View Full Version : What Got You Into Pokemon?

Eh, I like reflecting. *shrug* Plus, since there are so many polls, I just decided to make one. Dun worry, I won't make you choose your favorite pokemon. ^-^

However, I will make you choose what got you interested in the entire Pokemon thing. Was it one of the games? The anime/movies? The cards? The toys? Come on now, I know it's the last one. *wink* What aspect caught your eye and made you want more?

For me, it was the anime. I couldn't resist the combination of cute pokemon and the fun-loving Team Rocket trio. That did me in. ^^;

So, don't be shy, what was yours?

Red was my first contact with Pokemon. It got me hooked and I soon started watching the anime.

(Shesh, my internet is moving at a 24 kb pace >.>)

Well at the very beginning, I got Pokemon Red Version, I wasn't really into it, for some reason, when I was at that time, Pewter Cave seemed forever so I gave up.

Several years later, I got Pokemon Crystal, and I just LOOOOOVED it, it just had that feeling with it! During that time, my brother was VERY into the Anime, brought Tapes and stuff. I didn't say I liked it, but I sorta secretly liked it. Now my brother DENIES that he ever jumped on the couch singing the pokemon theme song and saying phrases like "Pikachu go!!!"

I used to show off that I knew more pokemon than he did, since I played Crystal xD He only knew the Kanto region.

I used to stay up all night playing Crystal, fun game...

Pokemon Green was my first game. Got it at a used game store in my town for $19.00. I loved it, even though I couldn't read japaneese at the time. Heck, I still can't. XD

My first starter was Charmander, simply because I liked what it looked like. When it became a Charizard, though, well... O_O;

Anyway, yeah, I got hooked from the actual first games.

Meh, I'm just going to be terribly generic here and say that it was the first generation pokmon games, because...well, it's true. ^-^ My first ever experience in pokmon was when I got to play a bit on my friend's copy of Blue (I had a Bulbasaur and a Beedrill by the time I had to stop, as I recall) and the game just appealed to me straight away, so (With some help from Shorties-kun) I managed to persuade my mum into letting me buy my own, although I picked Red simply because it looked nicer. XD Anyways, I got aquianted with the Anime a short time later, and the TCG too...and then it kind of snowballed from there. So yeah. ^-^

I think I originally heard of pokmon when I was about 8, when my friends were talking about it. Started collecting the cards, but I didn't really like to play the card game that much.... Just collecting the best cards. ^^

Then I got pokmon blue and yellow, and it sorta went from there. I love the games.... and the pokmon are so neat. ^v^
I still want more of the games though. @_@ and if the new pokmon game is for DS, I definately have to get a DS....
I have yellow, blue, gold, and ruby. I would like the others, but I tend to wait until they aren't new and they're hard to find =/

For a few years I sort of forgot about pokmon... But several months ago I got back into it. ^^
And even though my friends liked them first, now I like them and they don't care. o___O They went out of the phaze but didn't go back in..
I will always like pokmon, even if I sometimes forget about them for a while.

Now I play the games, but I no longer collect the cards. I liked collecting the first set, anyway, and it would be a PAIN to try to do that now. O__O so many new pokmon ...... ..

January 18th, 2006, 11:43 AM
I would say...all at once but the first acts were my new friends playing with Red/Blue. While that was going on, the anime was playing on and just swept up with me. The final act was the cards. And the rest for more is history.

Then a year later, I played while my friends didn't. So yeah.

I would have had fun with the toys if there were a better selection, Gym Leader toys goshsarn it!

Pokemon Red me and my dad got for my brother when he turned 9 in 1998. All three of us seemed to play equally, so my dad bought teh Blue version just for me the following Christmas (I was 11 at the time).

Umm, the anim got me. I was really young... like, 7 when the anim came out, here in Mexico.

I knew that every kid in Mexico would watch that epi, so, I watched it too. And then got into the games...and finally, a bunch of Poke forums. @_@

The Pokemon cards. I remember coming to school one day and everyone had these cool cards. So after school I ran home and started begging my parents for these cards. They eventually bought me the starter and so I got into Pokemon. This was all back in 99.

The anime and the pokemon themselves, as you can noticeXD, it has changed my life...for good *faints*

Before I liked Pokmon, I actually was one of the kids who made fun of the people who did. Which I regret, because that's like...most of my friends now. But anyway...I remember back in 3rd grade that my friend Josh brought in this video to class of the episode wayyy in the beginning of the anime...like Cerulean City or whatever? That episode with the vacuum thing or whatever. We could never watch it again, because someone got offended. As if that's suprising. But anyway...I watched that, and I instantly loved it. I got one of every of the generations of games up until Ruby/Sapphire. I stopped after that...but I still play Sapphire occasionally.

The TCG, actually. It was when it had first come out in the US, and all the cards were in Japanese. I was about four or five, and it was at a summer camp. (Yeah, I remember it REALLY well.) All the other kids had these cards, and though they didn't understand them, they collected and traded them anyway. XD
I remember my first pack. In it, I think I got a holographic Moltres. I brought it to camp, and this one kid noticed it.

"Hey, that card is really rare!" He told me.
"It is?" I said in surprise.
"Yeah! How 'bout you give it to me, and I'll give you something really great in return."

Hey, I was five.

Needless to say, I never saw it again, or the card he said he'd give me. XD
When almost everybody lost interest in Pokemon, I stayed dedicated. And I still am!

My stepbrother got Red version, and I watched him play it. It got me interested in it. Then, I eventually got my own GBC and played Blue/Yellow. It got me hooked to Pokemon, and I've pretty much been hooked since. 8D

I saw the first pokemon show aired in the U.S. by accident and was hooked from then on........its funny cause while I watching the first show instead of playing my N64 I knew it was addictive and I knew I was going to be involved for a while

I never liked the anime, or the cards. I was at school one day and my one friend had a Red version. I was bored and interested, so I played it. Then before I knew it I was addicted. I couldn't stop playing. Although I knew nothing about Pokemon, I had to buy one of those games. So I went to the store, and even though I played Red, I couldn't find it there, but I did see Gold and Silver. So picked up Silver and loved it. And then I found interest in Pokemon. :)

January 18th, 2006, 6:28 PM
If I recall correctly, my interest towards it started due to an article that ran in Nintendo Power some time before Pokemon actually came out in the US. The concept behind the games seemed interesting, and the pokemon they showed looked neat as well (though I tend to like video game monsters anyways).

What truly got me into liking it for certain, though, was the anime. I started watching it at the time it first aired on TV around here, and that got me into wanting the games (which I did get - my first version was Blue version). Ever since then, my interest in it hasn't ever fully gone away...

January 18th, 2006, 11:26 PM
I chose the Anime choice as I first was exposed to Pokmon in that way and after watching some episodes I got Pokmon Yellow and got hooked so I then purchased the next game that came out and so on.

January 18th, 2006, 11:42 PM
I got into PKMN I actually think the TCG first. My first card was Charizard out of a random booster pack ( I was happy that day XD ) Right after I got my first pack I got the Red. I've gotten every single game since.

January 19th, 2006, 3:18 AM
Back in 1996, when I still used to buy Corocoro every month (I was like 5? 6?), I saw this tiny article on a new game being made by a company I never heard of -"GameFreak".
The game was called "Pocket Monsters".

After seeing the initial screenshot, I was excited. And I swore I would get this game.

And this is how I got into Pokemon.

January 19th, 2006, 3:49 AM
it was when my cousin brought over his pokemon red from the us... at the time pokemon didnt show on terrestrail tv.....

January 19th, 2006, 2:34 PM
What got me in to pokemon was the old read/blue games as people at my school got them, and i think "father christmas" bought me red and i carried on liking it sice then....

Well for me it was both the anime and the cards, but the cards came fast. 6 years ago when i was in yr6 of primary school (dang those were the days) they had just come out, and EVERYONE had em, and i mean everyone, these were the days where the most popular kid in schl would be the guy with charizard, and then the guy with venusaur or blastoise lol.
anyway i watched the anime straight after and was hooked, and then got both games for my birthday, and it went on from there really. although i did go off it for a long time, all my mates did and so did everyone else, and i just was driven away frm it by other things, but about a yr ago i watched the anime just to see how it had changed, and i was shocked. anyway one thing led to another, i got the newest game, continued watching the anime, and here i was hooked again lol. and then about 6 months ago i had to take a lot of time off it due to personal stuff, issues, career school, various things, but now about a month ago i started up again. so yep it's been an up and down hill thing for me, but its always remained special to me.

Well, what got me into Pokmon was...my little sister's friends. O.o;

I was in 2nd grade and she was in Kindgergarden. One day, two of her friends came over. (Well actually, it was her friend and her friend's little brother. XD; ) Before then, my little sister and I hates Pokmon and thought it was "only for boys."
They said "Pokmon's on!" so my mom turned it to the station that played it. It was near the end of the episode "Lights, Camera, Quake-tion!" I don't get why I still remember that... .-.; I watched it and fell in love with it~ Then just two years ago (at least, I think. .-. But that's going by school year...), the magical internet introduced me to the Japanese version. XD; Anyway, so basically the anime got me into it. XD; Then I started to play the games and collect the trading cards...*sigh* I never got to bring in the trading cards though, since they banned them from school. .-. They also banned all other trading cards...I actually got into Pokmon near the end of it's popularity in my area (please note I said my area. .-.; ). ^^; And I'll shut up now...

The first time I remember hearing about Pokemon was in an issue of Nintendo Power. They were doing all these promotions about the games and the anime series, so one day, I just turned on the channel that NP said carried the show in my area to see what the big deal was. I'm pretty sure my first episode was the S.S Anne episode, and from there on, I watched it each day. I honestly can't remember what about the show appealed to me, but maybe it had something to do with the fact that my friends at school were fans of it and I didn't want to be left out.

Shortly after, I bought Pokemon Blue, and that's when I really got into it! For a long while, that was like the only video game I played. And I was real good at it, too!

Good times, good times...

When I saw this pic in the Adventurers magizine. It had Snorlax, Geodude, Flareon, Eevee, and others. It showed a big net about to snatch them up. I was like "I must catch them all" o.O.

Aw man, how DID I get into Pokemon? Let me think...

The first time I ever remember being involved with anything pokemon was when I was around six or seven. I got a little Ivysaur squirt toy thing at KFC. Ivysaur was actually the first pokemon I ever knew about, which is weird because for 99.9% of people it was Pikachu. Pikachu was actually my second, and I remember that I learned about him by reading the back of a lunchable box. He became my favorite for a while.

I remember being at my cousin's house on her birthday. This was back when the only games out were red and blue. My cousin got Red version for her birthday, and she spent the rest of the evening glued to her game boy. This made me wonder what exactly the game was about, and if it was really as good as everyone said it was. About a month later, I found out. We were getting ready to go on a 13-hour drive to Boston for my Cousin's wedding. My parents said I could get one game to keep me occupied on the trip. I think it's pretty obvious what the first game I looked at was (lol). I decided to get Pokemon Red, simply because it had Pikachu on the back of the box. Because of that, I had assumed that Red had Pikachu in it and Blue didn't. The first day I got it, I played it on the game boy with my AC adapter so much that the batteries got too hot and my gameboy didn't work for a while. I was instantly hooked.

Ah... thinking back on this has reminded me of what a n00b I was at first XD. I remember that, for some reason, I thought Onix could fly and Ivysaur could shoot fireballs. I also remember giving my pokemon ridiculous nicknames such as "powerbug" for weedle and "birdmaster" for pidgey. I was so weird back then o_O.

January 28th, 2006, 8:14 PM
I first learned about Pokemon when I saw a tv commercial about it when I was five years old (i think it was about the anime, i'm not sure though [can't remember]). When I got a GB Color (it was teal), I got pokemon yellow to go with it, and I just fell in love with it. I've been a pokemon fan for 8 long years now!!!

When we moved back in 1999 I was really nervous with all the changes so I would always do what the crowd was doing (but I learned better the next time we moved) and that got me into it, eeven after it died and all the shallow fans abandone it it sorted them out from the REAL ones ^_^
