Watermarking what's not yours

Posted December 24th, 2009 at 5:54 AM by Hiroshi Sotomura

If anyone were to look up an episode on YouTube of say, Pocket Monsters, before any HD uploads become available, often the attention-seeking video posters tend to upload the videos with a nice little watermark on them. Sometimes they take up 1/6 of the screen. Sometimes they're one-liners. But god, why are they so persistent?

Hell, half the time they didn't encode the video to begin with - instead, they stole off some random place like Youku. :| The other problem? Youku's quality is already average, so ripping the FLVs and then putting them together only creates a heck of a lot of quality loss. Sometimes it's often to the point that the video is almost unwatchable.

In other news, this afternoon I will feast on a nice [???="Numero Duo"]Christmas cake[/???].

I can see how to watermarks can really get in the way of viewing .:/ If it's not your content in the first place then why bother watermarking it? I guess people love attention.

It's been a while since Ive had a nice Christmas cake. Enjoy your day!
