previous hair versions, by the way.
As much as I liked the short bobs, it doesn't fit her character. Woe. -
November 15th, 2015 4:01 PMPokestick, good times.Yep, gotta keep evolving the bag beret cap hat.
-
November 15th, 2015 3:34 PMmachomuuHot, definitely. She looks great, I'd even say that this might be my favorite incarnation of her, though I think the hat could use a little less bag. Not all the bag, but I just realized, looking back, that there's been something of a bag evolution going on with it.
-That's not a bad thing, but I feel like it could do with just slightly less bag. It could be because of the shift in color that I think this, though, since I was so used to it being black it might just feel a bit off because of the drastic shift. -

October 26th, 2015 1:54 AMPokestick, good times. She isn't really supposed to ever not have it on, unless the story dictates it, so it's good that you consider it a focal point. I showed the taken off version so you could see how the clothes below work.

October 25th, 2015 5:44 PMmachomuuI do like the new design, it really works, but...I do have to wonder about that "Taken off" design. It feels like something's missing. And I know that makes sense when something that could be considered the focal point of the character, or at least something that you almost identify with their character, is missing, but here it seems like, and I don't want this to sound bad, but it looks kind of like she's lacking.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as I think that could easily be compensated for with a show of personality by the character, but I'd say her design inherently benefits from having it on. If I had to put this another way, I'd say that it probably comes from there not really being too much to her mid-lower body.
...Actually, this all does seem harsh, and I don't want it to seem that way because I really do like her design, but this is what popped up. -

October 18th, 2015 3:41 PMmachomuuWhat immediately jumps out to me is a brown or a dark green. Or maybe a brownish-orange (or just a darker orange). I think these could potentially compliment her color scheme pretty well.
Those are the colors I'd suggest, anyway. Orange, in particular, contrasts with the rival's blue, and it is similar enough to her hair color that it's not distractingly standout-ish nor is it too homogenized- well, theoretically. I don't actually know, considering this is just theory. But a brown would work for similar reasons. -
October 18th, 2015 2:44 PMPokestick, good times. The amount of pure black is basically to make it easier to make a comic out of. No need to bother with outlines and filling and shading all the time when you can do a black blob, you know?
That said, I'm definitely seeing what you're seeing. I'm going to be working mostly in flat colour, because efficiency, so it's important that the coloured and black fields still work and can translate 3D form properly within those constraints. Looking again, I think the rival's design does this much better, partially because the big black blob that is her hair still has definite character and creates form together with the face. The beret... Does not, in this incarnation.
Thing is, I don't know what colour to use, otherwise. Maybe it's even an idea to scrap the beret completely and make some sort of unorthodox hairband.
If you've got ideas, I'm all ears. At least now I've got a clear design standard (the rival).
