Mood: twenty one pilots is so damn good
With so many video games coming out in the last year, there can only be so much time to play them. And on top of that, our interest in video games and it's components varies erratically from person to person. Thus, it's important that we keep an open mind when it comes video games and people's interests in them. For this Top10 3 entry, I've decided to enlist some clientele in my good pals Klippy and Azazel. As such, we would like to present to you our Top 3 favorite video games that we've played in the past year.

Darkest Dungeon
Think Dark Souls meets turn-based RPG meets seeing your loved ones entrails getting ripped out. Or at least that's how the developer would describe it. Darkest Dungeon is designed to be overwhemingly difficult and against you. You have heroes that you develop, grow their skills, and even learn to appreciate them as characters...only to watch them all slaughtered mercilessly by a big boss. The game is designed to be extremely hard and combined with a torch system while exploring dungeons means you often run dry on supplies fast and wind up exploring dungeons in complete darkness...where monsters love to find you.
Dead State
This game reminds me a lot of Fire Emblem: Awakening. It's similar in style (turns on a battlefield-like map), while also having tons of its own charm. It's an indie game and it shows as things are really clunky and sometimes glitchy, but I've had an amazing amount of fun with this one in 2015. A host of colorful characters and permanent deaths (or zombification) really sets the tone of stress for the game, where you're also managing your shelter and ensuring the survival of your crew. It gets tough and even nightmarishly so, but it's a blast.
Don't Starve Together
I guess this is the Year of Indie Games for me because Don't Starve Together has been a blast. A group of us used to get together to play it daily and we always tried to get further each time, but we've all moved onto other games now. It's so great being plunked into a desolate world with nothing but your own attempts to survive. The game is made even more difficult by weather changes, which hurt or help you in your progress, as well as evil attack dogs, giant bird things, and dozens of other evil things vying to kill you. It doesn't help that your character can get so stressed that they lose their mind, but...it's a price we pay.
Sid Meier's Pirates!
This 2004 remake of Sid Meier's classic Pirate simulation is everything you could possibly want in a Pirate adventure. Treasure, ship combat, one on one sword fights, beautiful (and average looking) women, stolen family members, town plundering, a lost city, and of course, 9 of the most notorious Pirate Captains to ever sail the Spanish Main. What more could you possibly want? The controls take a little getting used to, though you can map your own in the config file. Hours, possibly days, of fun to be had!
Fallout: A Tale of Two Wastelands
What if Fallout 3 and New Vegas were directly connected to each other? A story where the Lone Wanderer travels West in search of a new life. A story where he becomes a Courier, and has the bad luck to get sucked into yet another power struggle. That's exactly what the Tale of Two Wastelands mod aspires to do! If you own F3 and NV with all their DLC, then you can experience this awesome journey through two massive wastelands, all with a single character and all the loot you can lug from one region to the next. Play with reduced EXP, or add Project Nevada to the mix and adjust your level cap beyond 50 to match the larger game!
Cities: Skylines
This is quite possibly the best city building game ever created. Following in SimCity's (RIP) foot steps, Skylines attempts, quite successfully, to expand on the formula set forth by its predecessors. The result is a highly polished simulation with more natural looking city layouts than any game before it. Don't like building a large grid of roads to maximize your space potential? Screw it! Build the curviest most windy city you've ever seen! The game sets you with very few limitations beyond your budget. Want a tougher experience? The creators were nice enough to INCLUDE a whole slew of example mods to demonstrate the games impressive Workshop integration, two of which are an infinite money mod for you free builders out there, and a hardcore mode which pushes you budget to the very limit! I highly recommend this game even if you don't play many building games. It is truly a blast on par with SimCity 2000.
Sunset Overdrive
In today's age of modern day shooters, we get the same ol' same ol': Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Halo have rehashed their formulas from game to game, giving the shooter genre a very monotonous overview to it. However, my perspective of the genre - at least to me - changed the very minute I put in Sunset Overdrive in my Xbox One. This game, in lack of better words, if fucking fun: with an original plot line, witty dialogue, a wide array of ridiculous weapons ranging from the TNTeddy (which shoots explosive teddy bears) to The Dude (based on The Big Lebowski which shoots bowling bowls) to the Captain Ahab (which shoots harpoons), and so much customability for their character, Sunset Overdrive offers a very delightful and refreshing experience that isn't afraid to make fun of itself. One of the best shooters that I've played in a very long time.
Destiny
Destiny was, when first released, a very incomplete game. There were a lot of promises made about the game when it was first announced, and sadly for gamers weren't fulfilled in the actual release. However, Bungie - the company behind the works of the classic Halo games - has been consistent with adding new features to the game over the last year that it's made the game a completely new one to say the least. It's a little bit of a grind, but the game is incredibly satisfyingly fun whether it's fighting the Hive hordes on the Moon, the Fallen on Earth, or the Cabal on Mars. Plus, the Raid component of the game - a game type where it normally takes 6 competent Guardians (the name of your characters) to complete - is absolutely satisfying. In the last year alone I've plugged in over 600 hours into Destiny, and as Bungie has gone on record saying Destiny will become a 10 year franchise, I honestly can't wait to see what the game and it's sequels have in store.
Child of Light
I've been hunkering for an RPG'ish game for a very long time now. I'm only about half way through this game as of myself writing this, but I have absolutely been loving this game. The art in terms of the worlds you visit as well as the character models - I love the way Norah looks - is only as great as the incredibly solemn and tranquil soundtrack that accompanies it. The battle system in the game which involves you stalling your opponents with your light and strategically planning out your moves whether with spells, physical attacks, status ailments, or healing moves, makes the system complex and important to plan out your moves in advance. If the first half is any indication as to what is to come, than this will be a game that will hold a special place in my heart.What do you think of the games we've listed as our favorite games played this year?
