View Full Version : 10 Whole Years.

As bizarre as it sounds, 10 years ago today, the Pocket Monsters anime debuted on TV Tokyo in April 1st, 1997. I'm not going to bore you with my memories -- yet. Instead, I want to focus on what I did with the Kids WB finale: memories of the past. In that of: what episodes got to you at a certain period of your life?

What episodes frustrated you to no end and made you give up the series? What episodes made you race to the TV? All have a why attached of course. And with D/P taking off, fans seems to be happy in the direction the series is taking. Are you one of them? If so and if not, then why?

I don't want to do pure favorites, I'll make that clear. I just want to focus on the memories behind the favorites in my time capsule way. I prefer no dub issues, but just straightforward series. However, if you want to talk dub, handle it with the rest of the criteria here.

A decade. Who would have believed this series has lasted so long? Not me. Heh.

April 1st, 2007, 2:17 PM
Well i would of not believed that the series would not of lasted this long, i am guessing it might last another 5 to 10 years because the series is still ongoing as so the movies too...i don't see an end in sight of the series and the movies...if it ever went i bet every pokémon fan in the world would want it to continue and hold huge protests..

I think it will last as long as the simpsons has, if so i would be happy ^^

If it outlasts the Simpsons, then I'll be shocked. But it is hard to believe that it's been 10 years since the saga started over in the land of the rising sun. You gotta give the japanese credit, when they find a good thing they stick with it. Just wish that they'd bring back some the emotion from the Kanto series. That'd make things so much better.

Let see. I kinda forgot what my age was when I first saw pokemon but I do know which episode got me hooked. It was Ash's first battle against Blaine. I loved that how Blaine was able to use his fire pokemon so well and his riddles made me laugh. Then how the battle ended I just had to watch the next episode just to see what happens. I have to admitt it was because of that episode I fell in love with fire pokemon and ninetails!!!

Ten years. That is a long time. I have to say I miss a lot while I stop watching during the Johto times. I am still trying to catch up on those episodes. Still one of the best battles I can think of is when Ash defeat the Orange League Champion. That was a coolie battle. Then my fave has to be one of the most touching episodes next to Pikachu's Goodbye which happens to be my fave. Is That a Ralts I Here? I just love that episodes and I know it would be with me for at least ten more years. Kinda coolie that an episodes like Pikachu's Goodbye is one of the most remembered shows and it was shown ten years ago. It is nice to have some good episodes like that and then recently Sweet Baby James. I wonder what episode in the next three years will be the next touching episode.

God I feel old. I played Kanto pokemon when I was in high school and have just recently returned to find a 4th generation. How's that for an awakening?

April 7th, 2007, 9:07 AM
I don't know, you can't predict which episodes will get the serious or emoting treatment. AG at the beginning, you would have somewhat because it was the first reboot of the series. Thus, you would expect changes in formula ("A Poached Ego"). Heh. Sighs.

But, with D/P working out so well, I'm sure a serious episode will be coming up soon, if not already.

Wow Time sure has went by hasn't it? 10 years ago I was 9 years old! ^-^ Just a little kid now I am in college lol. But I still watch Pokemon everyday. 10 years ago I remember hearing about some cool show in school that was airing on Kids WB. It was at a 3:00pm in September 1997. When I saw the first epsidoe I was hooked! I mean everyday from then I watched all the Pokemon espidoes. My favorite would have to have been Ash's battle with Lt. Surge it was my favorite show it showed alot Ash's determaination to win and it was funny too. I have more but I don't want to bore you all ^-^

10 years allready. It's fantastic that it was able to last that long, many series have come and gone before they even started. And to think that even at my place Pokemon is still going on, that's just great. [We don't get many anime xO, so it's kind of a miracle that Pokémon is still on the telly]

I remember when my best friend told me there was a new show and started to say Team Rockets poem.

Ah, well. I haven't seen many of the later Kanto episodes, I don't have a TV with connection, so no Pokemon for me at home. I do have a lot of DVD's/Videos at home. I asked my Grandfather to tape them all. My favourite series were the Johto ones. I have a special bond with that region. Don't know why, probably because Silver was my very first game (which I got 5 years ago).

Aw, I was really young when Pokemon began x3 To me, it didn't seem as though it would last, with Digimon, and others to compete with. At least it lasted <3 Aaand will still be here for many more years to come, at least, I hope so~
Johto was the specialist to me though :3 They should go back to Johto again, yaay, and then all the kawaii Pokemon can debut again =]

I find that amusing as Kids WB didn't get the rights until early 1999. That's some time warp, unless you lived in Japan when that aired. Hehe. Sorry, couldn't resist.

I started watching Pokemon when I was about 7 (more than half my life now) and I still love it. I'm just hooked on it because I have no idea, but in the johto series, it started getting boring but I never stop watching it at all. As soon as the 3rd generation started it was good again. I can't wait for the D/P series

And come next week, the 500th episode of Pokemon will air. Title from Serebii.net.

Vespiquen & the Amber Castle.

500 episodes, wow. Just wow.

April 30th, 2007, 8:12 PM
The first time I heard of Pokemon was when I was about 9 or 10. At the time I was in Public School and then one day I start hearing about this show about pocket monsters and all and the kid who started it all: Ash Ketchum. And one Saturday morning on 1999 I wacthed my first Pokemon episode: "The Problem with Paris". I thought at first it was decent but it didn't interest me. Then sometime later I wacthed Ash battle with Lt. Surge and then spellbound in awe by Ash's determination and his VERY CLOSE friendship with Pikachu and vise versa, I was forever a fan since then. 10 years I'm now in college but reguardless I've been a faithful follower of Ash and his adventures for that long. Wow. 10 years. :surprised:

Word. I guess I kinda want the series to be a little more realistic, if not more mature.

I agree with you. There should be a little more emotion and realism in it. Like it could talk about Ash and friends views on war, issues like that.

Wow ten years! That is totally awesome! I was eighteen when it debuted on Kids' WB in 1999. Quite frankly at first I thought it would end like in 2003 or 2005. =x But then when the game continue the anime continued as well. I was happy when it continued. I am more into the anime than the games so...I am very glad I am watching a great anime. Even though the fad slowed down a little here, it is still continuing.

I hope to see more in the near future. Congrats Pokemon! ^^ *hopefully to see the anime get a little mature-have the characters grow up*

May 13th, 2007, 4:52 AM
i cannot believe it that pokemon lasted for ten years!!!!
so that's why many people has said to me that i'm too old for pokemons because nearly all people knows it!!

May 13th, 2007, 9:54 AM
I hope I never become too old for pokemon. I was ten when it came out and became an uberfan. Since then, my interest in pokemon slowly waned until I never watched the anime and I forgot all about the games. However, with the release of DP, I am back to my uberfan status! Pokemans ftw!

May 15th, 2007, 5:42 PM
Okay, I have watched Pokemon almost 8 years ago way back in June 1999. I was only 9 years old. It did changed my life forever. But I had no idea it aired in Japan 10 years ago and no idea it aired in America 9 years ago.

May 16th, 2007, 9:57 AM
I Was SEVEN Years Old Ten Years Ago!!! Lol

May 16th, 2007, 7:46 PM
I Was Three Years Old Ten Years Ago!!! Lol

Which has nothing to do with anything, here. So, let's keep it on topic and contribute.

For a change of topic, we could talk about the movies and their impact on their world, thanks to this TV show. Heh.

10 years, 10 movies. Amazing.

May 16th, 2007, 7:57 PM
I was 8 when I first saw pokemon...It was cool!
Ah...10 years of awesome shows and even cooler games...I have alwys wished that pokemon existed...Even to this day.
Here's to another 10 years of Pokemon Magic! *chugs coffee*

Indeed they were amazing...I honestly think that Pokemon has taught us all that despite our differences we all have the same general goals...To be the best at whatever inspires us!!

May 17th, 2007, 6:10 AM
There were 10 movies? I stopped watching after the third one.

May 17th, 2007, 6:38 AM
don't remember how old exactly i was now, but the first episode, "Pokémon, I Choose You!" was the episode that caught my attention. i'd have to say that it was quite hilarious that Pikachu wouldn't pay attention to Ash whatsoever. But I don't know if i'd have watched the show if it wasn't for the game. Pokémon Red was the first RPG i had ever played, and it was great. eventually, when Ash got to the Indigo Plateau, i couldn't help myself and ended up making a team just like his (Squirtle, Charizard, Bulbasaur, Butterfree, Pidgeot, & Pikachu). that team actually worked out pretty good, but eventually i had to evolve Pikachu because its only so strong. lol i'd have to say that i saw a few episodes of the Johto league, but thats about when i stopped until Battle Frontier. now i can't wait for Diamond & Pearl. should be very good (especially since James has another grass type that tries eating him much like Victreebell used to do, lol).

I know that the game came out before the anime, but is that just in Japan or does it also apply to the US? I don't remember which one I experienced first, but it seems they went hand in hand.

May 17th, 2007, 8:07 AM
I didn't really ever race to the TV to see the Anime. However, when it first aired on FOX (yes, FOX), it really took me by surprise. I mean, I had absolutely NO idea that they were even making an Anime of the games, since it wasn't really advertised much on TV until it first aired on WB.

I was in my mid teens when it came on but I didn't really watch it until I was turned on to it by neighbor. Yes, at one time, I was a conscientious objector of Pokemon.

As for favorites? "For Ho-oh the Bell Tolls", "Gettin' the Bugs Out" and "Holy Matrimony" were my favorites. Probably still are.

June 1st, 2007, 10:04 PM
I watched the series until mid-Hoenn saga. I don't really care for D/P or the future of Pokemon, however I do treasure the past. I don't quite remember the first episode I seen, I think I saw it from the first episode all the way up. My favorite season had to be Master Quest though, I remember coming home from school to watch it. Or I do remember on Sunday when Pokemon Kanto used to come on, because that was the first time I saw the battle between Ash and Blaine that was memorable. And then I never saw the conclusion to the match until much later in my life. >.>

Nevertheless, there's been some ups and downs with pokemon, it's been a fun ride, but I'm done with the anime.

Heh.. I started watching fromt he start at 5/6/7 years old. I realy grew up on pokemon. reading this htread reminded, me, anyone ele remember the first pre 1st episode ad? they had the old 150 charging on a field? i clearly remember a rabidash running. =D

Yeah, I realy enjoyed Electric Soldier Porygon (I was in japan at the time, parents taped it! yay!), by the way, i converted it to a dvd and and an .avi if anyone wants to see it, as i doubt you'll get another chance =/

I just loved all the early episodes. nuff said.

June 24th, 2007, 6:00 PM
I started watching this around 1998 in dub if I recalled correctly, all the way until somewhere in Johto, when I stopped because it was very difficult to find an episode here. My parents used to buy them for me when they traveled (it wasnt available locally at the time), but around the time Johto came out they didn't travel as much anymore.

When I finally got my broadband, I was so far behind in the series, I was discouraged from watching it again. But then my best friend influenced me into getting a DS and playing Pearl, and I got hooked again and when I found out the latest season was Diamond and Pearl, I started watching again. So I actually have a lot of gaps in between :D

The only thing I kept up with was some info from reading forums and wikis, as well as the movies. I can't believe its been 10 years as well :D

i bought the first game of pokemon when i was 4 that sounds crazy but i loved pokemon. then i was 8 when the johto games came out i didnt really understand the first pokemon that well and the johto became my favorite. and now im 15 and i love pokemon to this very day.

I was about 6/7 when I started watching. I think the first episode I watched was the 1st, but I was hooked and *had* to watch it from Battle Aboard the SS Anne. I remember really wanting to know if they survived and what happened hehe. I bought Red and then Silver and watched much longer than my friends.

But I stopped liking Pokemon around Johto League Champions. I rememeber being annoyed at nothing happening so I got bored of it completly and eventually didn't bother watching or playing the games anymore. It didn't help that they were repeating Johto Jouneys and JLC all the time. This must've been around 2002/2003.

A looong time after, around Febuary 2006 my brother had found that Smosh video on YouTube of the 2 boys singing the Pokemon theme. Around April I started talking to someone on a Harry Potter forum about that video and they said that they still liked Pokemon and wished they could still watch it because its only on Sky. So after seeing there were a lot of Harry Potter music videos on YouTube, I had the crazy idea that someone might upload Pokemon stuff and hopefully I could find the first episode, just to remember the "good old days". However, I found a lot of Advanced Battle episodes and thought this might be a new series but I didn't want to watch them.

After a lot of hunting I managed to find the first episode and it was lucky I did, otherwise I would never liked Pokemon again. After that I watched the Advanced Battle episodes I think one of the first new episodes I watched was either When where when why Wynaut? or A Cacturn for the Worse because I remember having no idea who May. Max, Drew and Harley were.

After watching tons of episodes and finding out that Pokemon wasn't dead, I decided to find a Pokemon forum and this was the first I found! I later found out about the 3rd gen games and bought LeafGreen and Emerald. Now I love Pokemon again!

So that is my very long and boring story of how I got back into Pokemon.

I missed this the last time I went through this thread. Do you have that episode uploaded somewhere? :D

It seems that most of us here starting watching from the Indigo League. I think "amazing" would be an understatement for our case lol
