This week, our heroes finally make it to Ecruteak, where they meet Morty....and I can finally explain how Mega Evolution and Z Moves can exist in GSC!
I also set up some foreshadowing for later on in this storyline by discussing the Gekijou theater, its conventions and its instruments (Ash gets a bansi, and Brock gets a vina in an episode coming up shortly--they do play them often during summer festivals and in celebrations of traditional Kanto and Johto culture.) However, Brock won't truly get a Western-style harp (what he really wants to play) until Pokemon Shine Diamond.
The Gekijou style of theater is mainly a blend of Chinese opera and Japanese kabuki theater--very showy over the top spectacles. I plan to elaborate on it in detail when the Kimono Girls are introduced next week.
The only major change I made to this episode was deleting the scene with the Itemfinder salesman and Team Rocket--mainly to help tighten up the episode a little. (The Itemfinder salesman does get referenced in part 2, but he didn't really serve a purpose here, so he went on the cutting floor. Team Rocket's appearances work best when they show up unannounced, so they're in the wings for part 2)
Next time, our heroes team up with Morty to chase Team Rocket off!
