How Shinies Kill Families - Caaethil's Pokémon Experiences

Hello, I'm Caaethil. I'm writing a blog or something. This is about my Pokémon experiences, because gimmepie said so. It was originally going to be my entire history of playing this series, but after 800 or so words I decided that would be boring. So here I am, writing a bunch of shorter stories! Because that is super original and absolutely nobody else is doing it, wink wink nudge nudge. Anyway, I hope you find these stories somewhat interesting.

My first Pokémon,

My first 'mon was Totodile. Technically it was Chimchar, but that didn't really count. I got a Chimchar when I made a new file on my mother's copy of Platinum, which of course I couldn't keep because it was her game and she had a save file already. It was for the best, really, I was a fool back then. Piplup is obviously better. My first game was HeartGold version, in which I chose Totodile, and it was this game I played through to the end. Even Red. I was very proud. Heck, I was jumping up and down when I first beat Lance. Red was intense for me and I felt good when I beat him, with Feraligatr and Alakazam in the 70s (the MVPs of course, my favourites at the time), a Pidgeot in the 40s (an HM slave before I knew what an HM slave was), and some other Pokémon probably in the 60s or something.

... a sad Oshawott,

My dad's friend used to be very into Pokémon. When he came to our house he would bring his DS and we'd battle and trade. It was good trading with him because, before Black and White were released, he had every Pokémon. We thought that was pretty amazing. When Black and White were released, he bought both but mainly played White, so he'd ask me for Pokémon sometimes to complete his Pokédex (I played Black version). In return, of course (or often just for free if we ever asked), he could give us pretty much any Pokémon we wanted, which was great. I liked playing with all the starters.

I still remember when Black and White were first revealed, and I'd talk to him about the news on the new games (which I discovered very randomly. One day I went on Bulbapedia and wow, the final starter forms were there!). I distinctly remember thinking Oshawott looked sad and just downright stupid. I didn't want it. I don't remember my argument against Tepig, he just sucked. Out of the question. No justification required. From day one I wanted Snivy, and to this day he is my favourite Generation 5 starter. He just has so much personality and he kind of reminds me of myself. Not to mention the whole line is awesomely designed.

... an Arceus,

Anyway, back to HeartGold, he lent me his Arceus so I could do the event in the Ruins of Alph. I don't actually think I ever did it, maybe I couldn't find the place. I don't know. But he let me borrow his Arceus and he told me "Don't battle with it."

"Not even once?"
"No."

I was confused and disappointed. I just wanted to wield the power of the Pokémon GOD, and he wouldn't let me do even one teeny weeny wild encounter with his mighty level 100 Arceus. It wasn't like I was going to faint it or anything. He never fully explained to me why this was, but I worked it out myself later on when I learned how to EV train and even to IV breed. At that point, which was much later when he'd already moved away and stopped coming around, it clicked. And that was why we could never beat him in Pokémon battles. But then, that was probably my fault for always insisting he didn't go easy on me and he used his best team.

... a shiny Braviary,

You might be thinking that this is going to be a generic story about me finding a shiny. Nope. This is a generic story about my brother finding a shiny, hah!

My mother had already found a shiny on her copy of Platinum, a Shellos. From then all the way to today I've been skeptical that wasn't just the other forme from the other Shellos she'd seen. My heart sank, though, when my brother found a shiny. A Rufflet. I was there at the time and could confirm it. He trained that Rufflet up into a super cool shiny Braviary. Every Pokémon player in my house had a shiny (allegedly). Except me.

He traded me that Braviary. Not for real, just temporarily. He was restarting White version.

He never got it back.

It wasn't malicious, I swear. His White version cartridge melted (he left it near a radiator and it was knocked over or something). But that was olay, his brother had his precious Braviary anyway! Except... I looked and looked and couldn't find it. I looked in every box of all my games. No use. Of course, I just figured I must have given it back already and it was lost in his game.

But alas, it was not, for in 2015/16, I saw it in my Black version's box, facepalmed in my head, and showed him. He just passingly shrugged it off and told me to give it back later. I still have that Braviary,

... and Victory!

It took me until AlphaSapphire to get a shiny all by myself. Of course, shiny chances are higher this gen, so it wasn't as amazing, but I was pretty happy. Victini must have been smiling down on me, because I found a shiny Electrike, which is an electric blue colour. My brother was asleep. We were staying in a hotel in a theme park at the time and the only person awake was my grandmother, who, as you might imagine, didn't get the big idea when I excitedly showed her how the normal one was green and this one was blue. I just told her it was like winning the lottery and she just smiled and nodded.

In that same run, a couple of weeks later or something like that, I found another. I was on the computer, playing Pokémon rather casually, not really paying attention. The game was still AlphaSapphire and I was still working my way through. I think I was walking through that one volcano, I don't know Hoenn too well. I looked down and had encountered a Numel, not having looked at the screen to see the encounter start.

I could have one-shot it, or I could have run away. As you do when you find yet another boring Pokémon. Shiny Numel aren't very striking, the green on top of the hump becomes a light blue. It looks obvious if you Google it, but when playing I couldn't even tell. I think I even Googled, just to check that shiny Numel had blue on it. I still wasn't sure if it was actually blue though. Maybe I was just crazy. But alas, I wasn't crazy, and was rather happy when I checked my box.

Both shinies evolved from blue to a cool black colour. They stayed on my team through the whole of AlphaSapphire, and I rather enjoyed their company.
