lucia thrives on the cold, conjuring structures that give off a debilitating chill, and slowing anyone who can't heat themselves back up. Even an ice mage would find themselves sluggish should they lack proper resistance to the frost.

Deep Freeze | Briefly encasing her entire body in a barrier of ice as a protective measure, Lucia releases a wave of freezing energy a short distance over the ground. Anyone caught inside the blast radius is beset by a thick permafrost on their feet and shins. If they aren't able to break out, the ice progressively crawls over their body to imprison them. Any physical strikes to Lucia's personal barrier also shatters the ice, spreading the Deep Freeze over a wide area almost instantly.

Appearance

Luca and Lucia share a lithe frame, held up to 5'4. Between them, they also have the same light white skin tone, a button nose and straight black hair draped just over their shoulders. It's very easy to confuse Luca with Lucia due to his femininity, and vice versa, and they enjoy using that to their advantage if they want a chuckle. To separate the two, Luca tends to leave his hair alone, letting it lay at the sides of his face, and Lucia often ties her hair into a low ponytail. However, the telling difference between them is that Luca's eyes are a bright blue, while Lucia's are a pale green.

Personality

As if it weren't expected, the twins are more than willing to share everything and prefer to stick together, having spent their entire lives that way, and they share a few similar traits. Both are known to be active and rather bubbly; very easy to make friends with, and it's difficult to anger them. However, Lucia is much more explorative, while Luca tends to keep to himself and go with the flow, keeping track of everything so Lucia doesn't endanger herself... or him... or anyone.

With other people, Lucia is also the more social, bringing up conversation or having fun with people wherever she may be. This isn't to say Luca is the more timid of the two, though he certainly acts the part—he's just careful where his sister isn't. Thanks to this, should they be separated, Luca is really the one who keeps his cool (heh), able to calmly read his way through most situations as necessary. Without him around, Lucia has separation anxiety, worrying for her brother's sake, but mostly for her own knowing Luca isn't around to get her out of trouble. As such, she tries to keep him close as much as he keeps tabs on her.

History

Magic has been in Luca and Lucia's family ever since their mother discovered she could use it in her teens. A practiced water mage out of Missouri, Gwen Fera married her high school sweetheart and made her living as a nurse, occasionally using her gift to assist her coworkers when she wouldn't be caught. Their father, Travis, was an English professor at a local university, and had nothing to do with magic until he met Gwen. Even after he was initiated into the hidden world, Travis never really understood magic, and didn't try.

After the twins were born, much of Gwen's abilities went to keeping them from sustaining injuries as Luca and Lucia learned of their own. Lucia developed her mother's water magic, but Luca found that he was only able to fake it, making it look as though he controlled water like his sister. The more he used it, Luca discovered he could see significantly better where light was absent, and he was able to blend into his surroundings like a chameleon. Luca went on to become a champion of Hide & Seek.

While keeping it a secret through the first half of elementary school, the twins were soon invited to attend Trinity Academy in Colorado. There, they improved on their magic abilities among learning the same subjects as normal schools at an accelerated pace. Their magic evolved at the Academy, competing in various subjects and applications with nearly 200 other mages. While Lucia learned ice magic and heightened her defenses, Luca took on the more offensive abilities of the two, using his darkness magic to mimic other combatants and deceive people for a perfect setup. Aside from magic, the twins began playing soccer, and learned how to play instruments. Lucia played percussion, and Luca took up the saxophone.

Once they graduated along with many other Trinity students, they were invited to a secondary magical school to continue their education: Vale.

Spoiler:

Name: Zane Reav

Nickname: N/A

Age: 16

Gender: Male

Element: Light

Spells:

Flashbang: Zane glows for a brief moment then releases a short, yet strong, concussive blast of light that temporarily blinds, deafens, and disorients all living beings within certain proximity of the blast, with the only exception being the user. The easiest way to avoid this spell is to notice when he starts to glow. That is the only warning sign. Due to the nature of a Flashbang, once it goes off, it can be very difficult to avoid without cover. Zane is not entirely immune to the effects of this spell, as the concussive force of the spell can bounce back in small spaces.

Light Beam: Light is condensed into a thin strand of hard-light then fired in a beam. The hard-light beam has the circumference of a .22 caliber bullet, but due to the significantly faster movement of hard-light than a traditional bullet, its strength is on par with .380 ACP round. This spell can be identified by Zane using a finger-gun, but once it has been fired it can be nearly impossible to dodge.

Vector Shift: Zane’s body becomes light for a fraction of a second. This allows him to travel very short distances of two to three feet. While using this spell he is technically not moving, but simply shifting his location. If this ability is used repetitively over an extended period of time the user becomes liable to suffer internal hemorrhaging.

Radiant Guard: A circular shield of light that can have its size altered is formed in front of Zane’s palm. This shield takes on the appearance of a plain buckler, and is completely constructed of hard-light. Normally, the shield is only about a foot long in its circumference to allow flexibility in Zane’s movements. Zane can alter the shield’s size to make it larger, but it requires him to completely stop any movement or spells.

Blade Storm: Inspired by one of Zane’s favorite phone games, Blade Storm is a total of four horizontal blades of light that dance methodically in the air around him. Each one of these swords can be commanded to attack individually or together, though their range is limited to only ten feet away from Zane. The swords themselves are made of hard light, like Zane’s other attacking spells.

Appearance: Zane fits the image of your typical music junky, though nothing quite as far as looking scene or being a hipster. His height and weight aren’t exactly impressive, both resulting in rather average numbers. To be precise, Zane tallies in at 5’ 10”, and weighs a healthy 157 pounds. His build isn’t particularly athletic, but neither is he lanky nor weak. Zane has a fairly angular and slim face, framed by his moderately-lengthy hair that tends to just barely drape over the entirety of his ears. His bangs tend to hang over his eyes if left untouched, though Zane usually sweeps them to either side to prevent any problems. Though not always the first quality noted about Zane, his reddish-brown eyes have been noted for having a relentless inquisitiveness about them.

Zane’s wardrobe is an extravagant feature of his, and arguably one of the few hints towards his family’s wealth other than his last name. Typically, he likes to wear casual dress clothes, such as button-ups and polo shirts, almost exclusively in Mardi Gras colors of green, purple, and yellow. More often than not he’ll pair these bold colors with something monochrome to help alleviate the gaudiness. As far as his pants go, Zane cycles through black slacks and various types of jeans. He has an extreme dislike for shorts and will virtually never wear them unless needed for a specific reason, such as needing swimming trunks for swimming. Two seemingly constants to Zane’s wardrobe are his shoes and headphones. The shoes are simple black low tops, custom made for comfort, but his pride and joy are his headphones. Around his neck sit a pair of large studio-quality AKG Q701 over-ear headphones, ready for use at all times for any music impulse Zane might need quenched. Although it appears that he never changes his shoes or headphones, he actually has a few identical sets, just in case one may need to be replaced.

Personality: If it was ever possible to summarize a person in one phrase, then for Zane it would be this phrase: success at any price. Sadly, it is impossible to describe someone in such a shallow fashion, but it is true that Zane is motivated by his ambitions of grandeur. Zane focuses on a philosophy of cutthroat tactics and an unwillingness to fail. As a result, he’s become quite systematic, decisive, persistent, and aware of what’s needed to win, all of which play a large role in his magic.

Zane’s efforts with magic really display his work ethic. Whether he’s working on creating a new spell or trying to learn a different way to use a current one, Zane is almost always working on making his magic better, and whenever someone bests him, he double his efforts until he can win. His spells are usually inspired by his own ideas, but occasionally he uses stuff from games as a basis. Zane’s application of his spells can prove to be unconventional as well. Even though he does tend to work hard, that doesn’t mean he isn’t rather full of himself.

Calling Zane cocky would be an understatement. He has varying degrees of arrogance, typically when it involves his abilities in magic. Then again, his self-confidence allows him to take risks that others may be less willing to, which can be quite fruitful at times. Even this willingness to take risks has its downsides, though, since it can lead to recklessness if Zane looses his head. These aren’t the only bad tendencies that Zane has been known to display either.

His goals are focused on his own success, he can’t be depended on if he doesn’t benefit from the task, and he is very spiteful towards those who go against him. In other words, he’s rather self-centered. So yes, he isn’t the best person to depend on, but when someone can prove that a task will benefit him then he’ll be relentless in accomplishing his mission, unless it requires him to be punctual.

Zane has always had a bit of trouble with time, rarely knowing the hour of the day or just letting his focus drift away from the clock. His inability to keep track of time is only exacerbated by his refusal to wear watches. Instead, he relies on his phone to tell time, but even that doesn’t resolve the problem, since he rarely gets his phone out without starting up one of the many phone games that he plays. Another one of Zane’s peculiar behaviors is that he is completely inept with any form of handheld device other than silverware and his phone. Normally, Zane displays an enormous amount of agility in his movements, but if he grabs a bat, a sword, or any other similar device, he becomes a buffoon tripping over his own feet. As a result, he is useless in most sports, with two of the only exceptions being soccer and kickball. In addition to these quirks, Zane has a bit of a passion for music. He’s always carrying around his headphones and often listens to his music when focusing.

History: Zane was born and raised in Seattle, Washington to the well-known Reav family. To the public, his family was best known for their enterprise with hydroelectricity. Within the magic world, the Reavs are storied water and ice mages responsible for a large portion of Washington’s hydroelectricity. Zane’s family consists of his mother, Emilia, his father, Karl, and his two older sisters, Alice and Tiffany. With Zane being the only son in his family, he was subject to high expectations. And for the most part, he succeeded in many of these expectations.

Like his father and sisters, Zane discovered his magic before enrolling in primary school. His water magic revealed itself during a family outing to Lake Union, when his mother witnessed him manipulating the wake behind their boat. From that moment onward, Zane was strictly taught how to control his water magic. He progressed with his magic at an impressive rate thanks to his dedication and his father’s forcefulness, gaining a surprising amount of control over his magic considering his young age. By the time he was ten, his magic evolved.

A couple of months after his tenth birthday, Zane’s magic developed into the more complex ice element. Only a handful of Reavs had ever gained ice magic at such an early age, which fueled Zane’s father to push Zane even harder in his studies. With no say in the matter, Zane did as he was told and studied. Although Zane wasn’t particularly against the methods his father used, he did believe they made his life rather boring. In an effort to help make his life a little less monotonous, he took to music and games. Due to his father’s strict rules, game consoles were off limits, so Zane turned to phone games. For the most part, these games and music served their function, but even they could not alleviate the struggle that happened shortly before his fourteenth birthday.

Two months before Zane turned fourteen, his magic disappeared. No one within his family had ever heard of anything like it, but there had been documented cases of people miraculously losing their magic. Apparently, it was a sign that their body had become incompatible with their element, though for what reason was unknown. For six months Zane spent his life without magic, only to discover that he possessed something far greater than his family’s water-based magic: light magic.

Zane’s first experience with his new light magic was one night while he was trying to sleep. He noticed that his body had begun glowing, and when he attempted to focus the magic, it became a ball of light. When Zane first realized that his ice magic was replaced with light magic, he was in disbelief. Not only had he been without magic for a lengthy span of time, his new element was nothing like his previous ones and, as a result, it affected his ability to use his magic. Zane lucked out that his family had no knowledge of his abilities, as it gave him the time to actually develop his skills on his own time. Over the next year and a half, Zane learned how to apply the same techniques of his ice magic to light magic, which became the basis for his hardlight spells.

Soon after Zane developed his spells, he received a letter from Vale. Zane’s parents questioned why an elite magic institution wanted him, to which he displayed his newest magic. They were completely surprised by his revelation, and more importantly, his father was livid. The fact that Zane hid his light magic from his father served as a focal point for Karl’s dissent, but Karl also knew that Vale was an opportunity that could not be ignored. Zane’s father allowed Zane to attend Vale, and with that, he was on his way to the magic school.

Creative freedom, as long as you adhere to the element itself. Fire mages can control fire and temperature (with proper balancing, obviously; for example, if they want to lower the surrounding temperature to freezing point, they'd have to draw in all the heat around their body and raise their body temperature in exchange). Water mages can control water and other fluids, but nothing else unless they've advanced enough to control ice as well.

Also, how does Auron weigh 110 lbs even though he's six feet tall? Unless he's severely undernourished, he should be at least 135, and even that is considered underweight for his height.

Will do, Warden.

As a note, no GM character counts towards the Light, Dark, Spirit counts. In other words, there is still a Light spot available.

Okey dokey! Of course that means my SU will take a little longer, especially since I'm finishing up a sign-up for another roleplay, but that'll give me some time to get a bit more creative! I'll likely keep Alma as an Air mage, but I'll think about the possibilities of becoming a Spirit mage before I make my sign-up. On that note, would it be possible for one to eventually learn something in one of those three special classes of magic later down the line? Even if it's minimal, it could still provide an interesting piece for a character.

It is indeed possible for someone to learn magic from any of the LDS magics. There is, however, a certain set of requirements for these to be gained, and there is a price.

Excerpt taken from the OP: There are three other elements to magic, but they are not taught at Vale due to their rarity, and they cannot be learned. These mages are "chosen" by the element they wield by overwriting their original magical wavelength, and may very well have controlled one of the four elements before the new one supplanted it. They are named the Light, Darkness, and Spirit elements, and supersede one's ability to use the natural elements.

Ahaha, yeah I read that. I just wasn't sure if we'd still be able to learn the special magicks after the sign-up period, since they're supposed to be so special and all. Thanks for clarifying that, though. ^u^;

You can definitely work it out in private with us beforehand, and we'll be happy to help arrange a time that's comfortable with you where Light or Darkness overwrites the original. Spirit magic, though, is one you'd have to have been born with or acquired extremely early because of how it works. :3

However, it's probably easier and much less work for everyone involved to just have it from the start of the RP.

Full Name: Caesar Zeppeli
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Personality: Caesar Zeppeli is a blond, suave ladies' man, as well as a skilled Air Magic user. He is rather cool and collected. As a highly trained individual, Caesar possesses very high physical abilities: along with a large amount of physical strength and proficiency in hand to hand combat, Caesar has an amazing sense of balance and co-ordination. Caesar also boasts a high level of endurance far surpassing normal humans, being able to survive for a few days without food, and taking high amount of physical punishment and still getting up to continue fighting. This is most likely attributed to his Air Magic use.

History:
For the M A G I C

Element: Air/Smoke

Caesar uses Air magic through self-controlled respiration. He can create an almost infinite amount of stamina through generating enough amounts of air inside of his body in order to maintain stamina.
Spells:

Bubble Cutter: Caesar condenses large amounts of air into a bubble with the ability to slice. This causes them to form shapes much like saucers with a small blade-like ring surrounding each piece of vapor. These bubbles move at a higher velocity and have a higher tractability, allowing Caesar to fire them at any direction with ease.

And the AWESOME M I S C E L L A N Y

A what?

We are not reserving spots for the Light, Darkness and Spirit elements, but you're welcome to apply for them. However, please know that the Spirit element has a significantly higher entry floor than any others due to the nature of it. (I will probably be really annoying about it, too.) Even Light and Darkness are easier to apply for.

Dont do it...Dont do it. Dont do i- Reserve me, I beg of you. This is too good to pass up. Please let me know if my character needs any work on the spells and such, and if they need any more limitations :D. Im finishing my history up right now.

Name: Ivo Steele

Age: 19

Gender: Male

Element: Darkness

Spells:

Seep

Seep, quite adequate to the name, is where Ivo seeps into the shadows, pertaining invisibility of sorts. He shifts the dimensions of his body to pertain the dimensions of the shadow he is seeping in to. Though this spell might seem powerful to some, if Ivo seeps into the shadows he cannot tread where light is. Only where there is the presence of a Shadow can Ivo Walk over it. Ivo can only Seep if he is concentrated, and is immersed in shadows. The spell has quite a few limitations, however after Ivo sucessfully seeps, he can walk in the shadow without using a large amount of his stamina, however if he stays in the shadows for too long he starts to get nauseous and can fall out of his seep form.

Overcoat

Overcoat, again true to its name (you might sense a pattern here), is where shadows start to envelop any designated area around Ivo's body, be it his fist, leg, foot, head. This spell does take up a sufficient amount of energy and will leave him tired after it's been used. If in a fight, Ivo would not like to use Overcoat more than 4 times. Overcoat can take a larger toll depending on the area it's covering. Obviously covering a finger and covering his entire torso will result in different after-effects. Ivo can use Overcoat to injure the wearer, by tightening the shadows. He can attach a Shadow onto someone else, however it required a very heavy amount of focus.

Expunge

Expunge, true to its name, is a rather violent Spell and Ivo try to use it as infrequently as possible. Expunge wraps the target in a shadow and inject spikes into said target. It is not very effective against ground casters. Expunge is fueled by any hatred which Ivo is feeling at the time. Ivo, being a more merry person, cannot put a very large punch into Expunge. Expunge's greatest downfall is that Ivo is left very tired muscle wise, and it is difficult for him to move. He will indefinitley vomit after using Expunge as it takes up a superior amount of energy. Expunge's limitation is that the user needs hatred and shadows to use the spell, and in an open area, casting Expunge is close to impossible, and if casted the damage will be null.

Bastion

Bastion acts as a shield, and the shield dimensions cannot be modified well. It's limited by its dimensions, and can be easily broken by any Light or Fire spell. Bastion is the counterpart of Expunge in that it works as fevorously as how much the user wants to protect something. Bastion is a strong shield, but according to how long it is used, it will take a toll on its user. Ivo tries to use Bastion to protect, and protect for a limited amount of time.

Appearance:

Spoiler:

Ivo is a lean 19 year old male with dark hair and blue eyes. His hair flows down to about shoulder length, and is quite puffy. He has a small jaw line, and a face with little to no facial hair. Ivo makes it a task to shave frequently, Ivo has a tuft of hair which comes down to his forehead. Ivo's hair is usually kept very messy, and does not comb it as often.

Ivo can be seen wearing a white t-shirt with black a black circle, encircling his collar. Lines stem out from the circle and encompass his sleeves. The tips of his cuffs on his shirt are black, with a hint of yellow. Ivo usually wears either slack shorts or baggy jeans. He does not appreciate tight clothing as it leaves someone immensely uncomfortable. Ivo usually wears the same attire, unless a special occasion is at hand. Ivo also has a chain necklace with a black, single wing. His fashion sense is very linear and monotone.

Ivo stays away from flashy clothing as much as possible, and hates wearing a monkey suit (a tuxedo). Ivo is 5'9" and weighs 134 pounds. He doesn't have the largest frame, and is not the most intimdating figure. He can be seen with bags under his eyes as he suffers from mild Insomnia.

Personality:

If you asked Ivo's parents to describe him, they would say Lazy, Arrogant, and Kind. If you asked Ivo to describe himself he would say Awesome, Awesome, and Awesome. If you asked any of Ivo's friends they would say he's Carefree, easygoing, and quite lively. His friends know him the best.

Ivo has no care in the world, be it academics, sports or girls. He doesn't care how other people see him, or his fashion sense. He dislikes people who try to change him, or who change themselves for the amusement or attention of others. Ivo tends not to speak his dislikes to people, and can keep his outrage inside of him.

Ivo is an expert at hiding emotions, and can always portray himself as some guy who particularly doesnt give a sh!t. Ivo can be quiet at times, and sometimes keeps to himself, however Ivo is a very merry and cheery person and really likes to interact with people. Ivo wont carry out a conversation if he feels awkward with the topic. Ivo is quite selfless at times, and puts other before himself.

Ivo isn't always straightforward with what he says, however people get the message and the idea. He can transmit ideas from people to people, and is sometimes a rebel. He doesn't appreciate the way modern education works with standardized testing, but he rolls with it anyway.

Ivo always took pride in his studies of magic, and Ivo loved to travel whenever presented the opportunity. Ivo never really liked to stay in one place due to his ADD, and classic academics was just not for him. Ivo loves his studies his magic as he actually gets to perform it rather than learn it and contain it.

Ivo's greatest pet peeve is someone who judges him for what he does, and is not afraid to voice his dislike on these kinds of people. Ivo will be social with anyone except someone who judges him. Ivo also despises the casual hypocrite.

History:

"You mistake me sir. I dont care.

Ivo Steele, the greatest couch-potato a parent can ask for. Ivo was adopted to a lovely couple, known as Emmanouil Steele, his father, and Aatami Steele, his other father. Ivo was adopted by his two fathers, and everyone made jokes about him for that. They all joshed around with him, calling him names and rude slurs.

Ivo grew up in an orphanage known as 'Frankies Orphanage for Lovely Kids', and the Lovely part was simply a pull factor for adults. Franky, the old lady owner of the orphanage, absolutely hated kids. She named it Lovely Kids so adults would take the kids off her and she wouldn't have to deal with them. Most of the kids were the very contrapositive of lovely. All the kids there were bullies and shmucks. Ivo was 9 when his future parents came to the orphanage, they were disgusted by what they saw. The only thing that didn't make them leave was a small kid who had a teddy-bear, with white hair.

Ivo was 11 when his parents took him camping. When they setup a camp fire, Ivo was entranced by the flame. Ivo loved fire, it was a beautiful thing which created and ended life. While staring into the flame, he didn't realize that he was making it dance, flicker, extinguish and re-light it again. His fathers realized he was a mage, or had the potential to become one.

Throughout his life, Ivos parents homeschooled him and didn't send him to a public school. They thought that home-tutoring was much safer and better for Ivo after their little experience when they sent Ivo to 4th grade. When Ivo first entered Saint Maggies Public School, people were being really nice to him. He felt warm and happy at first, but then he introduced himself to the class.

"Hi Everybody!" he said with a warm expression. "My name is Ivo, I'm 10 years old. I go to fourth grade, obviously." he said and he got a laugh from the class. Little did Ivo know it was a strictly catholic school. "I have two fathers, and they're both great. They're the ones who told me to come here." he said, his smile unwavering. This time, everyone seemed...scared? The teacher slapped Ivo across the face and told him to immediately leave the school.

Ivo, defeated, left the school and marched home drearily. He had no spring in his foot, instead his foot hit the floor with a heavy thud. He told his parents what happened and they felt sorry for him, and from that day on he was homeschooled. Not just academically, they hired a teacher who could teach all subjects, including the subject of arcane studies.

Ivo, when he was 13, his parents got his report-card style sheet from Ivo's Teacher. All except his arcane studies were D's and F's. His Arcane Studies stood at a high A, and Ivo was proud. Despite his ADD, he managed to do well in arcane studies. It was the only subject which piqued his intrests. When he was 14, and summer was over, his teacher asked him to make a circle of fire. This should've been a pushover for Ivo, but he learned he couldn't conjure up any more flames. Ivo was worried sick, and when his teacher consulted his parents, he was afraid they would take him back to the orphanage. He tried as hard as he could to conjure up a circle of fire, and then he simplified it and tried to make a circle. It was all futile.

Ivo hadn't been able to conjure a flame for 7 months. He gave up on the arcane studies, and he still harbored the fear that his parents might send him back to the wretched orphanage. Ivo, in this time, learned to become easy-going. He was calm, cool, and collected. He lied down in the grass multiple occasion and looked up at the sky. He hung out with his friends next door. They were hooligans together, and they did lots of crazy stuff. The craziest was when they met up at 11:00 PM, the sky blotched with dark clouds. Ivo went outside and knocked on his friends door, his friend opened it and he said "Hello?" to seemingly no-one in particular. Ivo was startled and said "Andrew, its me Ivo!" and Andrew just shrugged and went back inside.

Ivo was puzzled, why hadn't Andrew seen him? He was walking back home when he looked down at his arm and checked the time. The time wa-... Where was his arm. He couldn't see his arm. He panicked and started to run home. He knocked on the door and when his dad opened it, he ran inside the well lit home. His body suddenly materialized, and he felt sick. He hugged his dad, said a random "Thank you." and went to his bed. He slept for a good while.

A few months later, he recieved a letter from the Vale Institute of Higher Learning. His parents were proud that he was able to go to a school of magic, but they hadn't known they were being tricked by their son. He said he was going there to learn Fire, when that was entirely incorrect. They presumably wanted him for his arcane studies or his knowledge of Darkness casting. It was most likely the latter, and he was more than anxious to what he was going to see..

Other:

Ivo sometimes has hallucinations, and has a slightly psycho side to him which he tries not to let out.

@Nyx: Due to the limited availability of Light, Dark, and Spirit elements, there are no reservations for them. They're purely a first come, first served agenda (even then, they are harder to be accepted, especially Spirit).

@Tyler: The RP itself isn't that big, but neither is it small. Including the GMs, there are fourteen spots. Also, I'd consider it a semi-sandbox roleplay. There is definitely direction and plot involved, but there will be quite a lot of freedom as well.

Alright, Tyler, a quick check on your progress:

On the Spells

First, it's kind of completely unnecessary (and kind of annoying to look at) to state whether it's an offensive or defensive spell. The description of the spell's effects is more than sufficient. Also, please don't write them like you're "writing a book". Your sheet is about Auron—your character—but right now your Spells section looks like a generic template that anyone can freely take from. The sheet is all about Auron, and all spell descriptions within your sheet should only concern Auron.

Overheat: Emotion-based spells are frowned upon, as they aren't a genuine limitation of the character or spell. We shouldn't need to clarify that emotional instability would keep someone from effectively using magic. Also, there really isn't anything to control with the spell, so mentioning that he "cannot control it" is redundant. This would also need to heavily influence his History, especially if he has any semblance of normalcy before the letter from Vale.

Spit Fyre: I dislike your stylistic spelling of "Fire"; not a problem, just something I thought should be mentioned for some reason. In terms of damage calculation, damage is relative. "Medium damage" could mean nothing more than a couple scratches at best depending on who gets hit. You can also alter how much power you're putting into it. It's an extremely unreliable measurement, and should be omitted.

What kind of limitation is "you can't cast it if your mouth is dry"? Why doesn't it burn him? He is turning his saliva into a fireball and spitting it, and he doesn't even get chapped lips? Also, please don't respond to this post with your explanation. Make amends in your original sheet, then post that you've changed it. It'll make things much cleaner and more organized. :3

Fire Fist: Why didn't you make it "Fyre Fist"? Now it's inconsistent and I like the stylistic spelling even less. I won't reiterate the problem with classifying damage, either. The backfire also isn't anywhere near the level of the spell's apparent strength. He needs skin lotion. That's the worst it currently does to him for giving him a hefty punch.

Wall of Flame: In general, the spell itself is fine. However, how does it affect Auron? Since he can be burned by his Fire Fist (even though that barely does anything to him in its current state anyways), can his wall burn him if he gets too close? Does he feel the heat at all, even if it's to a lesser extent than other mages? Obviously, he's going to waste energy casting spells. It's a given, and unless there's exceptional energy expenditures going on, it doesn't need to be mentioned.

Don't worry about specifying how much damage a spell does, or what exactly it's supposed to be classified as. This isn't Algebra or Language Arts, and we're not teachers who are ready to berate you every time you don't include 100% exposition. If you've ever seen my character sheets, I personally encourage leaving a lot things up to implication. Instead, tell us what it does, how it works, and what problems Auron faces for using it.

On top of this all, he's described overall as a friendly person. Having primarily offensive spells seems counter to him as a character.

If you need help coming up with limitations or spells in general, don't hesitate to ask; Colony and I would be more than happy to help.

On the Appearance

It's Shintaro Kisaragi from Mekaku City Actors and the Kagerou Project. I knew it just from looking at his face, and I don't like it. Chuckles has the same problem, but he rips off the entire character. (Sorry for the jab, Chuckles, but we all know.) If you're looking for just a source picture to use as a reference in your sheet, you can literally add an "original" tag to any search, and please note that a full written description is still required. You don't even need to include a picture in the sheet itself.

Lastly, what kind of name is Auron? His last name's completely normal, but then "Auron". Did you just take it off Final Fantasy or something? I mean, you can go with it if his parents were eccentric or something (look at how many girls were unfortunately named Daenerys after Game of Thrones premiered), but it just seems kind of out of place when this RP takes place on modern Earth.

And here's the evaluation of NyxShooter's SU (please remember that judging for Darkness element is much stricter than the base elements and their evolutions):

The age limit is 17. I assume you weren't aware of or didn't notice the highlight information on the SU Template (just hover your mouse pointer over each category).

Seep: Honestly, this spell seems rather silly. It's just a flavor trap that screams "since it's dark, then it's gotta involve shadow walking." Birdy described it in four words that you didn't in an entire paragraph: "He sinks into shadows." Plus, I really don't see what use it would have in any daytime situation, which is exactly when classes would be.

Overcoat: I REALLY cannot explain how much I dislike this spell. Nothing about it is clear (e.g., what does it even do?) AND it manages to abuse an opponent AND it doesn't have any actual limitations (focus is never-ever a genuine, good restriction).

Expunge: This is another spell with poorly-designed limitations. Emotion-fueled spells aren't a genuine limitation, and physical exertion isn't proportionate to being able to engulf a target with a makeshift iron maiden. Also, it isn't explained very well how he actually uses the spell on someone. Most students at Vale are high mobility, and I guaranteed that none of them are going to sit around and let someone touch them or allow a spell to engulf their body and shove a ton of spikes into them.

Bastion: I defer to my previous comment on emotion-fueled spells. A shield's durability shouldn't be indefinite, and any durability should be physical instead of magical. The "weakness" against only two elements is... peculiar to say the least and really unnecessary.

Birdy: Frankly, the weakness solely to light and fire is stupid, since it's clearly there only thematically. Why can't metal pierce it? This isn't Pokémon.

However, this is above and beyond the best spell presented so far, as it doesn't need much fixing other than applying genuine limitations.

Personality: People judge people for many things and it's almost guaranteed that they will judge, but if Ivo seriously gets upset at people for judging his actions (the product of who he is as a person), then that makes him a really shallow individual. There's also the fact that he voices his opinion on the single most shallow aspect of his being, which doesn't coincide with the rest of his personality.

History: Where'd the white hair come from? Remember, Vale may be magical, but it is still very much based in the real world. There seems to be a massive misunderstanding about magic and Vale itself, too. We hoped it was sufficiently explained in the OP, but Vale does not explicitly tell someone they are going to learn magic in an invitation letter, and most of the world has no idea that magic even exists. This all immediately ruins everything involving his "arcane studies". The history is a mess, and wrought with misunderstandings that could have been cleared up just by reading the opening post.

From what I know, one can't exactly enroll in a Catholic school without being screened (so if they didn't like gay parents, they never would've let Ivo enroll in the first place), not to mention that if a teacher slapped a student, they'd lose their job or worse.

Birdy: It makes me think you're not ready for this RP, especially not in a crucial position like one of the exclusive elements.

Also, the bit about Ivo's sociopathic tendencies seem like a really big deal, and would undoubtedly have a lot of influence on his history and personality. However, it looks like you literally just threw it in because "Darkness means he's gotta be insane, and even though I'm never going to use this aspect of his personality ever I should offhandedly mention it anyways to make him look more appealing." (The last bit was Birdy's comment, not mine. A little harsh, but it seems to work for her.)
