The Grinding Challenge

You must maintain a team of six different Pokémon throughout this challenge. (At the start of the game, you may carry less than six Pokémon up until you've caught the first five different catchable Pokémon you encounter).
Before you can enter the next town on your journey, all of the Pokémon in your party must be at a certain level. This level increases by a certain value for every town that you visit. (See Specifics below for the specifications for each game.)
You can switch the Pokémon that make up your team whenever you like, but in order to progress further in the game you will need to level up any new Pokémon to the required level to enter the town. (Pokémon in the PC do not have to be levelled up.)
Optional. Pokémon in the PC do need to be levelled up. (This means the more Pokémon you catch the more grinding you'll have to do.)
Insane Mode. You must capture every unique Pokémon you come across and train them to the required level before entering each town.
Only Slightly Insane Mode. You must capture every unique Pokémon you are capable of catching. Your party must reach the required level before entering each town. All other Pokémon must meet the level requirement of three towns ago in Kanto, Johto and Unova or the level requirement of four towns ago in Hoenn and Sinnoh. (For example, if you wanted to enter Saffron City your PC Pokémon would all have to be level 35 instead of 61.)

Retro Gamer'93 (http://www.pokecommunity.com/member.php?u=288998) sent me some custom userbars for this challenge, so a big thanks to him. Userbars are not showing up right now, I'll keep you posted as to when the images display properly.

Yes, this challenge includes any travelling you may have to do before you can actually catch Pokémon (for example, in Silver version you would have to level up your starter to level 12 before entering Cherrygrove for the first time). Once you can catch Pokémon, you must go back to before the second town in order to train them all to the second town's entry level.
All challenges end after defeating the game's Elite Four (in Unova, the challenge ends after beating the Elite Four the first time around).
You may add your own rules to your challenge, just mention it in the thread. (I've added "easy mode" for those who wish to do the challenge without a full party of six.)
I haven't played Black or White yet, so please let me know if I got the order for the cities wrong (I'm going off what I read on the Bulbapedia page for Unova).

Awesome man! Technically you're meant to have a team of six but feel free to complete the challenge any way you want.

That's why it's called The Grinding Challenge hahaha. I've only done it once, and that was on a solo run through Platinum. Doing it with a team of six will prove difficult!

I usually gain lvl 60-65 before PKMN League... I am on in Emerald :)
Awesome man - watch out, the first part of Emerald is really hard - to make up a team of six level 15s before you enter Petalburg, one of your party members will have to be either Ralts or Seedot (as there are seven unique Pokémon before Petalburg). Ralts doesn't have an offensive attack when you first catch it and then when it learns Confusion it can't attack Poochyena (which is hell annoying), and Seedot only knows Bide, meaning you have to constantly run to the Pokémon Center and heal him between battles to level him up. I'm almost at Rustboro now though, it gets easier.

* * *

As for my progress, the start of the challenge was extremely difficult. Having to get everyone to level 15 by battling level 3 wild Pokémon was challenging - what was even worse is that Ralts didn't have an attack when I first caught it, and after training it to learn Confusion it still couldn't attack Poochyena, which made it that much more challenging. Once I get all my party members up to level 20 (and my PC Pokémon up to level 5 as detailed in Only Slightly Insane Mode) I'll head into Rustboro and take on the gym.

I'm actually really stoked to do this, and will be doing so on the hack, Pokemon Blaze Black. In case you don't know, this has all 649 pokemon available, and has a much higher level of difficulty compared to teh actual games, so I think it should work out pretty well.

Name: mamoswineftw
Game: Blaze Black
Not sure if I will take INSANE mode, will try it out and then see.

Team: Snivy level 7, Contrary, Nuvema Town

EDIT: It's only going to be slightly insane. I will catch every pokemon, but will remain in PC 3 town requirements behind.

October 21st, 2011, 2:28 AM
WHat to do if you get isled?
A Pokémon you were grinding don't have the level to come back/go to the town, and your other pokemon that have the level have fainted from switch-grinding,hence you're stuck on that route.I fainted(as in whited out) a few times and went to back to the PC as it is mandatory, whatcha say about it

If that's the case, you can backtrack to the last town and go back and forth between that town and the route you caught the Pokémon in until that Pokémon is up to the same level as the rest of the party. If you go back past that town, you cannot re-enter that town until all the Pokémon in your party are that town's requirement level. That sounds a little confusing so I'll give you an example:

You're in Mt. Moon in Kanto and run into a wild level 8 Zubat. All of your current party Pokémon are level 19 (which was the entry requirement for Pewter City). Now, you are not trapped in between Pewter and Cerulean - you can go back to Pewter City and then back to Mt. Moon if you need to. However, if you go back to Viridian Forest, you will need to train your Zubat up to level 19 in order to re-enter Pewter City. If that doesn't make sense just let me know.

October 23rd, 2011, 1:27 PM
I am in. I'm in on Fire red, and will not be doing the six pokemon.

And to make it epicer, I'm doing it in hand held Diamand. For when I'm not at home, AND when I'm in bed.

October 27th, 2011, 2:26 PM
It should be noted that all hacks made by Drayano (including BlazeBlack/VoltWhite) alter the leveling curve by changing wild Pokémon levels, which makes grinding easier but means the battles aren't basically auto-wins later in the game.

Hmm, I'll probably do Emerald after I finish my current playthrough, right now I'm in Lilycove so I really don't want to just restart the game, oh well. Maybe later though!

Edit: Nevermind I'll just do Firered, Wallace's Gyarados is pissing me off.

Retro Gamer'93 has made some custom user bars for the challenge (which you can see in the first post), so if you like the look of them you can put them in your signature!
Due to a number of people disregarding the "you must have six Pokémon" rule, I've put in an "easy mode" into the original post, so you can do this challenge without having to have six Pokémon for the whole game. Best of luck!

Fun, fun fun!

I wanna try, but I'm not sure I have enough time :S
Anywho I'll stay tuned with this thread

November 15th, 2011, 7:11 PM
I might try this in a modified slightly insane mode with egg moves and trading between games but all the pokemon will be breed or caught on the game that I do it on. Gonna try for 30 level 40's and a team of semi-Ev conscious training Level 75's in Heartgold. I'm first getting my team to level 40 then I'll fight Morty (4/8 Gymleaders), then I'll train a box of pokemon to level 30. By the time I beat Red, I will have 2 boxes of pokemon at level 60.

I'm thinking:
- Thunder Punch
- Fire Punch
- Meditate
- ?
Naughty(+ Atk, - Sp. Def)

- Earthquake
- Outrage
- ?
- ?
I finally figured out how to get outrage and earthquake on garchomp without using a tm.
dragonair + Gible = Outrage gible + Larvitar = Outrage Larvitar + gible = Earthquake Outrage Garchomp

Starting my game today, got the egg moves breed on Elekid. I'm gonna upgrade my progress every few hours.

2:15 - Level 16 Quilava

4:00 - Level 19 Quilava
- Level 14 Elekid
- Level 2 Pidgey

6:30 - Level 19 Quilava
- Level 19 Elekid
- Level 17 Pidgey
- Level 3 Spinark

25:02 - 22 Caught/75 Seen
- Level 40 Electabuzz
- Level 33 Quilava
- Level 12 Gible

Hi, i would like to take this challenge for the ruby game! It will be fun. :) i'll post my updates here and such. Thanks! Easy mode btw.

EDIT: Alright so i started the game, went through the beginning and such. I picked Treecko, defeated the poocheyna, and went through all that other stuff :P So after the beginning beginning, I grinded up Treecko to lvl 10, and went to odale town. I beat May easily, and went through all that other stuff, and went to the next part in the game. -The place where you go before you can get into the next town- I grinded Treecko up to lvl 12, and caught a poocheyena. I grinded both them up to lvl 15, beat the trainers, got into the next town, met my dad, helped wally catch his pokemon and moved on. I went through that forest, beat all of the trainers up to the next town. I am currently grinding my pokemon to lvl 20. I caught a Taillow.

Current team:
Grovyle: lvl 20
Mighteyena: lvl 18
Taillow: lvl 10

Cya till my next update

EDIT: As I was grinding I had been thinking Insane Mode. You must capture every unique Pokémon you come across and train them to the required level before entering each town. What if we buy repels and don't come across any new pokemon? :) it isn't against the rules. What do you think?

January 24th, 2012, 2:02 PM
-Started the game and chose Turtwig as my starter.
-Grinded to lvl 10 before entering Sandgem town, nicknamed Turtwig Twizzler
-Bought Pokeballs and headed back to route 1
-Caught Bidoof (Chubbs), Kricketot (Melody) and Starly (Tempest)
-Grinded the mentioned above to lvl 10, Melody evolved
-Headed to route 2, caught Shinx (Pride) and after a lot of grinding (8 hours 50 minutes) got my team to lvl 15 (Bidoofs are monsters to lvl up)
-Finally entered Jubilife City

Twizzler (Turtwig), Lvl 15, Adamant Nature
Tempest (Staravia), Lvl 15, Relaxed Nature
Chubbs (Bibarel), Lvl 15, Quirky Nature
Melody (Kricketune), Lvl 15, Careful Nature

Damn. This challenge is really hard and takes a huge amount of time. Mankey was a ***** to grind. Pidgeotto, Wartortle, Spearow and Rattata were all okay but Mankey and Caterpie took FOREVER. I just Karate Chopped both of Brock's Pokemon for the win. On to Cerulean!

Also, while grinding, I ran into a shiny Weedle. I have a feeling that since I will be battling so many wild Pokemon, I might see a few more shinies.

I'm all up for this. I've been getting bored not doing anything. I'll do insane mode on Ruby. Hopefully, I'll update every town or so!

EDIT: Huh, no one replied to this thread so far. Anyway I started Saturday and chose Mudkip as a starter blah blah blah boring parts, then I grinded like crazy. It took forever to grind, I'm telling you. And I'm on insane... I've been catching everything and all so I got to Slateport with about 35 hours clocked in. I caught all the residential Pokemon so now I'm grinding them to 35, since everything else is. Almost halfway there!

I don't mean to sound like an ass, but this seems a lot more tedious than it is fun or challenging. In my normal runs when I grind, I absolutely despise it and just want to move on. If your Pokes are overleveled the game will be too easy, if you spend hours killing the same pokemon, this becomes extremely tedious and boring.

Maybe there's something I'm not understanding here. The challenge is ridiculous not because of the difficulty, but because of how tedious it is to do it, from what I understand?

August 17th, 2012, 5:49 AM
Ummm, yeah, it IS tedious, but it kills time.

Some may not agree with this, but due to the fact that it actually increases the challenge I don't see a problem with it. But I used a hack to get master balls so that I can catch the base pokemon of every evolutionary chain without fault. I had actually already started this challenge on my own before I ever found this so I'm currently in Vermillion at level 25, working on getting my Squirtle and those caught on route 5 to that level. I will be reaching the appropriate level for this challenge before moving on to the next area.
So basically I have caught every wild pokemon possible up to Vermillion including fishing for Magikarp. Most are at level 25 and the rest will be soon and before going on to Lavender town I will have every pokemon caught so far plus those on the way to Lavender and even a Digglett from Digglett's cave to level 40. I would restart the game in order to do the challenge properly but I've already put in about 25 fast forwarded hours and I'm not redoing all that.
And just fyi I am playing this on phone and the ONLY hack I used was one to make master balls $0 in the mart in order to have more pokemon to complete this challenge with.
