PokéCommunity nostalgia post #1 of ∞

Posted April 12th, 2011 at 12:13 PM by Mr Cat Dog

PC's a lot nicer than it used to be.

Maybe it's because the average age of a Pokémon fan has increased over time, allowing for a more mature and orderly forum for discussion; maybe it's because of the effectiveness of the staff in weeding out the bad apples and helping the majority with their problems; maybe it's just some weird reverse nostalgia on my part, and really everything is just the same as it ever was. Unlikely...

There's a reason for the unlikeliness of the third option. A few weeks ago, during one of my binges into some of my old posts, and of older PC in general, to try and rejig my crappy, useless memory with regards to this place - seriously, I was a Super Mod for nearly a year and I couldn't remember the name of the S-Mod forum until last week... and that was AFTER Went told me a few days after I came back! - I found a thread I made nearly six years ago in Other Chat, shown below. Take a look for yourself:

5 members to say this should be in the Light Bulb Forum without reporting
1 member to report the thread and say the above
1 mod to move the thread to "Computer/Technology Discussion" as a light bulb is a technological invention
10 members to argue the point that the light bulb has nothing to do with Computers and should be moved back to OC
3 members to state why people bothered about light bulbs and what this has to do with computers
6 members to state that light bulbs are "gay" anyway, so it doesn't matter
20 members to state that using the word "gay" as a slur is inappropriate on this forum
5 members to state that they are gay and there's nothing wrong with a gay light bulb
9 members to state that light bulbs are inanimate objects and do not have homosexual tendencies
4 members to state that even if light bulbs are in fact of a homosexual nature then there is nothing wrong with that in today's politically correct society
1 member to ask what this has to do with Pokemon
3 members to ask which Pokemon would be the best at powering a light bulbs
1 member to answer Pikachu
50 members saying that Pikachu is as "gay" as the lightbulb
50 members saying that the previous 50 members should be grateful for Pikachu as it put Pokemon and Nintendo on the video game map
1 mod to move it to Pokemon General as it is losing track of the light bulb topic
5 members to suggest a possible new light bulb Pokemon
2 members to agree on a name of "Lighty"
30 members to disregard the name as "idiotic" and "a 4 year old could think of a better name"
1 mod to warn those 30 members for flaming and to respect other people's opinions
1 member to steer the conversation back onto the topic of which Pokemon should power the light bulb, and to suggest Zapdos
7 members to inform the previous member that the power of Zapdos would easily make the light bulb explode so that would be a stupid idea
3 members to suggest if the light bulbs used in the anime were better in Pocket Monsters or Pocket Monsters AG
5 members to randomly blurt out that Ash fancies Misty
37 members to say that that had nothing to do with light bulbs
5 members from above to say that if Misty had a light bulb, it would be better than May's light bulb
37 more members to say the opposite
1 member to start a Light Bulb club in Other Clubs and to say that all posts should be made there
The thread then dies for just over a month, when...
1 new member resurrects the thread saying light bulbs are gay
60 members getting into an argument saying this thread isn't about homosexuality, and you should have just started a new thread
30 members to argue about homosexuality and the religious aspect
20 members to simply put "REPORTS (25 Character Limit!!!!!!!!!!!" in their posts
1 mod to move it to "Bad, Very Bad"

And... that's it :)

You can check out the responses to it at the time here. Reading it back did make me laugh heartily, but what got to me was everyone saying how true it was for PC at the time. After looking at some more posts from that era, I began to agree with these people from five years ago. Mini-modding, which barely exists now, was a massive concern, and loads of thread closures were preceded by phrases like: "This doesn't belong here. Go away n00b! *REPORTS*". Flamewars erupted on a daily basis over the most trivial of issues: the post jokes about Ash/May/Misty stuff, but I swear that would happen intermittently in the animé forums all the time (like a weird version of West Side Story or something!) A complete ban on contentious issues such as abortion, the death penalty homosexuality and the like was in force after the debacle known as the 'T-Dome'. (Seriously, if you think the current level of debate on these subjects is bad, just have a gander at previous OC posts over the years. The new atmosphere's positively tepid by comparison!)

Unmentioned in the post, but tying into the greater theme of the changing times of PC, was the concept of reputation (which I only remember thanks to a conversation with sammi-san). That was probably the most destructive thing about PC at the time. Essentially, if members liked posts you made, they could give you some 'reputation', represented by little green bars near where your username was. A nice idea in theory, with the general idea behind it to encourage better posting my members, but one that soon became corrupted with people forming oligopolies to try and get as many green bars as possible rather than making intelligent and thoughtful posts, creating a very unwelcoming atmosphere over the entire forum.

So... yeah. Most of what's described and mocked above seems to have gone, or has been significantly reduced. I imagine there's still politics, especially amongst the staff, but there's politics everywhere large groups of people meet. If you think PC's bad, then just be glad you're here in 2011 rather than here in 2005. I for one couldn't be happier with the transformation of this place and the evolution* it has gone under.

*Lolz. A Pokémon joke!

P.S. According to my calculator, it would take 424 members and 4 mods to change a light bulb, provided that each member and mod spoke only once.

P.P.S. Not to brag, but a Light Bulb Club was actually started in Other Clubs due to this thread.

Goodness, having joined in 2005 myself, I remember the absolute chaos the people of which you set as an example of that time would cause and I can recall just how much of a nightmare they really were. I do agree that PC has evolved tremendously since then.

Reputation was actually brought back once before sometime during the last two years, and at the mention of that you already probably surmised that it was the same old toot all over again. People craved for the green pips that would represent some kind of popularity status, and the way people spread reputation and cry about it was the equivalent of a computer virus rapidly spreading your computer and eventually leading to a collapse in your system if untreated. Reputation was from then on converted to "Post Comments" ...where you give input on a post made by a person on the forum with more of an incentive of integrity rather than cosmetic gloating.

Anywho, PC in this present year is at its peak. The staff members are dedicated individuals and not only do they do their duties, but they also voluntarily take care of the members when they're in need of support, and are rather compassionate and easy going in their own ways. The drama of 2005 is something I can never picture happening at all at this present age, and I do hope it never does.

Good to see Other Chat has progressed rapidly in the months leading up to/under my tenure. It used to be scarybad. :0

Having officially joined in 2009, I have only heard the legends and myths from the old coots concerning this time period. XD Quite interesting, to say the least.

Personally, I find flamewars INCREDIBLY amusing. Pokemon isn't Serious ****ing Business, you know. It's a game; it's an anime, whatever. However entertaining pairing wars are, I can see why forums would want to flush them out. Look what happened to NarutoFan. It may be the best known Naruto forum, but it gets made fun of all the time. Less these days, but before... -__-

On a more serious note, I have been observing the abortion forum, and have noticed how maturely everyone was debating about it. Given Pokemon has a reputation for being "kiddy," I was surprised by how 15-year-olds are behaving much more civil than the 20-year-olds on FanFiction or deviantART. I've been involved with various forums for many years, and I can tell you, the "Big Issue" threads, especially anything got to do with homosexuality, usually end up in name-calling once debatable points run dry. Again, hilarious, but does not do wonders for a forum's reputation.

I mean, if the drama does come back, I'll get the popcorn out, because after all, my goal is to enjoy my time here. Conversely, I enjoy the peace. It's a lovely change from what I'm used to.

So, no one started making suggestions about a new Light type back then? Weird.
Also, that doesn't sounds like the calm and comfortable place I know PC as at all, good thing I wasn't around yet*. Not like I would have gotten anywhere with my seventh grade second-language-English anyway.

*whenever I want to see flamewars, I can just open up any youtube video with a moderate amount of views that isn't blocked and look at the comments...for example.

This makes me wish I was here in 2005 and I wasn't 10 years old back then. Then again, I would've coped; I was a smart kid. :3

But that OC thread you made was hilarious. XDDD

Ah...I remember the Reputation feature, and I was here around when it was taken away. It's surprising that so much can change in the span of ~2.5 years here on PokeCommunity. Reputation did sound good in theory, though it was flawed in practice...I still use the "comments system" remnant of the Reputation system, occasionally.

I would assume that "flame wars" have died down here, and more intelligent discussion seems to be fostered nowadays. As long as PC grows for the better...

And LOL at that Lightbulb Thread. XD

Staff had it bad back in the '03-'05 era. Since my old account's term as S-mod overlapped with MCD's, I totally see where he's coming from. Nobody ever used the report button.

The OP of This thread posted a nude picture of herself and asked if anyone wanted to IM her. By the time someone reported it and I saw the thread, there were already several, "omg ur a bad person" and "someone PM the moderator even though he's offline" spam posts. >_>

Notice the user is banned. xD

Wow, all these inaccessible image placeholders make that person have one looong signature... Not like it wouldn't already be obnoxiously long if they were actually still functioning...

So, how were signature rules back then?
