I know people have tryed this before, and maby some may have done this but I do plan on making a online pokemon game. My game is gonna be free to play and have competive ladder system. you will start with a choose of 6 pokemon instead of 3 and you will only be able to have a max of 20 instead of unlimited. It will have a GBA style graphics and will start with only the frist 151 pokemon. I do not plan to have a world to explore or any quests other then gym leaders. right now my game is vary alpha but it dose work and i will be opening a selective alpha test in a few weeks.
I will have more screen shots soon.



Features:
-catch and train all pokemon
-player vs player battleing
-all normal pokemon items
-chatrooms "every area is like a channel"
-gym battles "and maby the ablitiy to open your own gym?"
other features will be listed as i comeup with them

^and thats what you should do keeping it simple will make your life alot easier, people keep forgetting its not the graphics that attracts people to pokemon its the gameplay. Can we request to alpha test I have alot of experience wit pokemon mmorpg's and am actually on the development team for one of the more popular ones now

i will post a offline play version of the game soon that will be my "Alpha" and after I fix all the probs with that i will go "beta" and realese that on the fourms.

The whole game is in vb6... Befor i get any nay sayers i just want to point out that VB6 is fast to build and i know how to do winsock up and down in vb6 along with databases that will store pokmons data and graphics.the game dose not need anymore power then what vb6 provides so im good and im aslo hoping to have only a small community of maby 200-400 players tops and i dont plan to make anymoney off of this i just want to use it in my porfolio.

i also will have a site up for it within the next week or so...

Are you using Gdi32(bitblt) or are u using Direct X 8 like me and seiphs mmorpg
also why arnt you using Socketwrentch
Winsock is A, Slower
b, Doesnt allow large packets sent
c, causes problems sometimes unless u create some kind of new packet handling system

Im above RMXP/any other game making prog. Its been years scence I last used that kind of stuff and once you stop useing youll find that you can do anything you want without limitations. All you need is a desire to learn and built with what you know.

PS:Ive got a ton of work done on the pokedex database i made to store the pokemons base stats and graphics. The only real problem im haveing at the time is animimateing the battle system but that should be solved soon. after I get a alpha of that battle system ill post it as a demo. its not gonna be networked but it should be a fun prog to play until I get around to networking things.

Im going to do a diffrent attack system for my pokemon game then what has been donr in the past... pokemon will not automaticaly learn attacks. im doing this because I Feel its stupid that all of a sudden my abra knows how to teleport without being tought. So I will have a store ware you buy books that tell you how to teach your pokemon how to use these moves AKA"TMs/HMs".
you will be able too use the book over and over on all of the pokemon that are able to learn the attack. other then being able to learn attacks each pokemon will start with two attacks so that there not useless.

In addition I will not use every attack from all of the games there will be a ton of attacks of each type dont get me wrong but i will not use all of them and some will have diffrent names or do diffrent things all togather.

Feel free to coment on this information...

Whoa sounds like stuff thats not trouble in:
a) c++
b) c
c) asm
d) pascal
Dunno why but VB is made from microsoft and they don't make great support for their own libraries.

well I must admit im way to lazy to make battle animations for may game and I dont enjoy the innerworkings of them so until i come across some im not gonna put them in the alpha. Im gonna leave the code open for them and add them later. I want to work on the bigger stuff for now like the interface and i also have to enter all the stats into the data base that stores the pokemon stats. With no team this is proveing too be more work then had planed but the show will press on. Im gonna skip battle animations now with the exeption of a basic battle animation that will just be there to make the game have some personality. If anyone has pokemon battle animations in anyform that i colud figure out a way too work with I whould love to have them. I also plan on haveing more battle styles then most games like:

-1V1 one pokemon vs one pokemon AKA"The normal battle system"
-2V2 two pokemon vs two pokemon AKA"The new battle system"
-3V3 three pokemon vs three pokemon AKA"My new battle system"
-max party modes ware you can only have a max of 1-6 or 1-3 and so on
-3V3 kill the leader "ware the max party size is 3 and if the leader dies you lose"
-and others...

This is a screen shot of in town for pokemon online battles as I said before iI dont plan on having a 2D sprite based world to explore. I order to catch pokemon you will have to travel to the routes and caves ect... fight them.

I like the idea about teaching pokemon new attacks, which attacks are you planning on leaving out, theres attacks that are pretty much useless at mid-to-higher levels because theres other attacks that do the same thing only better. If your battling lower level pokemon however it becomes necessary to have those low base attacks so everything wont be a OHKO
