No, I know, which is why as soon as my laptop is fixed, I am going to look more into it.

Depends who you are. Finding the data for some may be fun, but others find it tedious, and prefer to hack as they find their ideas fun to play with. The most fun I've ever had though in hacking, in saying that, is a compluicated graphical thing in Kirby.

    More respectable indeed :)
Someone would have to continue the job with hacking that game though, you can't do much by just knowing where the graphics data is stored.

I've myself done research with Pokemon Yellow which really did lack too much information. Sometimes, I've thought about starting a hack of some Final Fantasy game too. However, to do major changes, I'd have to spend ages researching the ROM data. Doing something special like figuring out how map data works in a whole different game is always fun but then again, finding the maps for each area isn't that fun. Doing that, doesn't feel like hacking in the same way - it's just using the knowledge you already learned.

You could for instance compare it to editing wild pokemon with a hex editor (assuming you know how to). It's just pure machine-like job which ain't fun.

OK, fair enough. People aren't hacking other stuff as much, I agree with that one.

Which leads me to a different point now. So, if, for example, someone started hacking... a Kirby game for the GBA (despite only just figuring out graphics), that would be more respectable?

Whatever, I'm just sick of all hacks being of pokemon, and especially of either FireRed or Ruby. Why doesn't anyone hack something else ?
Rom hacking is doing research, not using the research done by someone else.

But I still keep my point that he won't learn to hack by starting with pokemon game of gen 3. It's not like it's impossible though but very likely.
I'm going to say this from my own experience; if I wasn't a fan of 1st & 2nd gen pokemon games instead of the newer versions, I wouldn't have made it this far.
Likely, I would have never even touched a hex editor which would make me no hacker at all.

Incorrect. There are many great hackers who hack even more advanced stuff without tools after they came out. It happens, and does exist, that some people don't use the tools due to all the possible bugs (kinda like people still use bows and arrows despite guns taking over the firing)

You're right that there are many good hackers who hack 3rd gen.
However, they kinda learned how to hack before all the tools came out.

You can never learn how to hack if you start with a 3rd gen game.
You do know that is kinda wrong, as... Well, it just is. People can never learn to hack if people dissuade them from doing it their way. Whilst I agree that the person you wer talking to should learn, telling the world that isn't the greatest road, as many great hackers hack 3rd gen.
