January 9th, 2013 12:12 PMCourageHoundAhh. Thanks for that. Your right, opinions are just opinions and I should just leave it at that. Not worth getting worked up over.
Well, anyway i've been meaning to ask where you learned to draw and what not? Cuz I remember when you posted some nidoran art, and it was pretty good. -
January 9th, 2013 7:55 AMPatrickLast time I ever recall making an angry post was probably a decade ago. But then again, it was my first time on a forum and I was pretty young back then. I feel like I'm too old to get that worked up over anything except for stuff that's happening around me iRL. Online, it's just not that important.
I'm usually always relaxed or better online, even though tone is hard to notice over the internet. Even if it sounds like I'm ranting, it's really more of just an opinion, but I'm not really feeling any emotions at the moment. If there's something I don't necessarily care for, I just ignore it. There's no sense in trying to be confrontational, because (1) it eats up to much of your precious time to bother with (2) it's just an opinion more often than not. We all have things we don't agree on, I'm sure every has said something that may have struck a nerve with someone else even when unintended, and didn't even realize it, (3) you're usually not going to change that person's mind or PoV, (4) I try to see it from all sides, and (5) more often than not, the only reason people get upset over anything is because of a breakdown in communication. It's either misinterpretation, or the poster in question didn't write what they really meant in the best way possible, and may have opted for a shorter, less explanitory post. If you really must respond, I'd ask them to elaborate rather than exclaim "them's fightin' words". If you have good reasons to back up your argument, present them clearly and try to keep a positive or neutral tone at best. You will never convince anyone about anything in a negative voice. Then there's trolls, but you either ignore them or laugh with/at them and move on.
If you're reason for signing up anywhere is to enjoy yourself, you might as well, right?
It's one thing to take a stance for something and defend your claims, and there's nothing wrong with differing opinions and having good discussion, but as for anything potentially inflammatory, I just stay out of it. I also stay out of anything taboo or controversial, but that's more because I can't be bothered to talk about it anyway. I'm mostly on a Pokemon forum to (sort of) talk about Pokemon anyway, to the best of my ability, at least. :) I recognize I'm not great at it (better than everyone in my class, though, surprisingly), but hey, I like one of these new X/Y Pokemon, that counts for something. The Vulpix knockoff, however, is unforgivable.
Yes, that's a joke. :P Just to be clear, haha, I actually never care about that kind of stuff. If anything, I have my favorite Pokemon, and everyone else is usually just there at the worst. The only thing I actually don't care for is making something over the top and complicated for the sake of being over the top and complicated, but that's just because it doesn't make sense in the scope of animation, which once you understand is my background, becomes easier to say "ok, I can see why he says that". -
January 8th, 2013 6:00 PMCourageHoundHey I have a question. Have you ever made an almost angry or irritated post? Like say on a thread where someone was talking about "how every gen but gen one sucked?". Something like that?
Idk i was just annoyed reading how people are complaining about the new starters and even past generation pokemon being, by their standards, "un-creative" and "uninspiring". -
January 8th, 2013 4:42 PMPatrickWell, don't sweat it. Overall, I think you'll come around only when you want to anyway. Some people find it hard to find enough motivation for a long time, but hey, there's no reason to practice on your own time when you can. No one has to see what you sketch. I think that's just a motivation method to keep artists drawing, like on tumblr or other blogs. It... doesn't work for me, though.
I do like the colors, very fall like, and it matches the new youtube video (which I haven't seen yet, but noticed). But I think I like the old scheme a little more, even if I don't exactly remember what colors were used. This one might be better, I wouldn't rely on my scattered memory too much. -
January 8th, 2013 2:34 PMCourageHoundWell both are possible seeing as I'm taking both in my web design class. Its just I have way more motivation and inclination towards illustration.
But...i dont have anything I can post to have critiqued, but sometimes I just lack inspiration, and when I do get inspiration, I'm rarely in a position to be able to do anything. And I think I just need more experience drawing overall, cuz in artistic skill, I would rate myself about above the average person, but mediocre at best with everyone else.
PS: How do you like how I re-arranged my profile colors? -
January 6th, 2013 2:17 PMPatrickThe latter is really, really, really, really, really time consuming if you want to do it the "right" way. Which, to me, is the only way. Still, sometimes it has a payoff.
As for illustration, what exactly are you stuck on? You should, if you have anything, post something to the A & D board, and maybe you could get some helpful feedback. :) I mean, no pressure, I can understand if you'd rather not, I'm not trying to plug that part of the forum. -
January 6th, 2013 12:34 PMCourageHoundI would say illustration. Maybe both. But thats a big maybe
-
January 6th, 2013 12:15 PMPatrickWhat are you looking to do? Illustration, or animation?
-
January 4th, 2013 1:15 PMCourageHound:D Wow that all sounds super amazing. You have a great memory! Too bad memories of my younger childhood is pretty hazy. Anyway, I'd love to see one for myself too! I wonder how it would differ now than how you described. I'd surely buy some merchandise if I got the chance...which might not but any time soon sadly but one day. I do agree the younger kids get the most out of it, but i say better late than never.
Oh and thanks for liking the vid, :D although you should look at the deviant art page of the owner. But yea I absolutely love the art and the video.(lucky girl...) One of my long term goals is to become a better artist so I can create my own works.
And yes TV today isnt what it used to be -
January 4th, 2013 11:17 AMPatrickOh, and finally, that Crayon Dragon animation is great. :) I need to check that out again on YouTube where it'll probably be less choppy. Looks like a student film (Calarts), which explains why it's almost better looking than everything on TV right now.

January 4th, 2013 11:11 AMPatrickSo the first time we went to the Pokemon Center was probably like, 2001, 2002, something like that. That's why it's going to be a little hazy, but here's what I remember was different. The figurines on the ground floor may have started against the wall in the picture, but I definitely remember it being against the wall to the right of that picture. And it had ALL OF THEM. All 251 at the time Pokemon. I regret not buying more. I remember that's where I got my Parasect, Horsea and Flaaffy at the least, though. The ground floor was also more for trinkets, shirts, stationary, school supplies and odd paraphernalia. I mentioned cookware and china. Yes, you could totally deck out your kitchen with Pokemon towels, mugs, plates, etc. I bought this in that section:
Spoiler:
I also regret being young and poorer here too, because there was a REALLY cute scene of the "Cooking Club" preparing something on some of the china, and I collect Nido stuff to display my site. I wish I had it so I could show Nidoqueen's involvement, but everyone else was in good form too IIRC. Anyway, I also bought a bread cutter with Pikachu, Pichu and Chikorita patterns. Can be used for cookies, too. :)
The cutouts in the stairwell were Pokemon, obviously. The top floor, dolls everywhere. From HUGE dolls like this Lapras one to small, chibified plushies. Toys such as a talking Pikachu that wiggles his nose. My sister got that one, it was adorable. I bought I believe a Cyndaquil mini plush, Totodile (really cute), Wobbuffet, and a large life size Chikorita plush (to compliment my life size Bulbasaur I already had). I also bought a Vulpix hollow plastic something or other there. Also, I think every english published Pokemon book ever was there. The Viz comics of Pokemon Adventures, the one based more on the anime, and even the lesser remembered Pokemon Tales (the cute stories) and Magical Pokemon Journey with the talking Pokemon (my sister got that, too). I'm sure Let's Find Pokemon was also in the mix. You could also buy possibly every episode of the anime as well, of course in VHS (and maybe DVD) collections. You could also buy bookbags and stuff. OH OH, and the Pokemon Mini was there, too. I bought that as well, yup. :)
Oh my God, it was so cool. It was like Pokemon heaven, and what a time to be there too. I was younger and a bigger Pokemon fan, and there was so much more to offer. I feel like even if the store remained the same, I'd feel left out today because I haven't been involved with Pokemon since the Advanced Generation. Even 251 was a reasonable number compared to whatever it is now. But at least the magic would be there for younger people. Now I think it just kind of sucks for everybody unless you're eight or nine.
Oh right, and they played Pokemon music over the speakers. There was probably alot of trivia based stuff, too. I wonder if we ever got those photos developed, man that would help so much, and probably rush in a wave of nostalgia.
I imagine that the stores in Japan are like this, too, but hopefully way bigger, and hopefully house more than just the latest two generations. It probably houses even more useless merchandise like Pokemon toilet paper and show horns. Still, it's worth seeing. I know Japan doesn't really give a hoot about Nidos in the grand scheme, but I'd still like to hope there's something there I haven't already imported.
So there you go. That was the Pokemon Center, as best as I can recall until I find those pictures, which requires me taking a trip back to Chicago. n_n; -
January 4th, 2013 10:33 AMPatrickWell, let me tell you. It's a magical place with Pokemon goods as far as the eye can... actually I'm just joking with you. :P I can't remember how the Pokemon Center looked very much anymore. The Nintendo Store has the same layout, though, so I'll use that as a template.
There's two floors, but the store itself is relatively small (about the size of a fast food restaurant, maybe a double decker McDonalds or something). The ground floor of the Nintendo store is still dedicated to Pokemon. As you go upstairs, you'll set cutouts or something of various Nintendo characters, probably all Mario, I can't remember. Then it's got Kirby plushies to the exact right of the stairwell. Normally, this'd be a great thing for me, except they were all based on that terrible anime. Next. Immediately right past the Kirb-dolls is a display case of either game cartridges of all the Nintendo systems, or the systems themselves. In the area in front of that, shirts and bookbags, same junk you can get at Target/Walmart/Hot Topic/Toys R Us. Left of the staircase was some gaming booths, I saw SSBM was one of them, I suppose they may hold tourneys. Straight ahead was a place to buy actual games, nothing special. I think there may still have been a place for Pokemon comics, but mostly the Viz publications.
The ground floor, Pokemon plushies near the stairs, figurines against the back wall, more plushies surrounding this circle like table in the center where I think you could playtest the newest Pokemon game, whatever that was like two years ago. Also, they play Nintendo game music while you're in the store. I picked up on something from The LoZ. Seeing as this trip took place the summer of 2011, I didn't get a lot out of it aside from a Mew and Lapras plushie because everyone else was unfamiliar Pokemon wise to me (and again, didn't like what the Kirby stuff was based off of). Oh yeah, and somewhere in there was a Nintendopoly board game, which I only recalled because it also used the terrible anime designs for Kirby references.
My sister warned me that the store was nothing special. She was in NYC for an internship, and had already checked it out. We were both there before when we were younger and it was the Pokemon Center, so I believed her. Still, I wanted to see the changes for myself. I met up with her and my dad later, and she really couldn't wait to get the look of indifference on my face on camera when we walked in. It's so very mediocre it's not even funny. The Toys R Us in Times Square is way better, and has a video game section nearly identical to the Nintendo Store, but better in the sense that it's not just Nintendo.
Well, here's a picture of the exterior, anyway. Ignore Nidoran. :P
Spoiler:
See the back wall that says "Pokemon"? That's where the figurines are. And that "thing" next to the stairs is one of the plushie kiosks.
I'll contrast all this to the original Pokemon Center in a different message. -
January 4th, 2013 5:53 AMCourageHoundYea i dont like pesky insects either. But, err dont hold me to this but i'm pretty sure the gators are confined to everglades area and not really the urban areas. But I have seen some Gator intrusion stories on TV but i'm sure where exactly.
My parents always say they'll start traveling with me more but it never happened. But, :o what does a Pokemon Center look like? -
January 3rd, 2013 1:16 PMPatrickI don't mind middle of the road weather either, except that I dislike insects in general. I need to have fall through early spring as a reprive, or else they'll drive me mad (well, not really but still). Is it true about having a lot of gators the further south you go, though?
One thing my family tries to encourage in us is to do a lot of traveling, even outside the country, to broaden our horizons and our perspectives. And also, it's just sort of fun. I might not recall every state I've ever been to, but I've been to several. I think NYC and Chicago are still my favorite cities overall, though I think London and Paris was an interesting change of pace. I still want to travel to Japan, mostly just to get a cultural perspective. I think dropping by a Pokemon Center wouldn't hurt either if I'm close. Anything's better than the Nintendo Store in NYC, and I've actually been there before when it was still the US Pokemon Center. It was undeniably better that way because of the broader amount of merchandise (cookware! Yay!). Having to cater to a lot of franchises means it's now mostly shirts, some plushies and games you could buy at Target or GameStop or online. -
January 3rd, 2013 11:51 AMCourageHoundHaha yea. I live down towards the Miami area. Florida only has one season :P, But that being so, I kinda have a disliking for cold weather...or extremely hot. I like it when its in the middle.
However, I am sad to say I've never been able to venture out of Florida(not even past the Orlando/central Florida area). So yea its kinda boring for me. I'd like to go out and experience all the seasons and what not. You could say I live under a rock cuz I've barely experience all the wonders and things to see down here as well :L.
