As I've gotten back into the swing of things around here on PC I keep running into a certain problem among my circle. It troubles me a bit to be honest.

But it seems to me people keep forgetting something very important that they should know. That is simply to:

Make new friends, But keep the old.

Yet I see people who depart PC as if they've got no one to lose. I see people depart because they don't believe they're worthy, useful or contributing to PC. It saddens me. Mostly because I know how that feels. I've been there. Plenty of people (have/had) some rather unfortunate opinions of me simply because of my personality. Some couldn't accept who I was growing into. Some just didn't like me for their own personal reasons. I have come to accept that. It's definitely not a fun lesson to learn the hard way though.

They let themselves down by letting someone else's poor opinion of them matter more than it should, and they decide they've failed if they can't eventually please someone or everyone. In doing so they forget the ones who are right there by their side, who enjoy their company and generally find them to be respectable people. These are the ones who don't "Keep the old" friends.

I also see people who forget the value of new friends. Those who decide to hare off in chase after their friends to other places, particularly if that friend has a habit of leaving because they don't feel useful. These are the ones who forgot to "Make new friends." probably because they think they can't.

Now I'm aware that real life reasons can also factor hugely in leaving decisions, and I try to keep that in mind when addressing someone who is "leaving" either temporarily or permanently. Having a real life reason influence your decision is pretty much something I don't argue with. There's nothing wrong with growing out of PC, many do and find themselves unable to come because they have a life to live. The absence I just returned from was influenced largely by such a situation. Life pulled and I answered, and had to mature in the process.

I think it's better to make new friends, keep your old ones and toss the "Silver and Gold" ideals to the wind. All your friends should be equally treasured as much as you can.

I encourage everyone to try to find, and be with, people who like and respect you right here. There are many people on PC, and oftentimes the best friends you can make are quite a bit closer than you think.

Even I make the mistake of overlooking a potentially awesome friend at times. We all do. Don't forget about the friends you have either, just because you have more friends over there.

Believe me, I've made all the mistakes I've mentioned above, and I still do occasionally make them! But I hope that this entry helps someone to identify that mistake if they do make it so they can learn.

Thought, I would like to voice my opinion that sometimes people just grow apart. Sometimes you lose old friends or grow distant from them for reasons that can't really be controlled. Then you grow closer to new friends, but it doesn't mean that you dislike your old friends, you just sorta.. don't know what to say to them anymore.

That's not the situation I'm really referring to though, since those simply can't be helped. I'm referring to one where someone just jumps up and leaves just because. Though I think it couldn't hurt to make an effort to rekindle things if you feel like that's the case with someone. If you've made an honest effort and failed, then it isn't within your control.

I simply want to motivate people to make the effort if they can, rather than just vanishing mysteriously and leaving people to chase after them.
