Underrated Threats #1: Exeggutor (BW2 Ubers)

Hello! I'm Aurora. As you probably know, I like playing RU and Ubers. I also like experimenting with Pokemon that most people would shudder at the thought of picking for their team. I've decided that I'm going to start sharing some of these underrated Pokemon so you can begin to appreciate just how deep these metagames are, and I'll be doing this on a regular basis. This blog, I will be covering Exeggutor, a veritable sun sweeper in BW2 Ubers.

The Set
Exeggutor @ Choice Specs
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Grass Knot
- Psyshock
- Ancient Power
- Hidden Power [Fire] / [Ground]

What It Does
Sick of using Growth Venusaur? That garbage needs a turn to set up, packs less immediate power, and has an inferior secondary STAB. I present to you Choice Specs Exeggutor as a good alternative to that lame Pokemon. Dubbed 'the Omastar of sun teams' by somebody in the Ubers room, Choice Specs Exeggutor can rip holes through teams with the appropriate support. Are you thinking of switching your bulky Ho-Oh into Exeggutor? You'll be sorry when Ancient Power 2HKOes easily (and OHKOes after Stealth Rock). Tempted to switch your Palkia in so you can OHKO Exeggutor with Fire Blast? Think again as your Palkia falls to Grass Knot after damage incurred one layer of Spikes and Stealth Rock. Fighting Arceus flees in terror as Psyshock cleanly 2HKOes while Fighting Arceus must rely on good rolls from Ice Beam and Judgement, Genesect and Ferrothorn switch-ins are destroyed by Hidden Power Fire, and all weather setters either fall to or are heavily dented by Grass Knot. You can also run Hidden Power Ground if Heatran bothers you, but this leaves you unable to touch Ferrothorn and Genesect.

Teammates
Groudon is absolutely necessary as a teammate; Exeggutor is complete trash otherwise. Physically defensive Groudon, in particular, reliably sets Stealth Rock for Exeggutor, allowing it to net important 2HKOes and OHKOes that it would otherwise miss out on. It also destroys Heatran, which is extremely threatening to Exeggutor. Dark-types also bother Exeggutor, although it should be noted that none of them want to come in Grass Knot. Exeggutor's weak coverage moves are fair game, however, so Fighting-type Pokemon are appreciated. Fighting Arceus, Choice Scarf Heracross and Choice Scarf Terrakion make great teammates; Choice Scarf Heracross receives a special mention for being able to smash Darkrai with Guts-boosted STAB moves 2/3 of the time when put to sleep thanks to Sleep Talk. As Exeggutor best functions as a revenge killer due to its average bulk and awful defensive typing, which limit switch-in opportunities, hazards annoy it. Spinners such as Forretress are boons for it in this regard.

What Stops It
Exeggutor's defensive typing is complete garbage. This means that it can't really switch in on that much, as most Pokemon will have a coverage move that hits Exeggutor super effectively, leaving you with one Pokemon down; Groudon can hit it with Lava Plume or Fire Punch, Palkia can scorch it with Fire Blast, Ho-Oh can click anything and not really care, Tyranitar (which is outsped by Exeggutor even under sand) nukes it with any Dark-type move... the list goes on. Even when the sun is shining, there are certain things that Exeggutor's fairly decent coverage cannot break through. Heatran and Dialga laugh at everything Exeggutor has and destroys it with Lava Plume, while Giratina-O is almost never 2HKOed by Psyshock and 2HKOes in return with Shadow Sneak. Dark-types, while shakier checks due to the threat of Grass Knot, can come in on most anything else and Pursuit trap or outright obliterate it with their STAB moves. The best way to stop Exeggutor, however, is by changing the weather: while neither Kyogre or Tyranitar want to come in on Grass Knot, once they're in, Exeggutor is pretty much useless. This is exacerbated when your Groudon has fallen, as Exeggutor will then be neutered for the rest of the game if your opponent does not have a Groudon of their own.

I hope you enjoyed my first Underrated Threat! Stay tuned for another Underrated Threat, this time from ORAS RU, in a couple of days time.

I learned a lot from this and look forward to more! I recommend you try the deadly rain sweeper: Carrcosta.

That sounds like a swell idea! Carracosta outclasses both Omastar and Kabutops by virtue of its ability to go mixed, so I'm down for that.
