On Humanism (The Human Family)

So during the Olympics one of the commercials that showed up during the opening ceremony was one from Apple which showcases the late Dr. Maya Angelou reading an her poem The Human Family.

There are many labels all of us put upon ourselves to describe our personalities and associations. These labels range from political, social, cultural, musically, and many more to this end. All that being said if I had to distill all of my labels down to one base one that everything grows from I would have to say it is humanism.

I believe that given the opportunities and chances the vast majority of humans will help other people and also will try to support others. Politically, to this end, I identify as a socialist because I think it is everyone's responsibility to take care of everyone else. I think people have a moral obligation to support each other. Maya Angelou states that, "In minor ways we differ, in major we're the same." I think that statement really upholds my thoughts on humanity. I personally think the greatest thing a person can do is affect the lives of those around them in a positive way, my single goal in life is this. I hope that I leave this world at least a little better than I found it.

In a world increasingly chaotic where no one seems to know what's going on I think it's important to take a step back and look at how far we've come. Colonial rulers moved out and gave many different people the opportunity to govern themselves. Wars while perhaps seemingly endless are less frequent and far less deadly. Nuclear proliferation has screeched to a halt. More resources than ever are donated to humanitarian aid. We've tied together the world through globalization and made everyone economically reliant on everyone else. Sure as a species we're not perfect but we've made huge strides.

There's a right and duty we all carry I think to help our fellow humans in order to achieve the most our species can.
