The Steps In Recovering From Depression [Daily Bloggity Entry #111]

Considering enough was enough, I decided to take some action against the depression that has been hitting me lately. While some things are just completely out of my control, I've been taking the steps to dwindle the horrible attacks as much as possible, and I'd like to say that I've put myself on the right track now. As such, these are some of the things I've done in the past few days after that depressive moment/entry I posted on here a few days ago:

  • Quit my job at Dunkin Donuts - yes, you did not read that wrong. I finally took the initiative to quit from a job that honestly was killing me mentally. I was having such a difficult time trying to keep myself sane in that environment that I thought it was best to take my leave while I still could. Like I've said in previous entries, I've been working two jobs for the past year while I've been on break from college. It's roughly been about 50-60 hours of work a week, so as you can imagine it has taken quite a toll on me. By putting my energy into solely one job, I'm hoping that it will remove a lot of anxiety that I've been feeling as of late. I'm not too worried about my financial state, as I'd rather be happy and making less money than miserable and getting paid more.
  • Sleeping more - weekends used to be the death of me. I would usually work about 16 hours in a single day, and roughly only get about 3/4 hours of sleep before the cycle continued. Now, thanks to myself quitting my day job, I've successfully been able to get in a healthy 8 hours of sleep to rejuvenate myself. Plus, it feels really nice now that I can essentially get up whenever I want now. That kind of luxury has been something that I've been missing for a very long time now, and I am very happy to have that back.
  • Exercising more - it has been proven that exercise has been a great way to relieve stress, so I've taken it upon myself to do more of it. Not to say that I actually need it health wise - I'm 5 ft 9 in and 150lbs - but more to relieve my body of any toxins that is poisoning it. When I worked at Dunkin Donuts, I used to ride my bike all the way there which was roughly about 4.2 miles. As I've already got a routine down with that, I've also picked up the Insanity Workout which has something that I've been wanting to do all summer but never had the time.
  • Eating better - not going to lie, I haven't been eating that great as of late. From Dunkin Donuts to the fast food at the move drive in (my other job) my nutrition hasn't been the greatest. That being said, I've been eating a lot better! I make myself smoothies - without any sugar - after my Insanity workouts and they keep me going for most of the day. I'm just doing my best right now to keep myself from eating too much junk food, and it seems to be working thus far.
  • Creating more art - if some of you have been avid readers of my blog when I first started, then you know that I have a segment where I produce stipple art. With the strenuous amount of time I did working though, I had very little time to continue my little hobby. That being said, I've got a lot of time on my hands and I've been able to pick that hobby right back up! Stippling has always been a great way for me to just relax and enjoy the moment that I'm in, so I'm very happy that I've been able to do that more.
  • Talked to my mom about the incident - most importantly, I kept my parents in the loop about what was going on mentally for me. I wanted to keep them on the same page so they could understand what was going through my mind and make sure that they were supportive of my decisions. We're going day by day to see if anything comes of these changes, but it's nice to know that my parents are being supportive of my decisions thus far.
What have you guys done to fight depression? Comment below as I'd love to hear what you have to say about this topic!

You definitely will feel better with just one job, especially if you say you aren't too worried about your finances.

As someone that has struggled with depression my entire life, I can tell you that working out and eating healthily has worked wonders for me and I hope it does the same for you. More sleep should help a lot, too.
