Some of you may or may not know this about me, but I used to be a huge Pokemon fanatic back in the day. Not to say that I don't like Pokemon nowadays, but rather just not as passionately. When I first joined PokeCommunity back in 2009, I had a very large trade center here, so large to the point that it still stands today 7 years later as of the largest on the site (kudos to you ~RNC~ for keeping your shop going after all these years, that's awesome passion and dedication.) That being said, it's been awhile since I've actually devoted myself to a Pokemon game. With Pokemon X and Y, I only played through about half the game before getting bored, and I completely skipped over Generation 6 with Pokemon Black (2) and White (2.) So the last time I've actually played through a Pokemon game was Platinum all the way in 2009.

However, something about Pokemon Sun and Moon has really struck a cord with me. The fact of the matter is that the Pokemon Company is taking a huge risk by completely shaking up the formula of the game. Whether you think that's a good thing or not, that will vary from person to person. Personally? Thank. Fucking. Christ. In my opinion, the formula for Pokemon has become pretty stale as of late, causing what I would like to believe many 90s kids who grew up on the game to start to shrug off the games. Pokemon will always be popular, as it targets well towards a young audience, but a small percentage group - which I fall into - has probably been growing weary of the same old formula (think Call of Duty if you want a series to parallel this idea with.)

But let me just start with the actual Pokemon. In the most recent generations, it can be argued that some designs and name are either too lazy or too complicated than say the first generation (note: as said prior, I haven't played Gen 5, but I've looked over the Pokedex to get a better understanding of the Pokemon.) However, although some names have changed, there is an actual theme this time around. Unlike past generations, the Pokemon actually look like they either originated from this particular region or have qualities of "island-esque" features or characteristics. Furthermore, the Pokemon Company actually has the balls to take existing Pokemon and redefine them to match the island they are on. You've got Pokemon like Vulpix and Ninetales being Ice Pokemon now, Rattata and Raticate being reskinned, and Jynx being a hula dancer now. These changes are unheard of , but they are an amazing redirection for the series in my opinion. I can't wait to see what else they have in store for this upcoming generation in terms of the Pokemon.

Then there's the actual battling. This time around, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Gyms and Gym Leaders are not a thing in this game. Instead, we have Trial Captains and challenges. Four of them to be precise. While I don't know if the specifics of these challenges and trials you'll have to face are out there, I'm really hoping these challenges that we need to overcome are similar to the Battle Frontier from Pokemon Emerald. How awesome would it be if you had to rent Pokemon in order to overcome a challenge, or if specific hazards or statuses were automatically applied to your Pokemon which would make you need to strategize more? Or what if you had to battle a Captain that's Pokemon was automatically scaled to be 5 levels higher than your Pokemon? These are just some pondering that I've been musing over.

There's also the concept of Z moves that I think is really rad which will make Battlers be more calculative and it opens up the possibility of more moveset combos, but for the sake of this entry I'll cut my excitement here. Hopefully, this will be the right direction that the game series goes in and Pokemon Sun and Moon receives a good reception from critics. What about you guys? What are you most excited for with Pokemon Sun and Moon? Or are you thinking of passing over the game? Comment below as I'd love to hear and discuss with you what you have to say about this topic!
