Screw you, imageshack (rant)

Posted February 14th, 2012 at 6:38 PM by bobandbill

So last night I went over to imageshack to upload some images when I got a lovely message to show up:

Quote:
You have 3199 photos stored. Since you're over the 500 photo limit you'll need to upgrade to a Premium account or you'll only be able to keep 500 of your recent photos. Older photos will expire on the 1st of March.
There was no email about this. Or warning or discussion that it might happen. Their 'blog' has not had an update since late '10. Nope, just a 'hey if you want to keep your stuff even though we said initially anything uploaded will stay forever you have to pay now!' message.

Not that terrible an issue given all my uploaded pictures are on my computer anyways... besides the fact that my picture Let's Play of Telefang, something I have been updating for over a year and with about 3000 of those images now part of it I believe being currently uploaded on imageshack.

So now I have to either pay a few bucks a month to keep it there (but if I stop paying at any point bye bye images!) or if I want to continue the LP I will need to start over again from the very beginning because those image urls aren't going to replace themselves.

FML.

And it's probably the latter (or ditching the whole thing) because I'm not paying for what is just a hobby in sharing some laughs over an engrish game with others (if I wanted to pay money I'd go and get my own website for it!), and certainly not paying money for what is basically blackmail. I can afford it but I don't want to, and I'd need to pay continously too. Sure in hindsight I should have used (someotherhostingsite) but some had bandwidth issues at the time and imageshack wasn't sucky then when I started. SO MUCH FOR THAT

It also begs the question - what are the chances of other image hosting sites changing policy like that on the spot? After all, if one of the big ones said that stuff would stay forever and then backflips, why won't others do the same? =/

Bah humbug etc. And I know a lot of other people will be affected by this too, including other LPers.

This is why I switched from imageshack as soon as they stopped hosting animated gifs without premium.

Imageshack to me is more trouble that its worth. It even blocks domains that are unregistered from even displaying images :(

This is also why I also recommend people to try their best to stay away from Imageshack. I personally use Photobucket myself, and it used to have a 500MB total stored limit (or was it 1GB?). I think it's lifted as long as it's not abused now.

This is why I'm not on board with the cloud and will happily keep all my music on an mp3 player.

Why dont you just get multiple imageshack accounts with 01,02,03 etc in the username?

I considered it too but by then I had a lot of picturs for my LP (and other things) already uploaded, so it'd still be the same outcome unless I had predicted this then somehow and started over earlier. =(

At the time photobucket's limit that had been in place was not enough for myself with the additional LP pictures.

Yeah, I'm usually sticking with harddrives myself for files I wish to keep. Pity it doesn't work too easily with images for LPs but oh well.

That would only solve part of the problem. I would have to reupload all the pictures anyway and still need to replace all the image urls if did that, so it's not really a solution with my LP.
