30 Days of Gaming: Day 4: Favorite Character

Posted March 9th, 2011 at 8:13 PM by Shanghai Alice

First of all, yesterday was Mardi Gras, so the good times were rolling too hard for a blog post.

Also, I'm tired. So this'll be a quick one.

Anyways, on to Day Four of Shanghai's Thirty Days of Gaming. And Day Four is... *Drumroll*

Favorite Character! Yeah. Totally not given away by the title.

Aaaaanyways, this post is gonna be a tough one, because I actually have to consider who my favorite character is. And you, the reader, will never know how much mental stress that puts me under.

Okay, after quite a long period of reflection (Read: Lazing about), I've come to a conclusion.

My favorite character would be Fallen Angel Flonne from Disgaea.

That would be her. After her fall, of course.

Anyways, so, yeah. I mean, I know it may seem like I like simply because she's incredibly cute, perky, and utterly hilarious, but... There's more to that.

Barring Laharl, Flonne is the character in Disgaea that gets the most development. She starts out as a ditzy idiot, and then, through the course of the game, becomes someone more accepting of others, and a whole lot wiser.

And then the "Disgaea should be funny, Hurr Durr" thing kicked in for future games. -_- There's a reason why Hour of Darkness has the best plot out of the three.

Anyways, so, yes. Flonne.

Flonne particularly appeals to me because she's a very, very well-rounded character. While she may not be the epitome of character development, she definitely has many different sides to her. Specifically, the conflict between an angel's bigotry and her own failings, which, according to angelic bigotry, shouldn't even exist. She wrestles with the fact that even her almighty, supposedly infallible superiors can screw up or sin, and it clearly takes a toll on her.

Of course, she also deals with the flipside: Overcoming the belief that all demons are evil. The parallels between Laharl and Flonne's character developments were incredibly well done, as both steadily opened up to each other throughout the course of the game, learning from each other as they went along. For this reason, Disgaea was probably one of the most emotional games I've played, once you get past all the lies and comic exterior. The plot is actually... really touching.

Also, I just plain love Flonne. Even her later appearances in the series are absolutely lovable. She becomes a dorky anime fan, willing to go to any lengths to obtain her precious box sets and DVDs. Her passion for all things interesting, combined with her Godzilla fetish, make her something that is memorable, to say the least.

Also, the outfit is cute.

There, I said it. Flonne is cute, both as an angel, and a fallen angel.
