That'll get annoying really fast if someone has to do that every time. I don't ever log out, but whenever there's a premium forum, my skin changes to it and my settings never change.

My issues were the very hard to use quote feature (hence why I didn't quote you, I couldn't figure out how) and I hate the info change per post.

Instead of seeing something useful like "Joined Jun 2009" or something, you get "Been here for 8 years"... which is so vague, it's not even worth mentioning.

I also dislike the removal of natures per post as well. I recall browsing this forum way before I joined it for reasons long forgot, but I always loved seeing what natures each post would have, and it even made me wonder what I would choose as my own.

Even the dark skin choice of it still has way too much white, and white is literally the worst on forums. It just makes your eyes bleed, for the most part.

Really, the only things I do like are the bigger repository of notifications (they don't vanish after you click them too) and mildly, just the addition of flairs. But the latter is so mild, it's not that important.

So... I just feel it's a step backwards.

But this forum is so customizable, that's fine if you want to use it; but I'd prefer it mostly if it isn't made mandatory. It needs A LOT of work for me to accept that.

Oh, they did? Just out of curiosity, what exactly are some of the issues you have with it?

It always defaults to the light setting instead of the dark every time I log in too. I think I mentioned that in the feedback thread I made, so hopefully that'll be one (small) thing fixed.

I've already told several admins and all that of my concerns. And literally every single one of them was written off as being not needed.

So really, the one thing I can recommend now is just not forcing it on everyone.

It's acting up for me, in the fact it won't even stay on the dark setting and always defaults back to the light/dark mix. But that's the least of its problems.

If you really dislike the new UI that much, it'd probably be worth it to make a thread in the New UI Beta Feedback area pointing out the things that you don't like about it and possible ways to fix/improve them. Can't hurt at least to try, right?

Haha, "not all of us". Well, I can guess the one who probably does. And it's pretty mutual.

I just felt overwhelmed, unwelcome and really at the whims of what I considered cherry-picking issues to GET me banned. I got another infraction for almost nothing, I thought, so I was afraid to post out of fear of literally *anything* being misconstrued to really tie the knot.

I needed a break in any case, but I originally wasn't even going to return at all until at least one of the infractions finally did expire; which was October 29. And I honestly thought I would be banned inbetween there too, literally for not even posting or being here.

And the break was good; but my wonderful girlfriend always knows how to relax me and get me into a better mood about approaching these issues.
I had a bit of a trial with her in that time as well, and after that, I found a newfound confidence to come back, knowing I wouldn't be the same and hopefully the same kind of trouble wouldn't occur.

I mean, I'm not going to just declaw myself or go docile; we should all be allowed to voice our opinions, even if they're not popular; but I think now I can do it with more finesse. Because text is just that, it can be very easy to misconstrue what we write as something else entirely.
I needed to work on that anyway, so I came back.

I have talked with some admins too in the meantime and come to an understanding (eventually) with them as well, but I know some of them probably dislike me, along with some mods. But hey, that's why there are more than just 2 of them.
Still, I sure wish being able to ignore some people you just don't like (mod or admin alike) would sure help... but I guess that's just a test of mettle to show that you can take it; that I can take it and still be civil.

    Nah
I've been playing Fire Emblem for about a decade now. Basically playing Ike in Smash Bros Brawl got me interested in trying FE is how I remember it. My first game in the series was Path of Radiance. I've played PoR, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, Fates, and SoV. And Heroes.

SoV is kinda different from a lot of the rest of the series yeah. A bit of it's new stuff like dungeons, but the majority of it is stuff that I think was in the original version (Gaiden) like how strong terrain bonuses are, or how magic works. Most of the other older stuff are more in line with the rest of the series in general is like. Uh, probably, anyway. PoR and RD are at least.

There's two maps where you fight Camilla in Birthright. The first is in Cheve, where both you and her get Dragon Veins that shoot out lightning to zap either other with. I had thought that this was what you were talking about at first. So what we were both talking about was the second one with the fireballs. It looks like it's above ground, but it's more like a town under the Nohrian capital.

And yeah, it's a little strange how Reina can only support with Corrin, I don't really get why it's like that.

The way I've usually played Fire Emblem is more or less by placing units at the edge of the enemies' range and have them suicide on my units. Even if that enemy unit lives, then everyone else can come along and finish them off on my upcoming turn. So I guess my favored kind of units are more ones that don't die easily, either because they have a lot of bulk like manaketes or great knights, or because they're very difficult to hit at all, like swordmasters or ninjas (or anything with the appropriate breaker skill). Though I was never all that fond of the General class....probably has to do with their low movement range and typically abysmal Spd+Res. I think that female characters have overall worked a little better for me than males. Especially in Awakening, where they more easily get access to the almighty Galeforce.

And yeah, I don't think I've ever really had that sort of feeling between characters before.

You don't have to tell me that. I grind by nature; I'm an over-achiever. Of course, before random battles start appearing (even on hard mode), it was very difficult. Matches could be won and lost on a single critical hit. But once I have free reign with random fights, DLC is pointless.

So how long have you been playing? What was your first game?
I started on Awakening, just because I had heard so many rave reviews and was looking for 3DS games. And then it blew me away so much I knew I had to do more.
Apparently that was the start of modern FE, thus a good place to start.

I'd believe it too. I tried that remake for 3DS... Shadows of Valencia or something? Yeah... I could not get into at all.
I felt, after doing some research, it was more-or-less just a graphical enhance of a much older game. And that's a big deal to someone who's only played the later ones. It's hard to go back, and old FE especially doesn't really look pleasing to me. :/

Perma-death is a staple. If there's no consequences in the battles with characters you care about, then there's no real intensity in the gameplay.

I keep wanting to improve some good weapons in Fates, but for the rarer ones, I don't think you can even get more than one each, so you can't make a +# weapon. And it seems you have to buy probably 12 actual swords to get a +5 one... it's really hard to understand. Oh and ore too or something.... see?
They need to fix this in the Switch game, for sure. Go back to the Awakening forging.

Yeah, that's the Camilla map I was talking about. She stays in a corner and hammers you the whole time, then you have to fight Beruka and Selena. I had been grinding the whole time and was at the level, almost the top, and as I said, it took hours and many, many tries.

Or are we talking about the same levels? I'm pretty sure it was above ground along bridges and what-not. And I don't recall more than one level of her blasting you from safety than that one...? And it was Birthright... hmm.

I think I had more dread fighters than anyone else. I told you I love the shuriken, but I found the ninja classes were too limiting (they only use them), so almost everyone that got training with a shuriken with a decent attack and speed stat became a dread fighter; even someone like Takumi, despite he couldn't use his iconic bow. He was so much more useful that way for me.

Women especially, because they get Gale Force. Talk to my friend who battled my team of shuriken master women with Gale Force, Warp, and Replicate. He got destroyed in his home base in like 4 turns, haha.
Women seem to get more opportunities in FE, for sure.

I think my all time favorite unit was Reina, from Hoshido in Fates. She's a monster once you make her a dread fighter with proper training. All those skills too, etc, and the fact she recovers HP with each kill.... beast.

She's an excellent versatile fighter as a Dread Fighter. Her personality was very enjoyable too. The sweet older woman mother type, with an extremely passionate bloodlust. Very interesting combination.
Too bad she only gets support with Corrin. I wish more characters got support with everyone. I'm thinking of Yukimura too; he only gets Corrin too. Seems like a waste.

What about you? What are some of your preferences in characters, classes, etc? Do you find men or women work better for you?

I'm a fast attacking type, both in FE and even in Pokemon, and it pretty much matches my adamant nature too.
I can't get behind things like tanking in FE because the hit rates and all that is so bad, even with max stats, a wall is barely... anything. And then the massive HP decrease in Fates.... even more-so.

For Awakening, my favorite unit personality wise was Tharja. So much fun to use, but my Henry was absolutely insane with the skills I gave him. A mix that basically made him unstoppable, or at the very least, guaranteed to kill at least one unit, no matter who.

...You sure you don't want to battle? Haha, damn, the more I talk about it, the more sad I am that we can't.

Oh, is that part with the kids only in Revelations? I haven't played it yet, but if it's there, I can wait. I'm glad there is an explanation. All I know is it wasn't in Birthright or Conquest.

Still not sure about how someone like Gaius reincarnates, though. Tharja, as I explained, yes, I get it, but not almost anyone else.
The others seem a bit more transparent.
I don't know; I was hoping for a lot more unique personalities with kids. I had a lot of fun with that in Awakening, to see who each of them were, and how I felt they matched with their parents, etc.
Again, it stems back to my love of hooking them up. I love it when they connected and then could see their whole family life.

So as I mentioned with Kellam and Miriel, you never once had that sort of feeling either? You were pretty indifferent to everyone in that regard?
  11. Nah
    June 28th, 2018 5:19 AM
    Nah
If you plan on doing Awakening on Lunatic in the future, I have to warn you that it's not really possible to do without heavy grinding, and the only sustainable way to do it is through DLC maps (specifically EXPonential Growth and Golden Gaffe, and Bloodlines 3 and Rouges & Redeemers 3 are almost completely necessary too).

I've pretty much always played with permadeath yeah. Part of it's just that when I first started the series being able to not have it wasn't an option yet, so when it was, I was used to playing permadeath and saw little reason to switch. It does kind of add a little something to game anyway--the choice between pushing on but losing a unit forever, or restarting the chapter until you get through it with no deaths.

I remember having to redo the first Camilla map a few times this playthrough of Birthright, but the one I found more annoying was the 2nd one, where you're in the underground tunnels. Having her lob fireballs that hit 1/3 of the map literally every single turn was a pain in the ass, took forever to clear that map because of it.

I don't really think I quite understand the forging in Fates either, but I've not needed to really understand it yet either. I'm not sure if I have a favorite weapon type really.

Dread Fighter isn't a class I've ever really used before outside of SoV. Should probably make someone a Dread Fighter in my upcoming runs in Conquest and Revelations. Who would you say makes for good Dread Fighters in Fates?

Gave that video a watch, was cool to see, though I wonder how they found it all out in the first place. Idk if it's ever something that they'll ever be able to truly fix though, given that they've tried 3 different ways that have their pros and cons, nevermind that they each fit different gaming philosophies better.

    Quote:
I take it by your lack of response, you also don't know the relation with Awakening to Fates and the children being in it, etc, and all that?
Oh, I kinda missed that bit. I do know what the deal is actually. For outside-the-game reason, there was iirc a popularity poll in Japan prior to Fates' release for Awakening characters. The top 3 children units and top 3 parent units were Inigo, Owain, Severa, Cordelia, Gaius, and Tharja. So it has something to do with that, as a fun little thing I guess. As for for actual story/in-game reasons, Rhajat, Asugi, and Caeldori are, like you said, basically supposed to be reincarnations of the characters they resemble. The rest (regarding Inigo/Owain/Severa and Awakening-Fates connection).....is spoilers, so I suppose I shouldn't tell you quite yet.

That is disheartening to hear that Gen 7 removed them.

So much gen 5 really turned me on to triples (all that post game stuff) and now it's my preferred method. I guess I like being able to battle with a full team, which the game inexplicably tries to prevent at any chance when trying to battle. (and always caps at 50 too, which is equally annoying).

It's total nonsense that the mentality is that it's not considered competitive. I'd say the kind of teamwork that is involved to make 6 Pokemon work together with only a trio out at once (and any variation of them too) is the truest test of skill.
It breeds you to make the most fluent team you can.

Well, can't say I'm interested in any of that now. Oh wel.

Next time I play Awakening I'm doing Lunatic too. I grind so hard, hard was only difficult at first, then it got mega easy.
Birthright was pretty easy, but I swear Lunatic on Conquest is literally impossible without either cheating or DLC (which I view as essentially paying to cheat).

I assume you played perma-death on too, right? I don't like using units so I would constantly reset until I did the whole battle right, which is not only good practice, but it's intense to know you might have to replay a round for hours if you mess up.
In Birthright, despite grinding my nuts off, I recall the stage with Camilla on the attack (hiding out and shooting lightning each turn) took me well over 3 to 4 hours to beat, but I did it somehow without losing anyone.
And I'm a mega over-achiever when it comes to grinding in games and it was still that insane.

I'm still not even sure I get the forging in Fates. It's a lot different than in Awakening. Like you need full copies of each weapon to then forge them into +# weapons? I barely saw any difference either.

At least once your units get leveled enough, the minor stat decreases from stronger weapons doesn't matter much.
Did you have a favorite weapon type by chance?

I loved the additions Fates made with shurikens and knives; and those are my go-to weapons for almost any occasion. I love the distance, long or short, the stat damage, and in the hands of a skilled user, the damage. They are pretty much perfect for me, haha.
They were like tomes in Awakening, but better still.
I found myself making most units Dread Fighters just to be able to wield them, in addition to others.

I saw a video for that, hold on:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irQu9pvGb0Q

Here, check this out. They need to fix this, since a lot of the time (especially on harder difficulties) you just need to make calculations on what you will do if it hits or misses. It's wise to have backup plans if things don't go your way, but sometimes when you do everything possible to lower your opponent's hit and it's barely 10% for them, somehow they STILL hit.
And when you're up against a boss with a 30% chance, it feels more like 3%. It completely psyducks your game, really. And takes the fun out of it.
Like, great, so it's not about strategy, but more-so about luck.
I'd rather all moves hit 100%, then it would be really strategic, like Chess or something similar.

Haha, so it seems my gut is the opposite of what they claim? Well, they might just say anything since they have to pick a side, but they made it so open and customizable for a reason; there is no *real* canon.

There are a lot of ships that people swear by that I don't like at all. Like Lon'qu and Olivia. A guy like him hooking up with her simply due to a sword trick is so cheesy.
I think canonically he'd remain single, or at least after his support with Cherche, would possibly choose who I chose, which is Panne.
As she's a woman, but one not so fragile as a human, thus it would alleviate his fears of losing her like before. That and... look at Yarne. He looks exactly like Lon'qu. EXACTLY.
Yeah, not convincing me otherwise, haha.
Even funnier that in this pairing, he's the son of two of the biggest badasses in the game and he's a full blown coward. It just works on every level.

For the protagonist genders, again, I stand by my Awakening proof with Robin, but also Corrin being female doesn't work for me. Mostly because of Camilla. She needs to have a creepy, borderline incestual attachment to him; I feel that was the point of it in the story. It's not present if Corrin is female. Simple as that.

So you're not much of a romantic person like I am, huh? Haha. Well, luckily that's not all it's about. I take it you're not much of a fan of otome games either?
I really like characters in my fiction and even more so when characters meld together, either in friendship or love, so I love seeing that happen. And I am a bit of a romantic in that regard too. :P

Kellam and Miriel oozed that most for me. Miriel was the first person to recognize that Kellam had a gift, which was the first type of any sort of attention he ever seemed to get. And this attachment she had simply from analyzing him began to humanize her more as well. After enough time, she began to see him as not only an experiment, but a friend, and then even more.
Very romantic and touching connection. I could see the chemistry and why they would work together.
Better still, I discovered it by pairing them up, only because in battle they also compliment each other well. His defense boots hers and her special defense, etc, boosts his. They make a great team to fully round each other out.

And not to mention with Laurent, it explains why he's so similar to Miriel and nothing like Kellam; it's the running gag of his. Kellam even laments this in the support conversations with him "Didn't you get ANYTHING from me?"

And I can't think of any other child that is purely like their mother and not the father. So yeah, I'm pretty adamant about my head-canon, haha.

I take it by your lack of response, you also don't know the relation with Awakening to Fates and the children being in it, etc, and all that?
  13. Nah
    June 27th, 2018 5:02 AM
    Nah
There's no triple or rotation battles yeah. Everything is either a singles or a doubles variant. Probably has to do with how triples and rotations don't exist in the Gen 7 games, and they were generally never considered competitive formats. May also have been difficulty making them work on Showdown, but I wouldn't really know if that's the case or not. I could try to answer any questions you have about using it, though we'll see if my answers are actually helpful or not.

And idk, the idea of battling other people in Fire Emblem just never caught my interest for whatever reason. Doing at lot of grinding in Awakening for me was always either just to have fun blowing up maps with OP units, or, more recently, to beat Lunatic, as it's nearly impossible to beat that without heavy DLC grinding. I suppose I'm just fine with enjoying the game by myself. It's kind of like that in Soulsborne games for me too, I like the games and put a good bit of time into them, but have never really had any desire to engage in PvP.

I had fun in Awakening's story too, despite the flaws.

The weapon changes in Fates kind of put me off too when I first played through Fates. Hated using a weapon that deliberately negatively affected stats, but at the same time, you can't just use iron weapons the whole time either. But now it all doesn't really bother me.

There's a lot of things about Fates' gameplay that's a step up from Awakening's really. Besides pair up being improved, brave weapons are less OP, forging weapons requires more work (tho part of me misses how dumb forged brave weapons were in Awakening), overall better map designs (but with a handful of pretty bad exceptions) imo anyway, reclassing and skill learning changes, etc.

I've heard that the actual hits/crit rates don't exactly match what's displayed on screen too, though I've never personally seen any proof for it. Really wouldn't be surprised if it's true though.

I always have and always will play as the female Robin/Corrin, but I never really viewed one sex as the canon one. No real reason imo to have an officially canon one, might as well let people have fun with their own headcanons on this one. Though I've heard that supposedly the way Nintendo views it is that the male Robin is the canon one, and that either both Corrins are canon or they slightly lean towards the female being canon (but moreso towards the former than the latter).

I usually don't S-support people for character reasons, I guess I was never into playing matchmaker that much. Sometimes it is just for stats, sometimes it's just to get the kid unit regardless of stats (need to try to remember to get them earlier in the game this time when I start up Conquest soon--I'm nearly done with my 2nd Birthright run now).

What makes Miriel x Kellam one of your favorite pairings?

I clicked the one on PC (I generally don't much care for Smogon) and man, I was confused from the first page. All those options; I literally can't make sense of them.

So, I take it there's nothing like a triple battle or something? I certainly saw no type of options like that. And of course, that's my favorite style.

I did use some Java thing once, that was a lot like that, you could make your own, go to different servers, etc, so I have a glimpse of how the interface works... but it looks a million times more confusing...

This was back when gen 4 was the newest one, I recall. And sadly, I have no knowledge on gen 7, since I pretty much skipped that one entirely.

I get just playing around with it would help, but... it's really baffling to me. The longer I looked at it, the more confused I got.

Any reason why you don't want to battle in FE, by chance? You mentioned doing a lot of grinding and whatnot, so I'm curious as to why you'd put forth all that effort and not want to use it? Kinda reminds me of me, when I only emulated Pokemon games, yet still did IV/EV training... just because I'm a perfectionist.

When you mention the story like that, I can definitely see the issues, but I still had a lot of fun with it.
Fates actually pissed me off with those claims at first, where I was almost against it. Like "Oh, you really think you're so great, this better wow me immediately or I'm done with it"... and then it did, so at least there was that.
At first, I remember how offput I was at how they changed weapons and abilities to have all sorts of new variables, etc.
Like the skills in Awakening were very straight forward "Grants another turn if you defeat enemy", but in Fates, it was like "-2 stats if other units are friendly and female", etc.

I got used to it, but it was a learning curve. I did grow to like the new pair up system too; as in Awakening, there was literally no reason NOT to pair, but in Fates, it's more strategic. Now if only they would adjust their BS hit/miss ratios to be accurate, I'd be fine with it.
Pretty sure it's even confirmed the rates are off, hence a lot of frustration.

Fates has a really great story and for the characters, well... they're just as good, but it takes awhile to really get to know them. Like, they feel more human, but aren't quite as memorable.

In Awakening, character designs and little touches (like quotes in the shop) immediately paint a strong picture of who everyone is. Kellam always comes to mind; ironically, given what his shtick is.

And in Fates, you have to delve deeper and slower. For example, I was not impressed by Kagero much at all initially. She was an interesting and pretty cute ninja, but nothing about her was memorable to me at all. But I kept doing support and slowly but surely, I began to get a glimpse of her. Her friendship with Orochi, Saizo, etc; I began to get who she was and grew to like her. She's very subtle, ironically despite her appearance. So I appreciated like that.
I can't wait to do as much support as possible with everyone in Revelations; even those outside the group's allegiances.

I didn't dislike Chrom, but yeah, come to think of it, I can't really say who he is either.

So I take it you also think Robin is canonically female too? :P It just makes the most sense to me; and there are little hints, the fact she can form a relationship with Chrom (even though Sumia is canonical, I believe) and Virion's supports are most telling. Apart from Frederick or whoever his child may be, Virion's supports are only with women. He thirsts big time, so to have Robin included on that list feels out of place if she's a guy. But that's what I think.
I had no qualms in playing Robin as a girl.

And for Fates, I actually feel the character is male, which was a nice change of pace.

When you hook up, be it the avatar or other units, how do you do it? For stats or for who you really think belong together?
For me, it's the latter. I love characterization in writing, games, so when I feel chemistry, I put them together and make whatever their kid is work. I don't think you need to be an ultra perfectionist.
I remember the first pairing wowed me so much in Awakening, I loved it. It was Kellam and Miriel. That was really cute. So, stuff like that. Also, stuff I believe best fits the characters.

I'm actually tied for characters in Fates and Awakening; I can't think of anyone I really dislike. Maybe Laurent, ironically from my favorite pairing, but only because I never got a chance to use him because of the insane qualifications to do so. I had no idea... That annoyed me.

In Fates... I guess I don't like how some of the kids are just recolors from Awakening. The Thajra one makes sense (she reincarnated to be with the avatar, ie, you, which is her character), but I still don't even know how the story of Awakening and Fates even work with one another. Owain and the other kids are in Fates AS themselves with aliases... so I don't know, really.

    Nah
Basically Pokemon Showdown is a browser-based Pokemon battle simulator developed by Smogon. PokeCommunity (and many other places/people) have their own servers separate from the main Smogon one.
PC's can be found at this link: http://pokecommunity.psim.us/
    Smogon's at this one: https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/

It's much less pretty looking than battling on cartridge, but the plus side is that you don't have to bother with breeding and you can chat in and out of battle. It'd probably be faster to learn how to work it by using it rather than me try to explain it here in a VM.

Still not interested in trying a battle in Awakening/Fates, sorry. But regarding the criticisms of the story.....I'm not going to say Awakening's story was wonderful, and I'm not gonna call it muk either, but I can imagine where people's poor view of the story comes from. It's probably a number of things that all together cause a negative view of Awakening's story.

Spoiler: this is a little long so
Part of it's probably how Chrom is a kind of bland lord who does little in the story, but that's not so much his fault as it the fact that he has to share the spotlight with his daughter and Robin.

There's also the fact that Chrom and co. get away with a number of kind of dumb things, like:
"How do we defeat the enemy navy? Set half our ships on fire and throw them at the enemy and hope they don't notice til it's too late."
"There's a massive, elite force surrounding us from two fronts? Split up and fight one of them in a volcano of course!"
"I have the most valuable artifact on the continent that is needed to avert disaster. I should totes bring it with me to this meeting with this obviously evil guy who obviously wants it, and I should wear it as a shield too!"
"I found a random person lying on the road who knows my name before they remember their own. Gonna put my unwavering trust in them after a single battle."
"I found out that the person I found lying by the side of the road is the one who kills me in the future my daughter came from to warn me about. I should totally stop her from killing them and then bring them to the battle where, in the future my daughter came from, they kill me. And this is right after they get mind controlled to steal that super important artifact from me."
    "BECAUSE BONDS"

Valm arc was fun, but also literally filler, as it legit has no impact on the primary conflict.

Then there's the matter of Validar. He's often considered to be one of the worst villains in the series, as he dies, gets brought back to life by the dark god he's trying to resurrect, does nothing but his plans still work out until chapter 23, and has zero personality and character development. Then there's also how Grima gets no character development either, unfortunately.

I think that there's something else I'm forgetting, but that's the gist of it I guess.

But Awakening's story doesn't really bother me. "the characters from Awakening just pop a bit more..." is something I've felt too, and so have others. There's just something about most of them that makes them real likeable, which is a feeling I didn't have with quite as many of the Fates characters (though I still need to play with some of them more, especially the kid units).

But something to keep in mind is that there's plenty of haters for every story in Fire Emblem
