June 16th, 2014 11:19 PMicomeanon6So all the good writers are doing MLP now, huh. How can we get them to write about Digimon instead? I'd never heard of DragonLance, and as soon as I noticed "more than 190 novels" on the wikipedia page I had to close the tab just in case. Don't want to have to put my free time on life support.
The Kaiser's defeat is the one part of 02 I can still watch and have it affect me. Grr, now you've got me all interested again. Can I know what the two first words of the fic are to tide me over?
I totally forgot about the NBA finals, lol. It's all baseball with me and my family this time of year. -
June 16th, 2014 7:19 PMAstinusIt's great to hear that you have some more free time to visit PC! The past couple of weeks, I missed having you around, especially since you're the only person I can talk to about Digimon. At least you had time to write your story, and I'm looking forward to reading more of your story. I just have to go back and refresh my memory of what happened.
I had finished reading my entire personal collection of DragonLance books, and read the last one in May. After that, I went through the TV Tropes recommended list of Digimon fanfiction and read those that sounded like something I'd enjoy reading. Most of them were average (and way too much Takari, which I don't like at all) and there really wasn't anything spectacular from that page. There's only one I could recommend, but with a warning that the first thirty chapters of the fic aren't that great.
Actually, I've dipped my toes into another fandom. It sounds silly, but I checked out a few fanfic recs for the My Little Pony fandom. All but one of the fics I read are amazing. There's only one I haven't started reading yet, but it's a MLP/Ender's Game crossover, and it looks really interesting.
For my own writing, as I said in the Random Writing Nonsense thread, I discontinued three fics I was trying to work on. They were Pokemon fics, and no real loss. But now I have more time to devote to my Zero-Two rewrite. I'm on chapter seven out of twelve for the first arc of the series (that covers up to the Kaiser's defeat), and things are going well. Though I did just go back and rewrote the end of chapter two, so it might be a while.
Other than that, everything has been the usual for me. Nothing exciting going on, except for the one-person celebration I had when the Spurs won the NBA Finals. -
June 15th, 2014 11:07 PMicomeanon6Hiya. So it's my last summer as a college student, my job schedule is flexible, and I want to be active again for as long as possible. Not only that, for the first time ever I have a buffer. Chapters 6 and 7 are both written, so expect a resolution for that cliffhanger in short order!
Anyway, how's it going with you? -
November 6th, 2013 8:45 PMAstinusI agree that the story was very skeletal. After spending a few days thinking it over and listening to the movie's soundtrack, I've determined that my least favorite thing about the movie itself was that it pretty much skipped over Dragon Army. Dragon Army is my favorite part of Ender's Game, and was the one part that I was most looking forward to in the movie. Obviously, I was really disappointed that they only got one quick game in the movie and everything else was essentially brushed over.
And it did annoy me that for that one shown game for Dragon, Graff allowed Petra to transfer into Dragon so that Ender wasn't short a soldier. Which struck me as odd because I thought Graff wanted Ender to not figure he'd get help? Having him be short a soldier would be more of a test to see how well he'd do strategically rather than giving him help from an adult.
Speaking of Petra, while I do enjoy that her character was given more time, a few of the scenes she was in should have been done with Alai or Bean or even Dink. (Someone on an OSC fanforum asked why Dink was in the jeesh in the movie. They understood why in the books, but felt that Dink wasn't given enough development in the movie to show why Ender could trust him.) Though Petra was given more screen time in an effort to bring in the young female audience, which I can believe. (Seriously. Some of her scenes reminded me a little too much of self-insert fanfiction. Given the fans that Asa Butterfield has, I'm not surprised that I could walk away with that interpretation.)
If you'd still like to read my first impressions, I have them posted here.
I like the ending message as well. That really is a good way for Ender's character to go. Being forced into an "innocent xenocide" is an interesting thing to think about.
Also, I'm going to be going to see the movie again later this week. I'll let you know if any thoughts of mine do indeed change on a second viewing. -
November 3rd, 2013 3:40 PMicomeanon6I definitely want to read impressions; impress away.
My main complaint is that it felt kind of skeletal--everything seemed so underdeveloped, especially Dragon Army. And of course, Bean and Peter got shafted. Thought the emphasis on the morality of using overwhelming force to guarantee no future attacks was a good decision, and it gave a good focus for Ender's character. -
November 2nd, 2013 10:42 AMAstinusI've only seen it once, last night at the last showing at my local theater. I'm still kind of "meh" about it. Don't know if you want to read my long first impressions on it. Still hoping to see it again though.
I haven't played the Wonderswan games yet. I'm trying to get through Y still, but I just haven't had the interest in playing it. Nothing against the game though! I love it, and all the extra features that they've added or changed are great. I just haven't had the interest in playing through it. I'm probably going to sit down this Sunday and just play through the game. -
November 2nd, 2013 6:19 AMicomeanon6Oh wow, this was here in August. :/
So, Ender's Game. I was "meh" coming out of the theater, but it's grown on me in the day since. Though I'd guess you've seen it twice by now, I'll wait for confirmation before discussing specifics.
How were the Wonderswan games? And just what is Ryo's deal? Do the games explain why he ends up in Tamers?
Also, Pokemon Y is GREAT. Pleasantly surprised and loving it so far. I've been using all the extra experience points to finally have a larger team. -
August 6th, 2013 3:54 PMAstinusOh, haha. You signed on. I wasn't expecting you to return, and wondered if you would come back to a lot of notifications from me constantly sending you VMs.
The final trailer for the Ender's Game movie was released, and it's still stuck in the same "let's have massive explosions" rut. The trailer showed very little of anything but action, focusing way more on the final battle than on anything else.
Fortunately, I have heard news that there more character interaction than what the trailers show, and that the friendship between Ender and Petra is more explored. Also, apparently Bernard gets redemption and goes to Command School?
On a Digimon note, I will soon be playing the Wonderswan games that were never released in America! This is all due to that wonderful 02 rewrite and the great question of "What about Ryo?" -
July 18th, 2013 7:28 PMicomeanon6Thanks!
...Just a heads up though, it wouldn't have placed any other year, especially not with its ending--I ran out of time. :P I didn't want to point this out in the thread, but I was the only vet in the bunch. Is there any way of saying that without sounding like you're trying to slight the other entrants? Sorry to be a downer, I'm just kicking myself cause I think I could have written a better story. :( Really want to revise it, now... -
July 18th, 2013 6:54 PMAstinusCongratulations on winning the SWC! I'm gonna read your story tomorrow when my night is less crazy!
-
July 16th, 2013 7:53 PMAstinusFor those who don't know, Asty and I are in an unofficial contest to see who can keep the other waiting for their Digimon stories longest. No victor is in sight, but if I end up winning I may be disqualified for writing too few total words--unfair advantage.I finished the first chapter! :D
But I have to go back and rewrite the ending because I quickly worked through it. I haven't done any writing for over a week now, and I just wanted to get somewhat back in the groove. I only wrote nearly 1200 words today. -
July 6th, 2013 8:12 PMAstinusI was thinking about your VM and realized that we never posted a story for the same event. Whether for SWCs or prompt events or anything, we've never battled against one another.
Some day, we need to just do our own battle!
Haha, I've only written two-thirds of the first chapter. That's a lot of first chapter!
Good luck to you in the SWC! You know I'm looking forward to reading your story. :) -
July 6th, 2013 8:01 AMicomeanon6Too bad. :( One of these years we shall meet on the field of battle. *shakes fist*
That's a good-sized chunk-o-words. Keep at it! -
July 5th, 2013 6:06 PMAstinusAw, I wish I could, but this weekend is really busy for me. That's one of the reasons why I'm not running the SWC. I'm going to be in work all weekend, and by the time I get home on Sunday afternoon from work, I crash. So I could write something, it'll just be not good.
Maybe next year.
Besides, I wrote 10,000 words of this 02 rewrite. I'm happy concentrating on that. -
July 5th, 2013 1:58 PMicomeanon6This is me nagging you to write something for the SWC.
You should write something for the SWC.
This has been me nagging you to write something for the SWC.
