Mario vs. Sonic?! [also, a life update]

In any class, there's always that one speaker who just blows you away. This person is super funny, charismatic, and not afraid of presenting on unusual topics. In my speech class, there frankly is only one person who seriously rules at presentations. I always look forward to his speeches.

His introduction to his persuasive speech was humorously promising: he showed a picture of a nuclear explosion and had the words "something very important" on his first slide.

What was he going to try to persuade us on? What, is that next slide a picture of
MARIO VS. SONIC???

:D YAY Finally, a speech not about stop texting while driving, stop smoking, joining some group on campus, start eating healthy, BORING. Bring on the video game topics!

This Mario vs. Sonic speech can take multiple paths. The presenter can be for Sonic, and I'd definitely make a new friend. He can be for Mario, and with enough silly anecdotes about his childhood, can persuade me to like and play more Mario games.

Or: He can be for Mario and makes a very crude speech. :(

Maybe this was his intention all along, but I'm so weirded out. I just have to type out some of my thoughts (besides, I have to defend Sonic!).

Before I begin, here's (off the top of my head) the Mario games I've played:
Super Mario Bros, various Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Yoshi's Story, Super Smash Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, Mario & Sonic at Winter Olympics and still worth mentioning:
A little bit of Super Mario Sunshine before I returned it (bad disc)
A little bit of Super Mario Bros. 3

All great games. Honest!

However, this was a persuasive speech on Mario vs. Sonic: who is the better role model.

The presenter emphasizes that he is ONLY concerned with the 8-bit and 16-bit gaming era. He amusingly clarified that movies and cartoons are especially not up for debate.

First argument: JOBS
The presenter's main points: Mario is a plumber (also, has assumed the role of a doctor, etc); Sonic "does nothing" and has no job, unless being an "air freshener" counts

My response: Sonic's a 15 year old hedgehog. Why does he need a job? The presenter argues that Sonic is a drifter (a person who is continually moving from place to place and has no fixed home/job). That's not necessarily a bad trait. On the contrary, it's something many of us yearn for: to be free like the wind. Sonic leads his life the way he wants to, adventures and all.

What does Sonic do in his spare time? He's saving his world. Among various prominent qualities of Sonic, one is that he hates oppression and will fight for the freedom of others. Another very distinctive characteristic of Sonic is that he hates tears. He's very loyal to his friends. He will stop at nothing to save them. If they're hurt, someone is gonna get hurt (i.e. Dr. Robotnik).

Sonic's friends are disappearing and in their place, evil metal robots are popping up. Dr. Robotnik is trapping the animals, turning them into robots, and forcing them to build his ultimate weapon, which aims to conquer Sonic's world. Dr. Robotnik's quite the threat as he boasts an I.Q. of 300 and apparently has infinite resources (or a sky-high budget?). Sonic doesn't need to be asked, paid, or praised to go save his friends; he just does it. Sonic definitely demonstrates some good morals. He's the one I wanna be when I grow up and would look up to.

Oh, about the air freshener comment. It was delivered as if an after thought, but merchandise of it exists. Sonic spaghettios fed your kid, too...? What, why mention merchandise? Moving on...

---

Second argument: SIDEKICKS
The presenter's main points: Mario's sidekick is Luigi; Sonic's sidekick is Miles Tails Prower, who is an 8 year old boy "being forced to do a man's job," "serves as Sonic's helicopter ride," and is reminiscent of "Kony sending children to fight"

My response: Tails is an orphan. He got the name Tails because of his unique two tails – a rarity he was also sometimes bullied for. Who befriended and stuck up for Tails? Sonic. They're inseparable. Tails dreamed of being like Sonic. Tails wanted to catch up with Sonic and eventually learned how to whirl about his tails to give him a boost – whoosh!

Their bond rivals the bond between brothers.

At no time is Tails forced to do anything. He's helping out Sonic with his own unique abilities. It was extremely distasteful to hear the presenter compare Sonic/Tails to Kony 2012. Tails does not operate guns or machinery during the classic gaming era. Even after, Tails creates mechs, rockets, airplanes, and so on. Yup, Tails creates machines that rival that of Dr. Robotnik's skill. Badass kid! Tails is arguably the better sidekick. Sonic is not mistreating him. On the contrary, Sonic goes in alone during intense final boss battles (unless you're obviously playing as Tails only).

---

Third argument: (I forgot)
The presenter is ambiguous here and shows 2 pictures

My response: Honestly I forgot the third argument, if one existed. Perhaps I was so appalled about the jobs/sidekicks and the disrespect for Sonic/Tails that I stopped listening.

The presenter showed one slide of the official cover art of Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix for the Gamecube. UM. HULLO. That is not a classic game.

The next slide was terrible Sonic fanart. First, how appropriate to not use official Sonic art –sarcasm-. That there fudge's up the audiences perception of Sonic. I hope to God that they could recognize that it was fanart. Second, why argue against Sonic's character and capabilities as a role model by posting a fan's representation of Sonic? That Sonic fanart was seriously... Sickening. Tall, lanky, uncool, and more human-like than 2006 and wtf did I see male nipples THANKS I almost vomited. No no no I cannot help that many fanartists of all fanbases are sick in the head.

Overall, this speech did not last the required minimum of 5 minutes. If only the presenter added more substance or more research. Mario fans out there, maybe you can do a better job...? Both Mario and Sonic are good iconic characters. I just feel that Sonic has the better capabilities as a role model, despite my limited knowledge of the Mario fandom. At the very least, Sonic promotes living free, running and exercising, losing weight, and of course rolling around at the speed of sound (user discretion is advised).

Seriously, I am open to the other side. I'm not so mean as to say HEY MARIO STINKS as a role model because he shows kids it's okay to eat shrooms. Pfft. Sonic @ casino levels? Tempting. :D

tl;dr go read it. Mario vs. Sonic is like, your childhood. Which one did/would you more look up to?

One final update about my studies and my life: I have a ton of assignments due within the next 10 days. I'll be on a slight hiatus until March 30th. Go play with twistedpuppy in the mean time!

Excellent review, Blade. The guy totally failed on what could have been an excellent presentation. Wow, though... I can't believe he blew it that bad xD
