Game: Shovel Knight
Developer: Yacht Club Games
Release Date: June 26th, 2014
Platforms: 3DS, Wii U, PC
Price: $15

I first heard of Shovel Knight through a comedian troupe on Youtube called Game Grumps. This was during Yacht Club's - the group of people who made the game - Kickstarter phase, so I didn't exactly know what to expect by watching just one level. However, when I was finally able to get my hands on the digital copy of the game for my 3DS, I was utterly blown away by the addictiveness of the game as well as the immersion that I felt playing it. If you've never heard of Shovel Knight, an easy comparison to it would be the Mega Man series: chasing after your beloved Shield Knight, your goal is to defeat and get past each of the Knight's that guard your path to eventually get to the Tower of Fate and defeat the evil Enchantress that is holding her hostage.

  • A little bit difficult at first trying to handle jumps and downward attacks jumping on enemies, but over time gradually becomes easier.
  • Hit detection with your shovel is a little too short in my opinion and can easily misjudge timing with attacks.
  • Large arsenal of weapons - almost like Castlevania based - which come in handy with each stage, as well as each stage providing many instances where each and every weapon can be used at any moment's notice to give you an advantage.
  • Upgrade system is similar to Dark Souls, where you must collect gold and treasure to upgrade
your attacks and armor as well as buy weapons. With each death you drop a percentage of your gold, where you then have one chance to go and collect it. Adds an interesting twist to the way you platform through levels, as well as creates a bit of apprehension and hesitance when approaching each stage.
  • Each stage has a unique environment, enemy design, and final boss/attack pattern which makes every stage of the game a fresh, new experience to dabble with.
  • Difficulty of the game is doable, although you'll definitely die the first few times you go through each level.

Graphics and Audio

  • If you can tell by some of my Rapid Reviews, I'm a big sucker for the "retro" look when it comes to video games. As such, Yacht Club did an excellent job modeling their game off of the looks of old school classics from the NES era (although they added 2 colors that the NES wasn't capable of producing for a little more variety.) Colors overall compliment very well with one another and everything pops out. No two colors mold together nor feel like an eye sore.
  • Absolutely brilliant. There are a lot of great pieces in the game that create feelings of adventure, suspense, and a drive to finish each level.

For a debut game from Yacht Club Games, Shovel Knight knocked the ball out of the park. It is essentially the Mega Man sequel that we've wanted for the longest time and provides a constant reminder that HD graphics are not completely necessary to make a game great. While the game is quite short in my opinion - roughly around 6-8 hours to beat - the game still has that lasting feeling where you could just play the game again and again. Each stage in the game is an amazing platforming feat just waiting to be conquered. I highly recommend people to go out and get this game if they haven't already played it.

Final Rating:

4 out of 5 Shovel Knights
