I had that problem all the time for OL and I still have it for the book I'm writing now. For OL, I actually had no specific plot in mind when I started. It was around halfway finished when I got an idea of how it would end. I think this shows, too. There were several times in the story where items or characters were described in detail because I planned to use them later on. But then something changed, and the item or character never came up again. If I were to write a second draft, I would cut out those gaps so the story would flow more smoothly.

For the book I'm writing now, I thought about the plot for a few months, and then wrote down a rough synopsis. The beginning and end were fairly clear-cut, but the middle was a bit fuzzy. After obsessing over it, I just decided to start writing. I figured that it would look a little like OL in the sense that there would be some loose ends. But I could clean those up in a second draft of the book.

So that's basically how I get through it. I give myself a rough plan to stick to, but if I veer off course from time to time, I don't let it eat at me too much. I know that when the words are on paper rather than bouncing around in my head, I'll be able to refine them later on. I guess the main thing is to write, even if it doesn't always turn out how you want it to.

The Kindle is nice to read one once you get use to it. I'm still in the process of getting use to it though (almost there). I finished OL yesterday afternoon, now I have time to do other things... like work on my story which I tired to do last night, but due to work injury I was wearing a wrist brace and typing was slow and painful. I got 220 words before I gave up.

I think I may have found a decent opening. The plot is ever changing currently. I've been thinking about this story since spring of 2008, and everything I start thinking about it again something in the plot changes. Did you have this problem? If so how did you get through it.

The thing I like about ff.net is the ability to refine searches, I can search for stories with certain Pokemon in them, with a certain about of words (eg 100K+) etc. I figured if the author has posted at least 50,000 words then the story has a good chance of being at least decent.

Yeah, it always seems to a battle choosing what to work on. Sometimes I wish I had considered that before I started so many projects. Then it might not be such a mess right now, haha.

I guess I haven't gotten into the Kindle thing yet. When I have a story I'm reading or editing from a computer, I usually print it out and carry it with me. I know it would be a whole lot easier space-wise to have something like a Kindle, but I'm too attached to the actual paper for some reason.

And I agree. It's hard to find good fan fiction. I usually stumble across it while browsing forums. I've tried fanfiction.net a bit, but it feels difficult to weed through all of the stories. I'll have to try the ones you posted after I get some spare time.

Well I finally finished that class... didn't do nearly as good as I wanted. I passed with a C, and that is the lowest grade I have ever received at College. While I'm glad to be done with that appalling class, I wish I had done better. It is my fault for falling behind, but the last lab was ridiculous. :/

Oh well, can't do anything about it now. I'm planning on Catching up on OL and any other fictions that I follow that are updated between now and when ever that occurs. Once I catch up I plan on re-writing my fiction. I still need to come up with an opening without it being too cheesy. I want to jump right into the plot, it’s a little on the long side so the quicker I get to it the better. However I don't want it to seem rushed either. Uh the decisions....

The Kindle is awesome. I've already found my next textbook and started reading on it a few minutes a day just so I have chapter one (at least) done before the first day of class. The Kindle is much more portable than a text book, it’s also a lot easier to hold than a text book too. I can easily slip that into my lunch box and take it to work and use my break / lunch time more productively.

I too like txteclipse's story, too bad it’s only sitting on chapter 24. One of the hardest things to do as a reader of fan fiction is separating a good story from the demented delusions of some horny teen, or the fantasies of some twelve year old who has never heard of grammar before in his /her life. For that reason, and to make sure the story is actually going to go somewhere I tend not to start reading a story until it’s been around for several months and received good reviews. I use reading fan fiction as an entertainment; I don't want to be bored while trying to entertain myself.

My first chapters where small too, I'm not sure how long the last chapter I posted was. It was decent in length though. I'm not sure if I'm going to post my new story on this site or not. I know I am going to post it on fanfiction.net though. Probably get more views there.

Well now that I've rambled on a little bit more than I should have on one of my pet peeves, I guess I'll leave you with some links to stories that are good, done/almost done, and the author still posts. Neither one of these stories include Latias or Latios, but they are still good reads. 460 words of my 1000 word quota are now done.

    Spoiler:

Pedestal - Average Journey fic, kind of bloody, the protagonist has the worst luck ever. Last chapter has been posted, just waiting on epilogue to be posted. *NOTE this story is over 500,000 words long, it will take a while to read. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4871317/1/Pedestal

The Language of Life (author's summary because I can't think of one) Based primarily in the Johto region, The Language of Life follows the journey of eighteen-year-old Eve Addamson, a girl with the unique ability to talk to pokémon. Along with Basil, the pichu she has been friends with for years, she will learn more than she ever wanted to know about the politics, legends, and religions of her world. But as she becomes more and more involved in the workings of her region, she finds that her safety is quickly disappearing. Though she will undoubtedly gain many allies - both pokémon and human - throughout her journey, will it be enough to protect from the fate that history would give her? - http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6211115/1/The_Language_of_Life

Stir of the Thunderstorm - The first fan fiction I ever read. Really got me hooked into fan fiction. Set in medieval times. Can be found on PokeCommunity, but I like reading on FF.net so http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1999302/1/Stir_of_The_Thunderstorm

I sometimes have trouble with the 1,000 words, too. If I have homework or something to do I usually cut it down a bit. It's more of a guideline thing for me rather than a rule. Exercise for me is usually taking a thirty-minute walk to the other side of campus and back, haven't really done the gym thing, haha.

And yeah, lab preparation can be annoying. I'm thankful that the prelab work for physics this quarter is actually a print-out deal where you write out the calculations and responses. In chemistry last year it was all done online, and it graded you as you entered in your work. It was picky, too. Often you'd enter in something like "1.56 mol" for an answer and the program would come back with "WRONG. 1.567 mol," and you'd want to punch the computer. But I digress. Like you said, you just have to do it bit by bit.

And I mainly write fan fiction. I used to read a little, but I haven't had much time lately. I would say txteclipse's "Eon Chronicles" is one of my favorites. He stumbled upon OL and we realized our fics had a lot in common plot and character-wise. Oh, and I don't have msn.

I also saw your PM. I had to do a double-take when I saw the title page of my fanfiction sitting on your Kindle. I think I had a reader who printed out OL and read it while waiting in the car for his kid after school, but to see the actual thing on a Kindle...that made my day.

And I read the comments. Looking back, I see I did have a habit of ending most chapters with someone sleeping. I don't know if that was a good thing; I imagine it made a lot of readers sleepy. I've made more of an effort now to end many (but not all) chapters with a cliffhanger. I think the most riveting books I've read end the majority of their chapters with cliffhangers (I’m thinking of Suzanne Collin’s “The Hunger Games” right now).

The chapter length is crazy, too. I think the first chapter was a little over a page. But like you said, they got longer as time went on. I think for me now, a chapter is around 3,000-7,000 words.

Well I'm almost caught up, I have to have everything in by Thursday, so I guess I'll have some free time then. lol

I've done the 1k words a day challange before and it worked good a week. >.> Along with writing more, I need to visit the Gym more too. I pay way too much to no go. I guess I'll just add that to my big o list of **** to do.

Actually I'm planning on setting down and saying okay this many hours for this, and this, etc. I'm waiting till the end of this week, when I'm done with this class, I only have a couple of chapters left in the book, but I still have the lab manual. Planning on knocking it out by tomorrow (its pretty small). So far its been pretty easy too, just declare a variable or two and compile the program. As long as it doesn't have me write too many programs from scratch I think I'll be good.

Do you read fanfictions, or just write, if you read what is your current favorite? Also do you use msn?

Yeah, I understand about textbooks. School is starting for me on Wednesday, and I picked up the last of mine and moved into my dorm yesterday. My roommate, along with my two suitemates are all freshman. So yesterday, there were a lot of "firsts" for them, such as "I'M EATING MY FIRST COLLEGE MEAL!" or "I'M SPENDING MY FIRST NIGHT AT COLLEGE!" I find it humorous not in a demeaning sort of way, but because I know I probably said the same things last year without even realizing it.

I think finding time to write is a time-management deal as well. I find that when I'm busy I put it off until later, but when later comes I'm still busy. I try to set myself a goal of around 1000 words a day, and that's worked well so far.

And fanfiction has pretty much been my main tie to Pokemon, too. I also play the video games, lately Black. Since 2009 I've competed in a yearly Nintendo tournament in Seattle. I did my best in '09 when I got into the top 16 out of 128 with a rain dance team.

You have no idea how close I came to spewing cereal all over my computer when I read that part in parentheses this morning.

I haven't had time to read it here lately, I have a 700 page text book staring me down at the moment. Fall break is coming up at school and I hope that I can catach up on fanfictions.

I know what you mean when it comes to seeing your old work. I still have that story that I got four chapters in before I just kind of fell of the face of the world on. I plan to get back after it once I'm not so busy with college. I probably just need to manage my time better.

No problem on the comment, I left it half thinking you'd never see it. I'm glad your back into fanfiction. Pokémon is great and all, but to be honest fanfiction is what keeps me in the fandom.

I'd love to chat, having a conversation with someone who thinks outside the box when it comes to Pokémon (aka fanfiction authors) are alot of fun. I also find them very stimulating. Feel free to chat about fanfictions, Pokémon, technology, or any combination of the formerly mentioned. You are free to chat about anything really, but I may not be a very good conversationalist in other topics.

(That is by far the longest response I've ever type to my phone)

(Hopefully this is your new account because if it isn't, I'll be dropping this comment on some unsuspecting individual.)

Thanks for your comment, and I'm glad you're enjoying OL. A few of my readers from the old Nintendo Nsider forums found it through Google, too. And I find the progression interesting as well. I recently opened 391-page Word document that has the original. Some parts of it make me smile, and others make me cringe.

I haven't done much in fanfiction for awhile. Toward the end senior year things got busy so I stopped writing a partially-finished sequel to OL called "Elements" (which is also posted on IGN) and a companion story to OL that hasn't been published at all. And then in my spare time last year at college, I started writing an original novel that's been my main project since. So I'm a bit scatterbrained. But I'd like to get back into fan fiction at some point in the future.

At any rate, thanks again for popping in to comment. Hearing from someone from way back when has sparked my interest in fanfiction again. I guess we’ll see what comes of it.

And I haven't been on here in awhile, so regrettably I'm not very knowledgeable about what you've written. But if you have any questions or want to talk a bit more about fanfiction/stuff in general, feel free to drop me a comment any time. I'll be sure to check back here a bit more frequently from now on.
