Sorry to disappoint those of you who came here expecting me to rip on the band, but today I'm serving you up with the complete opposite. Actually, all the hate for Nickelback is leaving me with a foul taste in my mouth.
I just cannot understand why this particular group is so hated in popular culture, it seems to me that these days people are just deciding to hate this band simply because of societal pressure. I'm seriously starting to believe there's actually just a trend going on and people are disliking the band because they are told to, rather than because of a valid reason.
I've just listened to their new album, No Fixed Address, and I quite enjoyed it. Sure there are some weaker songs on the album, but overall it's pretty solid and there are some really good tracks too. There have been some complaints from fans about the experimentation with different styles, and I mean fair enough I can't expect people to like everything anyone puts out, but what is really getting me is the people who seem to just blindly hate the band.
The common complaints appear to be
Let's address each of them, shall we?
They Only Sing Love Songs
Umm... nope. Whilst it is true that the majority of their songs do seem to be about love, they have some great tracks about other issues too. Not Leavin' Yet is about Chad Kroeger's dying grandmother, If Everyone Cared is about the selfish state of the world and Side of a Bullet is about the death of a friend.
Besides that, what exactly is wrong with singing songs primarily about one topic? The majority of Halestorm (another band I love) songs are about rough, kinky sex but nobody seems to have a problem. Most mainstream rap artists perform songs about money, fame and bitches but that's totally okay to the wider public.
In all honesty, the vast majority of music out there is about relationships, love or heartbreak. Pretty much every band has at least one song about one of those topics. None of them cop any flack for it though, so why does this band get ripped on for exploring the same topic?
They're too Mainstream
What exactly constitutes "too mainstream"? Either music is popular in the mainstream charts or it isn't. Whilst I am inclined to agree that most music in the mainstream charts is horrible, that's just a coincidence. A song being popular with mainstream audiences doesn't automatically mean the song has poor quality, it just means that it gets downloaded on iTunes a lot.
Besides... if you all hate this group so much, how are they managing any mainstream success?
Behold Pink! An extremely talented and popular mainstream artist who is well known for songs about love and partying. Nobody, and I mean nobody complains about her music - and I think that's how it should be. What I want to know is how this is all fine for her, but not a rock group.
They Experimented
Bands do that. Why? So they can bring their music to a wider audience, so they can share their art with more people and make more money. That's not selling out, that's business. If they became a boy band out of nowhere, that would be selling out.
But forget business, maybe they were just getting freaking bored and wanted to do something different? Actually I feel really sorry for these guys, one group of people hates them for always being the same and another hates them for changing things up.
Nb just sux okay
No, absolutely not. Never use an argument like this. I don't expect you to enjoy this band or any other. It doesn't even matter to me if you say this about an artist I like or despise. If you use this argument for anything you deserve to be branded with a mark the shape of a dunce hat.
If you hate something, you need a reason. Maybe you don't like the genre, or the instrumentation, or the vocals, or the topic or maybe you're just bored. It doesn't matter, the point is YOU CAN'T JUST HATE THE MUSIC FOR NO REASON, there has to be something that bothers you about it. If you are giving that as your reason, you're just hating an artist because you're told to.
I don't care if it's Nickelback, or Pink, or Linkin Park or bloody Justin Bieber, don't hate on an artist because it is trendy to - hate them because you actually have a reason. Even the people in the above groups at least have a reason.
Seriously, it doesn't bother me whether you like Nickelback or not. I actually don't care what music you like or dislike. Just... have an opinion of your own. Don't like or dislike an artist because you feel you're supposed to, don't give the masses that kind of power over you. Like what you like, hate what you hate and let your musical taste of all things be your own.
That's my two cents, feel free to tell me how much you love or hate anything mentioned in this rant in a rant of your own in the comments, or hell, even a nice comment. It's up to you! XD
