2012 brings new things to discover as well as uncertainty about the future. It also brings more of that 2012 doomsday BS that has been running rampant the past few years, despite common sense and scientists actually proving that the predicted Mayan doomsday will not happen! But that still doesn't stop idiots like Discovery Channel, History Channel, Patrick Geryl and other morons from continuing to shove their doomsday shows and books down our throats!

Since the world will end in 356 days from now (we are in a leap year, so we have the 29th of February), I've decided to have my own fun with this "phenomenon". Don't worry, I'm not going to talk about how the earth will suddenly reverse its magnetic fields or anything like that. I lack the intelligence to make sense of that stuff.

The reason for this title if I'm not going to talk about 2012? A certain 80's song that critics think is probably the worst song in history.

Paid for something you never bought? Talk to management!

We have all had moments where we buy something and we discover we were overcharged or paid for something we never actually bought. Most of the time, we sort of do nothing to rectify it because we don't realize it. At least that is what I think.

My Mom and I went food shopping as usual on the weekends. I went with her to help out because she had a tweaked knee. So we go get our groceries and she went to pay for it while I made a quick stop to get some tortilla chips for my weekly Italian bread sandwich and get a couple boxes of cherry flavored candy canes.

When I bought my things and went to see her, she already paid for the food and we were about to leave when she told me we spent $270 worth of food. That brought out a major red flag. We never spent THAT much on groceries before. We usually are in the $140-$160 range every time we go shopping. We somehow had paid for a number of items we didn't have or even noticed!

So the two of us plead our case to one of the people at the customer service desk, saying that we somehow paid for items that we did not have. For the next 30 minutes or so, the three of us went through every item that was on the receipt, trying to see which items we did buy and which items that weren't there.

What really helped was one of the managers came by and we discussed what happened. The manager then said she'll rescan all of our items at a register that wasn't being used. That way we found out what we really paid for. After all that, we really had $150 worth of food, so we paid over $120 extra for stuff we didn't have. I think the reason was that the person who was originally scanning our items didn't finish the past person's order and tacked on the total of that to our bill.

In the end, we got the $120 refunded to Mom's credit card and they threw in a $25 gift card as a little "we're sorry for the problem" gesture.

This is why we shop at that store all the time. Good customer service. Very good.

In closing, if you ended up paying for something you never bought anyway, talk to management and get it rectified. It doesn't hurt.

That's good that you got it all sorted out!

I actually read your title as backwards though, as there are cases in which we were NOT charged for something we bought. Most people just take it and go, but my family will always make sure the error is known.

I have to say that was really nice of them to give you a $25 gift card.

My Mom and I would have been happy with getting the $120 refunded, but that card is a nice gesture for their mistake. I don't know if many stores these days will do that sort of thing.

From my experience with retail outlets, I think that sort of treatment would be the exception, not the norm. Most stores I can think of would probably refund you the mistake without too much fuss, but not too many would go and make a gesture of apology like that.
