Very apt description. I've never actually gotten to play stadium 2, and now I certainly regret that! That adds a whole new layer to Lance and one that only makes me love him more.
You should check it out. It's tough, but still fun. Just be sure to use Pokémon from a GSC cart, as the Rentals stink. :P

The character expressions and dialog are one of Stadium 2's biggest improvements over the previous one. Makes it feel like you're actually battling these characters.

By the way, I totally agree with the comments on the other champions. I think Steven is the only one who comes even close in comparison. Cynthia certainly has the power to match, but not so many of the other things that make Lance so endearing. Steven is great, but he kind of has a bit of a 'better than you' air about him. Blue is honestly my second favorite champ, but he's obviously not the embodiment of a champion.
The Champion model that the likes of Steven and Cynthia were based on originated with Lance. In RBY, the Champion was simply whoever beat the E4 before you (Blue, in this case). Lance was the first Champion to be a friendly mentor figure, and they basically recycled that trait with most of the later Champions (again, particularly Steven and Cynthia.)

Despite this, though, Lance doesn't get even a fraction of the attention and credit that Steven and Cynthia get. :( Unlike them, he's never appeared outside of his home region (no, I don't count the PWT), and neither FRLG or HGSS did as much to promote him as ORAS did Steven. He even got cheated out of a Nendoroid action figure, which literally every single other pre-Gen 5 Champion besides Wallace got.

He also hasn't been seen or heard from in the anime since 2004, making him the only pre-Gen 4 Champion to have no appearances past AG. Even Clair has more appearances than him, let alone Cynthia and Steven.

Do you enjoy dragon types, or Lance in general?
It depends. I'm no fan at all of the more ugly/aggressive/stereotypical Dragons from later gens like Salamence, Garchomp, Haxorus, and the Box Legendaries. But, I love the more unique Dragons like Kingdra, Flygon, Altaria, the Latis, and of course, Dragonite.

You can easily see how Dragonite is a very fitting Pokémon for Lance when you read some of its Pokédex entries:

    Red/Blue:
An extremely rarely seen marine Pokémon. Its intelligence is said to match that of humans.

    Gold:
It is said that this Pokémon constantly flies over the immense seas and rescues drowning people.

    Ruby/Sapphire:
Dragonite is capable of circling the globe in just sixteen hours. It is a kindhearted Pokémon that leads lost and foundering ships in a storm to the safety of land.

His Gen 2 sprite was the best:

Batman pose while wearing a black leotard. Looks ready to battle, but is clearly there to have fun and could care less about winning. Shame there's no artwork of him in this outfit.

Lance, though, really showed his "adorkable" side in Stadium 2. Just look at the expression he gives when you're beating him:

    {<3}

    Select quotes:

    "Dragonite, FTW!"

    "Excellent showing!"

    "Ow, bad news!"

    "That's right! That's what I want!"

"Ow, a critical hit... Not bad..."

    "Critical hit! Nice one!"

"Yes! We own this match now!"

    "Ugh... Um..."

    "Gotcha!"

"You got me. You are magnificent!"

"I never expected another trainer to beat me... I'm surprised."

"That was close. Want to try again?"

"It's not that you are weak. Don't let it bother you."

While Crystal was good for giving him backstory and fleshing out his role in the game, Stadium 2 really gave him personality, depicting him as someone who was clearly in it to have fun and didn't care about winning or losing. I like that portrayal of him best, as someone who's very noble, powerful, and heroic, yet still has a sweet side and knows how to have fun. To me, that's what helps set him apart from later Champions who copied his heroism, but none of his charm, style, and grace. (Step forward, Steven and Cynthia.)

Absolutely. He always just felt so untouchable in class, style, and power especially when I was growing up. I don't know if it's nostalgia talking or not, but it has to be crystal for me as well. His battle theme and everything else about him was just perfect.

You've got that right! ;) Just a beautiful, world-class man in every way. Powerful trainer, yet with a caring heart and a good sense of justice. I've loved him ever since I was a little girl.

What do you think was his best game appearance? For the main series, probably Crystal, but I also really like how Stadium 2 portrayed him.
