2017 Life Recap

I must say, 2017 has been a year of big changes, not just around the US and world politically and economically, but for me and my mom as well.

For the purposes of this blog entry, I’m going to focus mainly on things happening in my life through 2017.

Given that there had been a bevy of changes in my life here and there starting in 2014, one of the first major changes for 2017 was that I completely rearranged my bedroom layout, including moving the bed to a new location for the first time since moving in to our current house in 1995. Unfortunately, the layout I made at that time turned out to be unsatisfactory, so I completely rearranged the bedroom again in March. I would eventually grow dissatisfied with that layout as well, and did another overhaul in September, to the furniture layout I have now.

Early on in the past year, I started doing character art on a somewhat more frequent basis. True, I had done character fan art of Molly Hale many years before then, but I felt that I needed to get back into drawing, adding new items to my DeviantArt account along the way. This eventually led to me creating my first OC ‘Susie’ ( in July. I also made fan art of other Pokémon characters, including Serena, Leaf, and Shauna.

In mid-April, I replaced our bathroom faucets (upstairs and downstairs), which eventually led me to consider getting with my dad on making plans to replumb our house, as an effort to get to do things with him after him not being in my life as much as he should have. Both of the old faucets were old and showing major signs of wear and tear-the upstairs one, in particular, had one of its handles starting to wobble and grind when turned, and had action not been taken to replace it, the faucet would have burst and caused major water damage throughout the house. Furthermore, the plumbing in our house is considerably out of whack, and has been since my mom and I moved in there.

At the beginning of June, I finally got rid of my oldest desktop computer that I still had-a Compaq Presario 2240 that a former neighbor gave to me in November 2001. That particular computer was a model from early 1998, having Windows 95 OSR2 on it. It was the first computer that I used for accessing the Internet at home, when we got dial-up service with NetZero in March 2002. Though already obsolete when I began using it, especially after getting Internet access, and I had gotten a brand-new computer shortly after my birthday that year, I kept it for all of those succeeding years, and in the past few years before I officially got rid of it, I would occasionally turn it on and run it just to relive the memories of my later childhood and Windows 95, but then I eventually realized that I would have to get rid of it sooner or later. These days, though, whenever I have a nostalgic drive for Windows 9x, I have virtual machines with Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98 via VirutalBox that I run every once in a while.

Shortly after the Independence Day holiday, as another effort to start doing things with my dad more, I gave him some help along the way in cleaning up my family’s rental property that an estranged aunt of mine left blighted, especially after the house that was originally on it burned to the ground in March 2014, followed by her spending the next three years on that property in a fifth wheel camper. The cleanup effort took my dad the entire summer to accomplish, though my help was certainly appreciated as little as it may have seemed.

The day after Labor day, a key changed happened with my job: I officially was hired in at my workplace as a staff and no longer worked there as a trainee, as I had been since 2009. The staff there had been wanting to hire me in for quite a while before then. Though the changes were relatively minor on the surface, this was an important step up for me.

One of the most significant changes in my life for 2017 was that I spent much of the year off and on looking through my things and getting rid of a lot of those items and papers that I don’t care about and/or I don’t need anymore, including the aforementioned Compaq Presario. Though I did accomplish quite a bit with this task, I have sometimes felt that I need to get rid of more, but haven’t been able to muster up the will to do so for the past couple of months. Many of the items that I got rid of were donated to Goodwill.

On the other hand, though, my relationship as a son with my mother has become increasingly strained throughout 2017, to the point where I’ve wanted to move out on my own. I eventually began hinting around at this to my dad, but he said it would be best for me to stay with my mom and continue to help each other out. I’ve been trying to improve at this recently, including prayer, and doing other things at home to cope with my stresses. One of my coping skills over the past couple of years has been to write down my rants, though I still rant to my mother, and I really know I shouldn’t do that anymore. So many things have been going on in the world to anger me, and I don’t want to bottle up my feelings to the point where I end up doing something extremely bad. Another way for me to try to cope towards the end of the year was to play the Virtual Console versions of the Game Boy-era Pokémon games on my 2DS, including getting Gold and Silver when they finally were re-released, allowing me to play those Generation II games legally for the first time since 2006, in addition to the Generation I games that I had since shortly after their 2016 re-release.

Looking into the new year, I’m hoping and praying and searching that I will get a new, better paying job, and something that I can really enjoy and benefit from. I’m hoping to start working with my dad on re-plumbing my mom’s house not too far into this year, and have already begun pricing supplies that will be needed, so that my mom and I have an idea how much the parts will cost. Additionally, I’m really looking forward to getting Pokémon Crystal when it comes out for the 3DS family late this month. Though I don’t plan on getting either Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon any time soon, given my dissatisfaction with their immediate predecessors, I’m hoping to complete the Generation I (Red, Blue, and Yellow) games, and at least get to Mount Silver on Generation II this year. Additionally, I plan on continuing drawing at least sometimes throughout the year, not just of Molly, but other characters, and hopefully come up with some more original characters for myself.
