...to make someone's Christmas a little more merrier. Today, my inner element of Generosity caused me to do this, and it doesn't even matter if I'm her most favorite person ever, but I really want to see her move forward in life.
So I have this co-worker friend, she was the first co-worker I met when I first started at my new workplace. She's mainly a night stocker but she's now a cashier. She's 10 years older than me and is a single mother of two little boys. A few nights ago when I was called in to help out the stock team, I spotted her during my break and chatted with her a little. Asked me if she could catch a ride with me when we both got off. I granted. When we got off work, I drove her up to her apartment and then started to tell me that she's going to have to call up a friend tomorrow because she goes back the next morning. Her car's been sitting in her parking spot for a couple days because it didn't have enough gas for her to drive to work. She hasn't been able to fill up her gas tank in months because the gas prices were too high. She's waiting for them to go down. Gas prices right now are ~2.50 a gallon and they're expected to go down even more. It's relief for the majority of us, but still not for her. She's still struggling to make ends meet. Even though we got paid this week, she still could not afford to fill up her tank. All the money went towards bills, and buying last minute Christmas gifts for her family.
I texted her earlier today to see how she was doing. She was at work at the time. Since I cancelled my plans to go to San Diego, I offered her to give her a ride back to her home and she accepted. She would get off at around 6 pm. When we arrived to her apartment, I stopped in front of her parked car. Told her that I'd be more than welcome to drive her car to the gas station to fill up her car while she would attend to her boys. She started to cry tears of joy and hugged me tight. Gave her $40, with the gas prices right now it'd probably be enough for at least 2 tanks. The month of December has hit her hard financially, and she's one of the most hard-working employees in my workplace. She deserves this so much. In the meantime I also bought toys for her two little boys. :3
It felt really good in the end. She no longer has to suffer from having to wait for the bus to come by every hour here in this town or to bother someone. She no longer needs to walk five blocks or so to the daycare to drop off her boys, and if she ever needed any assistance, she's got my number. Life is tough, yes...but as humans we work together to get through it.
