June 21st, 2016 5:52 AMBlahTo reply later than I is not possible, again sorry for the late reply...almost 1 month late :c
So I kinda just fell off and stopped coming on here entirely for the good portion of a month and a half-ish. I see you've dropped mod status again. That probably alludes to being too busy to have gotten any progress again. It's quite sad considering you've been looking to commit to this idea for such a long time! -
May 26th, 2016 4:01 AMSopheriaSadly not yet...so much stuff going on urgh. Things should be getting a little bit less busy for me next week or so, so I might have time to work on stuff then :)
-
May 18th, 2016 2:15 PMBlahWelp, sorry for the late reply! I don't think I got a notification for this VM.
Now that it's actually been a couple of weeks, have you gotten a chance to set stuff up yet? :P -
April 28th, 2016 4:15 PMSopheriaYea, the unfortunate reality of adult life ;( But things should hopefully be a little bit less hectic in the coming weeks so I can get back to it slowly but surely :)
-
April 28th, 2016 2:50 PMBlahDarn, that's unfortunate. Hopefully it's being better to you now. Making a game by yourself can be very time consuming, especially considering you plan to do the art of your game as well. On the bright side, you have more time to let your ideas sit around in your head for a while.

April 28th, 2016 6:53 AMSopheriaNice to slack off every once in a while~ I haven't worked much on my game either sadly, work's been absorbing so much of my attention ;-;
-
April 28th, 2016 5:16 AMBlahSorry for the late-ish reply. Personally I haven't been working on much, I'm waiting for Ben and friends to green light the community hack. Until then, I'm slacking off :D
-
April 26th, 2016 9:56 AMSopheriaThanks! Aww well that was nice of him ^^
So, how's the ROM hacking been going? -
April 26th, 2016 7:06 AMBlahHeyy, congrats to you on the bold!! :^)
Yeah, I feel slightly guilty in a nice way because Ben is the one who paid for my silver, lol. -
April 25th, 2016 6:52 PMSopheriaHeyo, congrats on the silver!! (hope I'm not totally late on this ^^; )

March 30th, 2016 4:10 PMBlahUntil now. You're about to blow the water with your new game, I have faith!
By the way, I read a few threads on gamedev about getting started with essentials, it turns out I first have to learn how to use RXMP before that. The wiki suggests I make a game in RXMP, then move on to learning essentials. So I looked into it, and it costs money (80 USD). I don't know if I'm willing to pay that much for a fangame I'd distribute for free. I guess I could pirate it, but... -
March 30th, 2016 3:36 PMSopheriaHey! So so sorry I took so long getting back to you.
But yea, I definitely agree about GameDev vs. ROM hacking. I sorta prefer it that way, building something of my own from scratch (same way I am with development in general, I'm much better at building something from scratch than I am at modifying existing code). Sadly there's also fewer resources for essentials than there are for ROM hacking--tilesets and scripts, for example. But hopefully one day game dev will catch up in that regard haha~
It does seem a bit dead in comparison to the ROM hacking sections :c Maybe it's just because PC is really famous for ROM hacking and some really famous ROM hacks have come from PC, but that's not quite as much the case with Essentials-based games. -
March 26th, 2016 11:53 AMBlahYep, I understand your concerns, they're perfectly sensible actually. If only I was disciplined enough to sit down and read a book about something, maybe I'd have gotten better at stuff I do faster. Luckily enough, there are nice people in the art section who'd be able to point out certain things in your pixel art which can be improved. But yeah, it'd never hurt to have a solid conceptual understanding of what you're supposed to be doing.
I have thought about Essentials, I just haven't given it an actual attempt. I think game development has a bigger barrier of entry than ROM hacking though. In ROM hacks, you're essentially already given a completed game which you can modify things, add things, fiddle with maps/scripts/mechanics and as such you end up being able to get a young person to be able to edit things in the binary. The harder parts come in later stages of ROM hacking. I think GameDev seems to be the opposite. Actually starting your game is the hard part, and once you start, most of it becomes smooth sailing.
I have no idea how accurate that statement was, I'm just guessing from what I've seen snooping around the forums. The main reason I'm putting it off so much is because it...well seems to be pretty dead on this forum. I like to bring in motivation from people's comments and encouragement amongst other things. I'm not sure that's really there in gamedev, I see a lot of authors having to triple/quadruple post in their threads because the posting activity is pretty low. Of course, popular projects like Pheonix Rising are enjoying lots of activity, so if you make it big, it looks like you'd get a lot of support!
Maybe it'd be good for me to actually give it a serious try though. I'd want to take a page out of your book and read a few guides and the manual before that though. Dang my replies are getting to be pretty long, lol. I'll keep it more brief next time :P -
March 26th, 2016 11:07 AMSopheriaAhh yes, I know the feeling! It's a wonderful feeling. I bet you get that a whole lot with romhacking.
And yea, I wouldn't know where to start if I hadn't read up on it first xD And even if I had managed to dive into it and end up making something decent, I wouldn't have any foundation to know if I made noob mistakes and would therefore end up making more of said mistakes in the future without even knowing. Long story short, I'm more of a technically oriented person so I need to understand it in technical terms before I can really get a handle on it haha
And yea, that'd be great!! The extra bumps would totes help n_n Have you ever thought about trying out Essentials? -
March 26th, 2016 10:35 AMBlahWow, Pokescript. That's a term I haven't heard in a while, but no it isn't. It's straight ASM and reverse engineering game code, no punches were pulled! Not exactly pleasant, because there is no idb for Ruby, but it felt nice to do it without any aids. I can't really describe it well, but it's the feeling you get when you realize that something you struggled to do some time ago is now something you can do without giving much thought. The feeling of skill progression, is the closest way to describe it. That and the feeling of satisfaction after finishing, those are my drugs and I'm very much addicted :P
I'm a little curious to see how well your pixel art comes out now. You're the first person I know who has actually read a book on pixel art, before actually starting. It'll be quite interesting to see how your initial pieces will differ from others who just dove into it. You're basically my unintentional lab rat for pixel art learning techniques, hehe.
I'd have liked to help with your game, but sadly I'm not experienced in both pixel art ways and using Pokemon Essentials/whatever else people use these days. I could be there to bump your thread with unrelated comments, that'll be my role in this picture. :^)
