Remember that Ice Bucket Challenge back in 2014 where everyone was dumping buckets of cold ice water on one another? Well, that popular Internet trend resulted in something quite fabulous.
Thanks to the money raised by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, scientists and researchers have been able to identify a new gene contributing to the ALS disease, which it's been scientifically named NEK1. This discovery of the NEK1 gene means that researchers and scientists can now conduct and construct a new genetic therapy care which targets this particular gene. Prior to the Ice Bucket Challenge, there was no gene known that was connected to the motor neurodegenerative disease.

Over 80 researchers in 11 different countries contributed and worked on the progression and search for any ALS risk genes in families who have been affected by the disease. However, only 10% of ALS patients have been linked to the gene being inherited through affected family members. While this is the case, researchers strongly believe that this percentage is actually quite higher and believe that this discovery will help in the future goal of curing ALS. Lucie Bruijn, a representative of the ALS Association, stated that "the sophisticated gene analysis that led to this finding was only possible because of the large number of ALS samples available."

As stated, the Ice Bucket Challenge first originated in 2014. The challenge itself involved pouring cold water over themselves and posting videos of it on social media, simultaneously challenging others to take on the challenge. Furthermore, money was donated and collected based on whether or not the challenge was taken, as well as how many people you challenged actually did it. While the challenge itself was criticized by some as being essentially a publicity stunt, the results speak for themselves: more than 17 million people uploaded videos to Facebook, 400 million views were accumulated, and the challenge resulted in raising over $115 million that funded six different research projects.
