October 23rd, 2012 12:22 AMSectorSo the Nationwide Series is perhaps, the next highest level behind the Cup. Nationwide is suppose to be a learning curve, the step before proving if you can hang with the big boys, the men. Lately Nationwide has been dominated by the likes of Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch & Brad Keselowski & prior to that, Kevin Harvick. I don't know why, but the series went as long as Cup, but the record cheats starts at 1982 for some reason. No one really knows why, the old timers won't even answer me about it x)
But Bobby Labonte, Joe Nemechek, Dale Earnhardt Jr, jeff Breen< Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle, Brian Vickers, Martin Truex Jr, Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski & Ricky Stenhouse Jr are the drivers today you know/heard of, that has won past Nationwide Championships. Kyle Busch leads the series with the most wins(51). Most laps led as well (10,817). Kyle Busch dominated the Nationwide Series, winning 10 races in 2008, 9 races & a championship in 2009, 13 races in 2010, & 8 last year tying with Carl Edwards' 8. He was in the 20 car in 2008, but the more recent years he was in the 18 car for each races he was in. Mark Martin is 2nd all time with wins, 49. Just one short of 50. Carl Edwards & Kevin Harvick both are tied & have 38 wins in 3rd all time. Right now, Kyle Busch either has to win a race to tie Mark Martin for 10 straight years of winning a race. If he doesn't, he doesn't tie. That's the price he's paying for racing his own team in the 54 car this year & having Joey Logano dominate in the 18 car, which you are loving this year as it seems lol. However, Carl Edwards has won 8 straight years & won this year already..so if he can win one next year & the following year, Carl can get that record too if he wanted to! Get him back in the 60 car! I want him to win 50 races in the Nationwide Series too! lol
Truck Series, Ron Hornaday has 52 wins, only driver to win more than 30 races. Only driver to win 4 in a row in the Truck Series, which has had done so in 2009 (He actually won 5 in a row though lol). He's the Truck King, won the championship 4 times! He's actually 400+ laps shy of reaching 10,000 laps led. I want him to do it but..the team he used to be with to dominate in no longer exists (Kevin Harvick Inc) so the new team he's with stinks right now. Only two other Truck Champions won multiple titles. Todd Bodine(2006 & 2010) & Jack Sprague(3 Time Champion). Jack Sqrague actually won the championships for Rick Hendrick. Hendrick Motorsports & Kevin Harvick Inc actually has the most championships in the Truck series, 3 apiece! ;) Not to mention, never before in the Truck series has there been a back-to-back championship! This series has only been living since 1995 though. Not very old. -
October 23rd, 2012 12:06 AMSectorOkay..So Owners are a major part of this sport. As you can see right now, Roger Penske has been around this sport for a long time. The team Brad Keselowski is racing for. Roger has never won a Cup Championship, but would kill for one. So if Brad pulls this off the next 4 races, it'll be huge for him. Not to mention Paul Wolfe is an excellent crew chief. I may really dislike Brad, but if Brad wins, I'll be glad for those two but not be happy that Brad won it x) Stewart Haas racing was newly formed back in 2009 back when Tony left the 20 car & Joe Gibbs Racing. Tony hates Toyota, he's all for GM (Chevrolet, Pontiac, etc). When Tony won the championship last year, it was the first time that an owner-driver won the championship since Alan Kulwicki back in 1992. Long time.
Okay, so instead of going into each of the past owners like the crew chiefs, I'll just point out the current & most recognized ones. Petty Enterprises won 10 championship which had been around from 1949 to 2008! LONG time! It was shut down but a new team came in, Richard Petty Motorsports. Completely different organization, but Richard Petty is only used as a figure there. But Petty Enterprises has team records that will be held for some time, but not for long. You'll read why in a bit! They have the most wins (268) top 5's (888) & laps led (60,550) as a team. Lee Petty's 3 Championship & Richard Petty's 7 Championships make up for the 10 titles. Junior Johnson won 6 championships following that, Darrell Waltrip & Cale Yaborough each 3 apiece. Yes, Junior Johnson is the same person that won 50 races as a racer himself. But as an owner, he's accomplished 132 wins by his drivers.
Richard Childress Racing, the team Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton & Paul Menard races for in Cup. Elliott Sadler & the Dillon Brothers from Nationwide/Truck series. Richard Childress won 6 championships also, but only with Dale Earnhardt. Remember when Dale won those 6 from 1986 to 1994? Yep, been a long time since Richard Childress Racing won one. Not to mention RCR won its 100th race last year @ Talladega with Clint Bowyer. The last time they won. IN case you haven't noticed, he's all focused on the Dillon brothers in the other series. He's completely focused on them. Because they're his grandsons & is the reason why Elliott Sadler is leaving the team after this year. When Dale Jarrett won the championship in 1999, he won with Robert Yates Racing. It was a good organization, great mechanics as a team though. That's the team Elliott Sadler raced in Cup & won 3 of his 4 races in. But they don't exist anymore, much like Petty Enterprises & Junior Johnson's teams. Joe Gibbs Racing won its 100th race back in New Hampshire when Denny Hamlin won. 3 Time Owner's Championship, one with Bobby Labonte, 2 with Tony's first two Championship. Bobby drove the 18 car by the way. Denny Hamlin's dream is to actually win a championship for Joe Gibbs, so that's why it'll be a big win if Denny can pull it off one of these years.
Jack Roush, Roush Fenway Racing, I do not like. But he's only a two time Owner's Championship, Matt Kenseth & Kurt Busch in 2003/2004. As you can tell, after Matt Kenseth leaves to go to Joe Gibbs next year, Jack will have already lost his two championship drivers that made his team what it is. Mark Martin drove for him from the start in 1988 till 2006 before he left. So big history there. Jack Roush has 130 wins as an owner. Then finally, I can talk about my favorite organization ;)
Hendrick Motorsports. Mr. Rick Hendrick. YES! He's tied with Petty Enterprises for most championships with 10! Jeff Gordon's 4 titles, Jimmie Johnson's 5 titles & Terry Labonte's 1996 title. So another huge win if Jimmie can pull it off. (As you can see, any of the top 3 drivers winning this chase would be HUGE right now haha, Brad vs Jimmie vs Denny). Rick Hendrick is actually going for the records actually. He's only @ 206 wins right now, about 80 more wins to go. But 852 top 5's isn't that far behind Petty Enterprises' 888. Would love for HMS to reach 1,000 though. HMS has 56896 laps led, getting there. I'll say they'll have that laps led record in by 2015! They do have the records of most winnings ($284,113,647), lead lap finishes(1725), laps completed(886,495) top 10's(1403) & poles(187) though!
So you see why HMS is my favorite team, despite having Jeff Gordon racing there all his life & has a lifetime contract there ;)
Also, some things I want to mention about Jeff. In a single season, Jeff Gordon is tied with David Pearson for most pole awards at 6. (AKA, Most Poles in a single season) Mark Martin is going for his 5th right now unless Kasey Kahne can knock him off. If you are tied for the pole, the tiebreaker is most 2nd place starts, then a lower car #. (I find that 3rd tiebreaker stupid, but it happened with Jamie McMurray beating Kasey Kahne back in 2010, think it should be better "Average Start"). Jeff has the most wins in a single season 6 times, tied with Darrell Waltrip in Modern Era. (Richard Petty has the record for all time though). Dale Earnhardt has the most top 10 finishes in a single season in NASCAR history, @ 9. Jeff Gordon is 2nd, @ 7. Jeff Gordon is tied with Dale Earnhardt @ 6 in NASCAR history as well. Not to mention, Jeff is top 5 in most top 5's(4th), Wins(3rd), Poles(3rd). But he's 6th in Top 10s(36 behind Mark Martin for 5th) & Laps Led(Which he needs to lead 90 more laps to pass Darrell Waltrip, which I hope he does @ Martinsville. He's usually very strong there, he did led 329 laps back in April). Which the 329 laps led was the most laps in a single race led this year so far ;) Hope no one beats that this weekend lol. So out of all the drivers today..no one has led more than 400 laps in a single race besides three. Jeff Gordon(431 Laps Led @ Martinsville), Kyle Busch(415 Laps Led @ Bristol, Carl Edwards won that race) & Matt Kenseth(415 Laps Led @ Bristol). So as you can see, Jeff Gordon has accomplished more in NASCAR than people actually think he had x)
Oh yeah, he's also won a pole for 20 consecutive seasons, tied for longest with David Pearson. So winning a pole next year means he has yet, another record to hold! he's the Restrictor Plate King, passed Dale Earnhardt who had 11. Jeff now has 12. Restrictor Plate meaning, Talladega & Daytona. Though before the 80's, they didn't have Restrictor Plate (It decreases the speed, lessen the chance of bad, bad wrecks that were worst than the one you saw with Tony flipping.) Road Course King also. Most with 9, ever in NASCAR history. He's a king @ Sonoma/Infineon especially. He's the only driver to win 6 straight Road Course wins in NASCAR history, has the next best was 3 in a row. He's won inaugural tracks 3 times as well: Kansas, Fontana & Indianapolis. Go Jeff Gordon! -
October 22nd, 2012 11:30 PMSectorOkay Owner & crew chief time! Listing past crew chiefs won't be necessary, since you won't even remember or know who they are x) So I'm going to list the ones that are active today or on the booth.
For one, the most championship by a crew chief is Dale Inman, 7 with Richard Petty & 1 with Terry Labonte's first Cup. Chad Knaus has the 2nd most, with 5. Remember him? (Jimmie Johnson!) Then there's Jeff Hammond, who has two Cup Championship with Darrell Waltrip. You'll see them if you haven't watched a race on Fox yet or check the races out on youtube. (Fox broadcasts the races from Daytona 500 to Dover or so). Andy Petree won the last 2 championships with Dale Earnhardt, Ray Evernham(Best. Crew Chief. Ever) was Jeff Gordon's crew chief for his first three championships. He's the guy on the booth with Rusty Wallace, Brad Daughtery & Nicole Brisoce.
Todd Parrott still crew chief to this day, won with Dale Jarrett. Greg Zipadelli is the competition manager at Stewart-Haas Racing but crew chief Danica Patrick when she's in the 10 car for the Cup races. Greg won with Tony in 2002 & 2005, but stayed behind for Joey Logano. He left Joey Logano last year to recur the roles I just said. Because Joey wasn't a winner x) Jimmy Fennig is Matt Kenseth's crew chief right now, won with Kurt Busch. Robbie Reiser does something at a higher level @ Roush Fenway Racing. I don't remember, but he left after 2008, was Matt Kenseth's crew chief when he won though. Then Darian Grubb who is now Denny Hamlin's crew chief, won with Tony last year. So there you go for the crew chiefs. Whew lol. -
October 22nd, 2012 11:22 PMSectorOkay, so Joe Weatherly is a 2 time champion also, back to back from '62 to '63. Wanted to get him in before I move on to the owners, so I just mentioned only all the drivers to win the Cup Championship somewhere in the previous two posts lol. Just gotta read :P
Okay some things I should mention here. Tony Stewart won the 2002 championship, but Sterlin Merlin had a strong year that year and was looking very strong. But a wreck injured him & took him out of contention for a championship. Which opened the door for Tony to win his first championship in 2002. Matt Kenseth & Kurt Busch won the following two, but here's the catch. All three won in their 4th full time season. Just wow. Tony Stewart won 2005. It was in fact, a dominate summer by Tony Stewart. Leading 151 laps of 160 at the 4th of July Daytona race?? Wowzer. It was deja vu but as a different champion than earlier that season when Jeff Gordon dominated Talladega, leading 139 of 188 laps in the Yoda/Pepsi car! Both of those races, both drivers literally didn't need the bump draft assistance to move forward, that's why they were great in the old cars. The best. The COT came for 16 races in 2007 & following that Jeff Gordon has never been at his best since then. Its a shame. Hopefully the new cars next year he gets back to his fiery self. :P haha. I just want him to reach 90 wins & doubt it but, would love to see him reach 100 wins & pass David Pearson for 2nd all time.
Anyway, Tony Stewart won last year's championship tying Carl Edwards, who had a very, very strong year last year. I really want Carl Edwards to win a Cup. Class act. My favorite driver outside of the Hendrick Motorsports stable. Carl had the most points in 2008 & last year, so without the chase he would be a 2 time champion. His first full time season, in 2005, he tied Greg Biffle for 2nd (Credited for 3rd as he had fewer wins) so he literally have 3 runner-up finishes just about so far. Looking to be the next Mark Martin if he keeps this up. He's had a horrible year this year though, not performing well at all. Like I said, Jimmie won 5 times from 2006 to 2010. It was Jimmie vs Matt Kenseth in 2006, Jimmie vs Jeff Gordon in 2007(The best year anyone has ever seen by Jeff Gordon, vanished because of Jimmie's chase performance), 2008 was Jimmie vs Carl, 2009 was Jimmie vs Mark Martin, 2010 was Denny vs Jimmie while last year was Carl vs Tony. 2005 was straight up Tony. 2004 was Kurt Busch holding off the powerhouse of Jimmie & Jeff. 2004 would had be Jeff's year also without the chase. That's 6 championships D:
Anyway, Jeff Gordon won his champions before he hit age 30. 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001. He was 29 in 2001. He was the fastest driver to reach 50 wins in NASCAR history. He's tied Richard Petty for the most wins (13) in a single season in the modern era (Which began in 1972, meaning it was when NASCAR was first televised). 13 wins in 1998, but he won 10 races the previous two years, 7 before that & 7 after his 1998 season. (If you didn't get it, that's 47 wins in 5 years!) Dale Earnhardt could was nicknamed the intimidator. Meaning? He'll wreck you if you don't get out of your way. That's what NASCAR used to be, actually. But Jeff Gordon was the person who Dale couldn't intimidate, thus creating a huge rivalry among the fans. (That rivalry died now since Dale Jr hasn't really live up to expectations & Jeff..well..not winning much anymore).
As for NASCAR's Most Popular Driver. Bill Elliott has the most. But since 2003, Dale Earnhardt Jr has won the Most Popular Driver award. He's only got 19 Cup wins, & no Cup Championship. So...when I said Jeff Gordon isn't overrated, I meant it. Dale Earnhardt Jr is the guy who is. But Jr Nation, is the fan base the fans created, will literally murder you if you say one neutral thing about him. (Meaning, you have to be on the good side of the Jr Nation to be their friends, one doubt will cause dilemma lol). Remember that Nick guy on NASCAR.com? Exactly, don't piss them off haha. -
October 22nd, 2012 11:06 PMSectorSo another set of champions. Like I said before, a Cup Championship puts you on the list of the great driver & your name will forever be remembered. But the team behind it are just as worthy as the driver, but the drivers are popular since..well they're racing in the car lol. Much like how the actors are popular on screen but the directors/producers aren't as popular. No difference there.
So I'm going to share the drivers who won only one championship. Red Byron won the inaugural championship way back in 1949, Bill Rexford followed in 1950. Rex White in 1960, Bobby Isaac in 1970, Benny Parsons in 1973, Bobby Allison in 1983(He's also the one who has 84 wins tied with Darrell Waltrip, but only one championship). Then we got Bill Elliott/Rusty Wallace back to back in '88 & '89 with Alan Kulwicki in 1992 (He died following year in 1993, after 3rd race, & an Allison died that year too so two racers were lost, first of two most saddest years in NASCAR history) From 1986 to 1991, Dale Earnhardt won a span of 6 championships, 3 of them back to back. He won his first in 1980, of course. In his 2nd full time season! One of two drivers to ever win a Cup before his 4th full year. (Jeff Gordon the other, 3rd year). Terry Labonte has the longest years between two championships, he won one in 1984 for Billy Hagan, but then won his 2nd in 1996 during the years Jeff Gordon dominated. But the catch? Terry Labonte was Jeff Gordon's teammate (Yep, Hendrick Motorsports!).
Between Jeff Gordon's 3rd & 4th championship seasons, Dale Jarrett won the 1999 championship while Terry's brother, Bobby Labonte, won the 2000 championship. You see Dale Jarrett on screen too. The Labontes are the only brothers to have won a championship. They may have company soon in that category however. Kurt Busch has a 2004 championship, the inaugural chase (& the only driver not named Jimmie or Tony to win a Chase either). Matt Kenseth won 2003, like I mentioned in the last post. But he only won 1 race that year, the 3rd of 36 race. The rest of the races he didn't even try to win, he just ran 6-10th most of the year while everyone else had problems. So as you see it, Matt's basically the reason the chase exists today. When I said the next brothers to win a championship? Well Kyle Busch will, no doubt, win one before he retires. He's got so much talent, but when he ease down on his attitude, which he has ease down a bit this year on, he can do it. Its only a matter of time of when he'll get his act together. Then all the hype about the Dillons, Austin & Ty Dillon. But to be honest, I don't ever see them winning one. Win a lot of races yes, but championship, no. They're only Nationwide/Truck caliber in my opinion. -
October 22nd, 2012 10:50 PMSectorMatt Kenseth's a champion, ya know? Mark Martin was a co-owner champion with him too. Dale Earnhardt is a 7 time champion, tied with Richard Petty for most. Jimmie Johnson won 5 in a row from 2006 to 2010 passing Jeff Gordon for 3rd all time, the only 4 drivers to win 4+ champions. Tony Stewart last year put himself on the list of the greatest of all time whom won 3+ championship as he won his third, tying Carl Edwards, ugh. Lee Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Cale Yarborough & David Pearson are the other 3 time champions. David Pearson (105) & Richard Petty (200) are the only drivers to win 100+ Cup wins. Jeff Gordon is next best in 3rd all time, 86 career wins while Bobby Allison & Darrell Waltrip has 84 wins each. Cale Yarborough follows with 83 as Dale Earnhardt stopped at 76.
Reaching 50 wins is a huge accomplishment also, puts you up there with all the greatest drivers ever to wheel a racecar, not to mention winning 50 times is a lot. Jimmie Johnson has 58, Rusty Wallace, 1989 champion (The same guy always talking on the booth) has 55 wins, Lee Petty 54, Junior Johnson (Only guy who's got no championship as a driver, but has 6 as an owner, thanks to Cale & Darrell who won 3 each). Ned Jarrett also has 50 wins & is a 2 time champion. Tony Stewart will be up there, he's got 47 right now, so it won't be long now. Either next year or the year after he'll get there.
The guys who were just short, 40+ also have been reached by other amazing drivers. Herb Thomas, 2 time champion, 48 wins. Buck Baker, 2 time champion at 46 wins. Bill Elliott, 44 wins & a 1988 champion. Tim Flock, 40 wins & a 2 time champion. Then there's Mark Martin, who has 40 career wins but like Junior Johnson, no championship. One year he came close, lost by the amount of points he lost due toa penalty to Dale Earnhardt & was very, very close. Most runner-up in point standings, 6 times. Imagine that. But thankfully he's got a 2003 owner championship with Jack Roush when Matt Kenseth won it. He's not entirely Cup less, but everyone says he's the best without a champion in NASCAR history, but no one looks at the owners at all, so they aren't right exactly lol. Just like how Jeff Gordon won 5 owner's championship with Rick Hendrick when Jimmie won all those, Jeff owns Jimmie's car. :)
But however, those who has the Cup, are definitely the best. Which is what Brad Keselowski & Denny Hamlin have been TRYING to do, put their names on there with the rest. x) -
