It's definitely hard to replace Gio, I guess we'll just have to hope that Willems matures into a better player in time for Brasil 2014. As for Huntelaar, I guess there was a reason he wasn't in the start-up. I prefer van Persie too, overall though I think their egos have just swollen too much since the world cup. They playing for themselves and not playing for a team. The only ones that impressed me were Vlaar (but I'm Feyenoord biased, hugely) and Sneijder.
Williams is an outside back. They didn't have anyone to fill the spot and his inexperience cost them. They are missing Van Brockhurst. I wasn't impressed with Huntelaar aerial presence or his hold up play. I can't think of an opportunity he created besides the Sneijder pass the moment he was subbed into the Denmark game. I feel if this Portugal proved anything, it was that he wasn't worthy of his starting spot. Then again, I am completely biased to the Arsenal skipper and English Premiere League top scorer.
They are, though that's to be expected when you put 5 attackers in the field. Vlaar did very good work though, I don't understand why he wasn't in the match against Germany instead of Willems. Willems just hardly does anything. As for Robben, he has this thing where either he's a hero (vs. Brasil) or he's completely and utterly useless (vs. Spain). As for Ireland, I do admire them though, they went down 4-0 but their fans still sang to them.
Our defense is pathetic. I don't think we played particularly well. Huntelaar hasn't done anything this whole tournament. We would have been better off without Robben. Both my teams went crashing out. Ireland is already eliminated but I would like to see them eliminate Italy.
It is indeed, I am quite disappointed. Truth is, this is the first match this UEFA where we actually played GOOD football, at least before the 2-1. And THEN the Germans choose to make a goal. Then again, most of it's on us I guess. Time to root for Greece.
