So I just got back from a screening of Love, Simon. And I'll admit, there were a couple of moments where I got close to crying and a single moment where it all drew together and I shed a few tears. It was not, however, the movie that I'd been hoping it to be. It didn't feel as grand or as special as it could have been. It feels more like that it was just an attempt at cashing in on something that's been becoming a big topic of discussion. The first 3/4 of the movie is crammed full of mostly meaningless quotes and pop culture references from the last 15 or so years, while only the last fourth of the movie actually focuses on what the movie is supposed to be about. When I first looked at the ticket for the movie, I'd misread it as being only 50 minutes long. And to be honest, I personally would have rather preferred it that way.

I will admit that the beginning of the movie isn't entirely bad, but for the most part I was disinterested for the first 30 or so minutes. There were several times where I thought to myself that I should just get up and buy a ticket for another movie. If I hadn't been there with my girlfriend, I most likely would have, too.

After the first 30 minutes is up, a few things start to happen, but nothing that was exactly memorable. I stood by it, mostly because the theater was packed and my girlfriend would have hated me if I'd just stood up and left, but I stood by it nonetheless. The last 30 minutes of the movie were definitely far greater than the first 30, but the way in which everything was wrapped up and all the conflict was dealt with was just... stupid, for lack of a better word. Simon does some shitty things and everyone hates him for all of a couple of days. The entire school gets behind him for whatever reason and everyone gets to sit together for the big, happy reveal at the end. Everyone who'd been hurt up to that point puts it behind them over a few lines of text, and everyone who'd been hurting others until then simply walked away scott free.

The movie was by no means terrible all in all, but it could have definitely been a certain degree better. The entire beginning of the movie could have been skimmed down significantly, and more effort could have been put into the resolution of everyone's problems and explaining more on why things happened the way that they did because certain parts of the conclusion to the story simply aren't realistic in any world.
