5-fer-1: Shanghai's a Lazy, Cheap Jerk! (Days 5-9)
Posted March 14th, 2011 at 4:54 PM by Shanghai Alice
You heard the man. I'm a lazy, cheap jerk. But seriously, what with family, stuff, school, band and all that jumpin' up mah arse, I don't what know where the last few days went.
To drop the horribly forced accent... I'm lazy.
Anyway, so, yeah. I don't feel like writing five full-length posts in a row, considering that I have three RP posts to reply to. So, because only one person (including myself) reads this, I'll just do one of these newfangled nickle specials.
For free. Ain't I the best?
Day 5: Game Character You Feel Closest To
----------------------------
Urk. Alright, the game character I feel closest to, while avoiding any wish-fulfillment or Mary Sue lines...
*Thinks deeply*
Though I hate to admit it...
Flonne, who is, incidentally, my favorite character. Minus the angel-demon side, the flirty side, and the complete naive- Wait, no, leave that one in.
Simply put, Flonne is closest to me in terms of how she views the world. She's not stupid enough to think that everything will always be nice and sunny, but she's not so cynical enough to believe that nothing will. She takes a realistic outlook, and adds diabetes-inducing amounts of optimism into it, a ton of energy, and a happy-go-lucky personality that makes her so darned endearing.
And, without going too deeply into my past... Well, I'm the kind of person that bends under stress, and comes up smiling. I'm extremely expressive, believe in crying or flipping out to clear my head, and tend to smile a ton. Even in the least appropriate situations.
And, just to be clear, I'm not stating that I'm an angel. Another thing that I have in common with Flonne is, well... We both screw up in spite of our beliefs. Badly. And then try to excuse them away, by rationalization.
So, yes. I think I have quite a bit in common with this little tank of indomitable optimism. Minus the bad end of Disgaea 1, of course. And the wings, and angelic-ness.
Day 6: Most Annoying Character
----------------------------
Moira Brown.
Moira BrownMoiraBrownMoiraBrownMoira-
Okay, you get the idea.

Okay, now you get the idea.
See, I don't hate Moira Brown, to be honest. She's very useful, starts off as your first real merchant and quest giver, and can help a character through the game fairly quickly.
And yet.
Her personality is annoying. Really, really, really annoying. She speaks with some demented Boston accent, and...
Argh. I'm not going into this. I just don't like her.
Day 7: Favorite Game Couple
----------------------------
Reimu and Marisa. Full stop.
Read Touhou Ibunshu, and you will know why.
No further explanation given, or asked.
Day 8: Best Soundtrack
----------------------------
Once again, a Touhou game'll take the cake here. Maybe Thirty Days of Touhou would've been more accurate...? But that'd leave out Flonne, so meh.
Anyway, the game with the best soundtrack would be Touhou Youyoumu, also known as Perfect Cherry Blossom. This soundtrack, while not enough to make you break down and cry, is just so consistently solid that it's hard to ignore it. It captures the winter setting of the game well, both the Bleak Winter and the Refreshing Winter aspects. Also... Who Done It, Necrofantasia, and their variations (Yukari and Ran's themes/stage themes) are amazing, and everyone should go and listen to them immediately. No, really. They're awesome.
Day 9: Saddest Game Scene
----------------------------
And, once again, the Blog Ball gets passed from Touhou back to Disgaea, and not without reason.
See, Disgaea is one of the few games that actually made me feel a mixture of depression and cleansing when I beat it. Mainly because the twisted creators decided to make a slightly off-the-wall game a lot more interesting by saving the emotional bomb for the final scene. Provided you didn't act like a saint throughout your first playthrough. Then, you're golden.
Anyway. I mean, yes, the game did get fairly intense towards the end, but... dangit, ALL games do that! But... To put this scene in...
Okay, I'll stop beating around the bush, and reveal the ending of Disgaea, along with my thoughts. Spoiler'd, for obvious reasons. And trust me, this is one ending you really, really don't want to spoil.
So, yes. After battling through Heaven, fully intending on beating answers out of the closest person who looks like he knows something, you find the Mastermind himself:
Seraph Lamington, one of the most awesomely good Chessmasters in gaming.
So, anyway. You find Lamington. He makes a big, very big, very awesome speech and then...
He kills Flonne. He turns her into a flower, as atonement for her sins.
I believe Laharl's reaction speaks for mine as well.

He was angry. Beyond that, actually. He was hurt, he was confused, and he wanted a reason why his angel companion had just been flowerized, and he was going to kill the nearest thing dead until it gave him one.
Yeah, I sorta felt like that as well. Not to that extent, of course, but still...
Cue epic battle.
After a grueling battle (Provided you didn't levelgrind lawlawlawl) against the Seraph, you finally strike the final blow, expecting to see a near-dead Seraph give a speech about love and stuff.
Rather, you see the Seraph, laying in a pool of his own blood, utterly dead.
Oh, and by the way... Laharl wasn't supposed to kill him. He was supposed to show mercy, and let Lamington save Flonne.
And the only reason Laharl killed him was because you (the player) acted like a jerk. And now Flonne's dead. Because of you.
...
Yeah. Probably the closest I've ever come to crying in a video game. Still nowhere near close enough to actually do it, but... It was a hammer to the skull.
Then Laharl sacrifices himself, and I'm totally cool with that.
So, yes.
I'M DONE FOR NOW, LOLOLOL~
