Meet the PokeCommunity'ers #17: God (Lisa Fischer, FoxTrot, Pointy Bits FF7) [Daily Bloggity Entry #239]

Posted August 2nd, 2015 at 1:00 PM by El Héroe Oscuro

"Meet the PokeCommunity'ers" is a series of the Daily Bloggity in which I have a one-on-one with specific members of PC in which we can get to know them more. All responses are in their own words, and questions were made on a general basis. If you would like to see a specific user in the next edition, comment below! This will be a weekly series appearing in the Daily Bloggity at 5 PM Eastern Time every Sunday.

Date: 02 August 2015
Time: 3:15 PM ET
Mood: Embracing my inner Ron Burgandy

When did you become a member of PokeCommunity and how did you come across it?
God, this is like a '90s sitcom flashing back to a story in the '80s... I'm getting bad vibes here. I originally joined a site in the vein as Pokemon Crater (rest in peace!) called tPPC, which surprisingly is still alive despite me joining back in late 2007. Anyway, I joined that place and after an incident where I may or not have flamed the single two most popular members of the forum (an engaged couple at that) over her not liking a thread of mine, I decided I was too cool to grace the forum with my presence any longer and thus I spread my vulture wings and flew off. In about January 2008 I joined the now totally ravaged by time Pe2k and settled down rather nicely. I was 14 and such a likable person back then :) In those days, many members of the forum threw around PC as a slur with such vehemence that it was akin to saying a racial slur of some kind. Which, it being 2008 and Edgy Internet still being in full swing, we (yes, we! alas, I am a fake liberal! j'accuse!) usually did in the next sentence as well. Anyway, as I still actively hungered for everything Pokémon-related back then, I spread my vulture wings yet again in mid-2008 and flew off to this 'PokéCommunity'. I landed, almost immediately integrated myself as a Totally Random XD member with Funky Green Custom Text and here I am today, vulture wings larger than ever.

Considering you have been here on PC since 2008, how would you say the site has changed as a whole since you've joined?
The phrase that came to mind upon reading the question was 'the more things change, the more things stay the same'. Pessimism! Idk, I like to think that I've been a pretty constant scribe of sorts when it comes to social changes - the Year of the Clique in 2009; which coincided with the Year where All the Site Admins Left or Were Fired; the Year where Nothing of Any Real Importance Happened in 2010, the flood of chatty, loveable and modable new members in 2011 which I now deem the New Kids on the Block; 2012 I actually don't remember because I turned legal age in 2011 and I spent the rest of the next year working and drinking my lightweight ass off but I'm pretty sure 2012 was the year of the New Mods on the Block; 2013 was the year that began the formative changes to what we know as today's PC, Year Zero in a way; 2014 was the year that I disappeared without a trace but judging from my research 2014 was the Year of Uwu and 2015 has been the Year of Smiles and Frowns. I don't think things are that much different, really. I don't look back on the years past and think 'wow! Things were so much different then! I'm blinded by the sepia tone!'. I just take it as it is. I think the only two major differences I can think of have to do with staff 'mission statements' and the overall lighter community atmosphere. Staff are no longer hiding in their forums, only coming out to issue mandates when it pleased them. They're certainly a lot more hands on with their respective forums. That being said, the staff as a whole haven't changed much. Most of them were staff back when I was just a young little girl in 1947, and the newer ones over the years resemble them in nearly every way. Just enough genetic variety to keep the place flowing, I guess.

Likewise, the average member is still the same - mostly friendly, following a very strict set of social guidelines that were determined eons ago and they tend to fall into two groups: sweet and positive, cynical but well-liked. Determined to do the best for the forum and genuinely liking others and their wide-eyed exploration of the place. Unwilling to get into a disagreement in public but perfectly willing to cut that member to shreds in a private Skype chat. Social changes on here come and go and groups rise and decline but the average member is still the same. I don't think that stability is necessarily a bad thing, but if there was one thing I wish the typical PC member did more, it would be thinking less about the idealistic community you've got in your head and saying what's actually on your mind and sticking by those thoughts. It's really not a big deal if you get disagreed with or fail to make a change - at least you got up off your ass.

What is the significance or origin behind your username? Past usernames?
God - used it on another forum a year or so before, thought it'd be good to go back to it for a bit. Why I initially chose it was simply because it's a good username wherever you go, and it's short and sweet. Also I have a really big pseudo-ego.

Harley Quinn - ah, Harley Quinn. The name I hungered after for so long because it's a perfect representation of me.

The rest are from like 2013 and earlier and idc enough to go into that.

Do you believe that you'll be sticking with the username 'God' once the new username changes come around, or do you think you'll change it to something? If the latter, any hints as to what you might change to?
I was talking to Klippy about this like two days ago and I'll probably go back to my classic PC identifier Harley Quinn, as I think it's just a more fun name to post around with. But I will be saving God because I'm selfish and I love it!

Which forum do you see yourself gravitating towards the most and why?
I tend to pick at the carrion in Round Table because as a Super Liberal™, I need to make my voice heard and luckily for me, I'm very good at getting my point across and hopefully getting others to reconsider their viewpoints somewhat. As well as a genuine wish to get others to have a deeper understanding of current injustices in the world, there's definitely the prideful aspect of getting into a debate and hopefully coming out with a few scalps while I'm at it. I think a lot of people give me a lot more credit to my apparent arrogance than there actually is, but I can see why they'd think the way they do when they see my responses to when I think my intellectual pride is at stake.

To those people who believe that you are being "arrogant," what would you like to say to them? Do you believe they are correct about you being "arrogant" at times, or do you disagree with their notion?

How would you say you deal with criticism as a whole? This may refer to your interactions in real life, on the site, or both.
It alternates between extreme highs and extreme lows, I think. Sometimes I feel like God herself could say I was going straight to hell and I'd tell her 'that's nice' and walk into Sodom & Gomorrah totally naked, other times I spend hours on end reflecting upon all the criticisms and thinking I'm such an awful person, I cause far more damage than good, no one should talk to me, etc. That being said, I act the same regardless of my current feelings because the last thing I want is pity or an empty reassurance that I'm a great person or whatever. If I'm feeling Super! then I'll want you to agree with me and if I'm feeling Muk! then I'll want to be agreed on that too.

I don't take criticisms from other people that badly though, I tend to process them with whatever feeling I had the minute before and leave it with that. I usually have a mood of irritable joy, so I'll laugh off the usually correct criticism and make a joking mental note to garrote them sometime. As terribly Sylvia Plath as it is, woe is me, my worst critic is myself. I'm relentlessly harsher on myself than most people are and sometimes all it takes is a reflection on my current life in order to spiral into a period of downright suicidal self-hatred and whatever. Sylvia Plath could never understand the depths I drag myself down to sometimes!

Needless to say, I'm a bundle of fun when it comes to emotions.

Daily Music - "How Can I Ease The Pain" by Lisa Fischer
Spoiler:

If you could make any improvement to the site, what would it be and why? If you can't think of anything, what would you like to stay consistent?
Without any disrespect intended, I'd shuffle around a lot of the staff because of either a) different ideas for some of their core beliefs about the community or (and perhaps my main point) b) they've simply been around far too long and need to make way for fresh ideas, fresh people, fresh prince. It's just not practical to have the same gears grinding for so long, no matter how good they've been at keeping the community running previously. However, this can't really be applied to the tech people as only the good Lord knows how this site really functions. But if there were ever to be a suitable number of people with the suitable tech skills to become the new gears for the forum, I see no reason why my earlier thought shouldn't come into play.

I'm being careful with my phrasing as I do mean none of what I said with disrespect and there tends to be a lot more acid perceived than actually said.

I think it's safe to say that you aren't trying to disrespect anyone. Personally, I feel that one should be able to speak openly about these kind of matters without backlash as there isn't any malice behind what you say. So by what I'm reading the Admins - i.e. the people who for the most part do the most coding - should be able to retain their position, but the other staff members should relinquish it after a given amount of time, correct? What time frame do you think would be suitable for this in which a change must be made to each position, and do you believe that once a staff member relinquishes their position they can apply to get it back?
I place the tech team above others in my statement because any good staff member when trained enough in the dojo of PC Affairs can suitably run the management side of things, but lord knows how hard it is to have input on that AND tinker around with forum software and coding and whatever and not give consciousness to Skynet. They're needed for the very literal running of the forum and until someone could take their place, it's simply not rational to remove them for the time being.

I think 5 to 6 years is more than enough time to have been a staff member on the forum, really. By that point, you're usually in your mid 20s and have given countless moments of contribution while all that while balancing the much more important issues of college (graduation), work and in some cases, a family. I don't think there's enough change on the forum that results in someone leaving the dojo, so to speak.

And no, I think if you were to step down under this policy, you'd have to stay a regular member or whatever you were before you were promoted. PC isn't that big a deal where you should Fight! For your right! To paaaaaaarrtake in moderating a Pokémon forum when you're pushing 45!

That being said, I think it'd be wise to have some sort of record where leaving staff members could list how they would do things in certain situations and use that as a continued reference for decisions, as there's no problem with that in my eyes. Just because they're shriveled up doesn't mean that their contributions are void.

If you could moderate any section, which section which you choose and why? What would be the section you would least like to moderate?
Honey, every person who reads this will know what section I want to moderate.

The section I'd least like to moderate would probably be anything to do with Pokémon or The Playground. For the former, I'd go crazy because I know piss all about the current state of Pokémon and lord knows I'd run out of Max Repels for the extremely Pokédedicated before I understood half of what they've crammed into their skulls. Just let me stick to using Swampert and knowing that might = right and not knowing anything about EVs and natures and whatever. For the latter, The Playground is just too rabid for me to step foot in, let alone moderate. Way too much activity and not much in the way of conversation, which totally works for some people and totally doesn't for me.

Which generation of Pokemon would you say you stopped playing at?
I wouldn't say I've stopped playing, as I was very close to having a cardiac arrest after dying to Wallace's final Pokémon in a psyducking goddamn mukty ass Nuzlocke run last weekend. But I lost interest in actually obtaining physical copies of the games after Gen 4. I don't have that much interest in Nintendo's main catalogue and Pokémon would be the only realistic reason why I'd buy a 3DS or whatever. Maybe Ace Attorney if there were less weeaboos tainting it for me. But I just don't have the money to justify my slight interest in the newer games. Pokémon will probably always remain somewhat special for me, at least until my early 30s, but I doubt if I'll pay for a new game ever again.

Why does The Playground not work for you based on what you wrote? Do you believe the current state of The Playground is a bad thing?
It's not a bad thing, it's just not for me. I don't like mindless +1 stuff (unless it's a music thread) and god help me if I step foot into TCTI or whatever it's called nowadays. I'll leave 2009 right where it belongs, thank you.

Who would you consider a role model for yourself, in real life and/or on PC?
Honestly, I have no role models? I've always been acutely aware of how I don't have a figure I actively want to emulate or whatever. There are people who represent certain qualities that I'd like to see more of in myself, but I don't like... seek out a way to become more like them.

What kind of qualities would you like to see more in yourself? And if you recognize these qualities, why not try to emulate them?
*stares down at feet, does the patented Nervous and Self-Doubting Rachel McAdams in any Rom-Com Smile™*

I'd like to stop brushing every little thing off with humour, which I do so often because I don't think there's much else of me. What I mean by that is that my trademark wit tends to act as rather see-through shield for the fact that there isn't much substance to me aside from deep sadness, a cynical apprehensiveness and an interest in film. I'm not good at small talk because while I can easily make a person laugh and make the conversation fun, I find it hard to talk about me because there just isn't much to talk about. I have no problem talking about myself, I'm an open person, there's just little to be open about, I guess. Maybe I'm being far too critical of myself once again but that's how I see it.

Another quality I'd like more of is some Good Ol' Friendliness, as silly as that sounds. I seem to have made a name for myself as the delightfully acid-tongued woman who people like but don't really go to for warmth. It bothers me as while I accept my limitations and how I'm not someone people go to for classic kinship, I want to be someone who my friends do see as a warm person if she's had her coffee that morning. I'm not a mean person, and I've made it clear that my ultimate goal in life is to be the loving mother I never had, but I don't show enough of the calm, affectionate qualities needed to be a loving mother and a good friend.

Now, I've been thinking a lot about this lately and it's probably one of the biggest flaws I perceive in the woman that is Adriana: sometimes I think I'm just incapable of truly caring for anyone but myself. The problem with that is that I don't care about myself. I have little interest in my own body or truly attaining any goals (or even having them) or anything that a healthy, vain person would have interest in. But nonetheless, I'm very focused on me. I can't help but wonder if all my nice words to others, my apparent declarations of love for my friends, are just said so that I don't feel bad about not feeling the special something that you're supposed to feel when you say those things. That's a very ugly sentence in terms of grammar but I'm hardly one to care about grammar on the internet. Anyway, there's something said about Sofia Lamb in Bioshock 2 that troubles me: she spreads her care for each and every being so thin that she is left unable to truly feel affection for anything but her own idealised self. I'm paraphrasing and I think I added in the last 5 words on my own, but I digress. I can't even say that this truly bothers me? Like... I don't feel anything when I type this? It's just so matter of fact to me.

Daily Comic - "Ice Bucket Challenge" by Bill Amend of FoxTrot
Spoiler:

What is your favorite pokemon and why?
Dragonair thanks there is only one

If you were granted a wish and could wish for anything - besides more wishes and more genies - what would you wish for and why?
Some nice c cups, the financial freedom to totally move on with my life and never see a member of my family again and finally, world peace. Thank you, judges.

If you don't mind me asking, why don't you want to see members of your family anymore?
It's fine to ask, I just don't know how much to divulge, exactly. I'll keep it simple: unforgivable physical child abuse, emotional abuse into my late teens and nowadays an indifference to my existence. A lot of things that would probably make you sick, which is why I won't get into the specifics. Bad parents, bad human beings in general. My siblings just see me as a non-entity and my extended family just see me as the evil gay cousin who shouldn't have happened in the first place. I don't mind being open about my family issues, I just hate how it sounds on paper because it makes me look like some ungrateful brat or whatever. And I mean, there have been good moments, but they're far outweighed by the simple reality of them being bad people.

What is your favorite video game or series and why?
Hmm... probably Final Fantasy? There really isn't nothing I like in a game more than the feeling I get after grinding to death and then killing some nihilistic super demon or whatever. That being said, I have a soft spot for COD & games of that ilk purely because sometimes I like to Get My Hetero On and kill Russians while eating Doritos during cutscenes. Idk, I have a lot of franchises that I like. Civilisation, Dead Space, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, Bioshock, Street Fighter/Tekken/DOA, Portal, it goes on.

What are your thoughts on the introduction of Exoskeletons in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare? Do you have a favorite Call of Duty game?
I just play campaign and whatever makes COD less cloneish is fine by me; the 13 year old COD essayists can debate the ethics of exoskeletons as long as they like. As for favourite COD game, uh..... MW3? That game was just brutal. There was no reason for Soap to die, I tell you. We were robbed that day. But if he didn't die, then killing Makarov just wouldn't have that Greek epic level of satisfaction.

Who is your favorite video game character and why?
GLaDOS! If I were someone who could kill thousands of people on a split-second whim, GLaDOS is the best representation of me. @shenanigans believes that I'm her anyway.

I also think Sofia Lamb is a fantastic character and is also a lot like me in some aspects, some of which I find rather troubling if I examine them too closely.

If you had to rank the three Bioshock's in order from best to least favorite, how would you rank them and why?
2
1
The psyducking hack minigames in 2
Infinite

Daily Video - "Pointy Bits (FF7 Parody)" by animator OneyNG
Spoiler:

What would you say is your dream vacation?
idk greece or rome
somewhere that my history nut self can overdose on everything there is to offer without having a heatstroke (sorry egypt)

Who is your favorite artist/song?
uhhhhhhhhhhh honestly I care a lot more about movies than music and have a lot more thoughts about cinema than I do music
My music taste is mostly vapid as hell and I make no secret of that

Fair enough. But you won't be able to escape me that easily - what is your favorite movie then (or if that's too hard to do, top three then)
top three hmm.....
my fair lady
la strada
alien/s

you're getting four not three because alien/s is just too hard to choose one film from so eat my ass

I think I'm pretty balanced in my film going - I'll cry to Fellini's heartbreaking muk and praise it while praising Kung Pow: Enter the Fist as equally deserving a film landmark. On that note, please stop what you are doing and watch Kung Pow because I promise you, you will not regret it. Such love has never been put into a parody. I adore Roger Ebert because he took movies for what they were and didn't try compare the Die Hard franchise to bloody Ingmar Bergman and say 'well, this is horse muk when compared to this'. If a film is muk then it is muk on its own merits and not in comparison to anything else.

What would you say is your favorite TV or cartoon to watch as a kid?
hmm powerpuff girls? My little brother absolutely loves it and ever since I downloaded some seasons for him, it's been fun appreciating just how good it was and that it really was a good show to watch as a child.

also omg the emperor's new school was some good muk when I was like 13 honestly

Outside of PokeCommunity, what are your favorite hobbies? What interests you?
Hobbies implies I have energy. I have no energy. I also have an impossibly short attention span so keeping my focus on something for more than 2 minutes is something I gave up on a long time ago. Interests aaahhhh I'm a rather reserved person and thus I take my joys in things I can do by myself - appreciate some good film, play games, read books, etc. I keep active socially to the point where it can be said I have a life and have a group of jurors affirm that, but I'm quite happy in keeping to myself and doing whatever it is that keeps me satisfied for that day. As long as I am intellectually stimulated and can tell someone all about that stimulation, I'm good.

Do you find that having a short attention span has a hindrance in your everyday life?
I have to pause a movie like every twenty minutes unless I'm playing a game because I'll begin to lose my mind
like
I'll be crying but still be shaking like a horny dog because I've passed my span
