The Opening Ceremony

As the Olympics draw nearer to a close, I feel like sharing my thoughts on them a little with a sort of "mini-series". The Rio Olympics have been marred by controversy - something I'll talk about in another entry - but there have been plenty of high notes as well.

I think one of those high notes was the opening ceremony. Whilst the supposed theme of doing more with less was very obviously a necessity, not a choice, I think that the opening ceremony for this year was memorable for all the right reasons.

We were treated to a walk through Brazil's history from prehistoric times, to the earliest times of the country, to the colonization by the Portuguese, the atrocities that befell the slaves brought into the country and eventually we were brought to modern Brazil.

I think the most prevalent part of the opening ceremony however, was an important political message. That the world needs to wake up and make some serious changes in how we treat our planet. We're killing the environment and by extension we're killing every living thing - ourselves included. The Brazilians did not pull their punches and made it clear that if we don't do something now, we'll be too late. That's a message that needs to be more widely spread and with the whole world looking at Rio, this was the perfect opportunity to share it. So, despite all the issues with the Olympics this year, I think this was an effort many of us can appreciate and respect.

The ceremony was not without its faults of course, Giselle's catwalk was the most boring TV I have ever experienced and a lot of the musical performances seemed kind of lackluster... or very lackluster. On top of this, Australia's uniforms were just terrible and have brought shame to our otherwise respectable nation.

Overall, I was quite happy with how the Games were opened, what did you guys think?

I honestly think that the opening ceremony was lacking the actual culture that Rio has, like the Carnaval, for example. I do not remember the olympics showing off how Brazil (Rio, especially) celebrates their culture and spirit with the country. It was seriously lacking.

I'm waiting to see how the closing ceremony will turn out, hoping for the better. Will you be watching?

Watching right now and enjoying it quite a bit. The whole thing feels very vibrant and cultured to me, although so did the opening ceremony xD
