Yeah she probably does, they're marketing techniques, to have that knowledge and not use it to your advantage is like a video blogger uploading to vimeo instead of youtube even though he knows he can reach a wider audience through youtube.
Yeah, I feel some of the more out there criticisms over the marketing thing are a bit unfair, as you say, if you have something like that in your arsenal, you should probably make use of it. I just find it an interesting point in regards to some of her mannerisms which often feel (to me, anyway) like a sales pitch. Whilst its of little relevance, I also really dislike Alex sp perhaps that's why I note her association with him as high as I do.

She said "The game was to star a 16 year old hero named Krystal as one of two playable protagonists.
This one is my bad, I didn't pick up on that part, my apologies.

People see women (who happen to be powerful in a way such as having powers or combat abilities) and see her in a seductive pose and automatically think she's a powerful female character who HAPPENS to be sexy too, nah that's not how this works. She wasn't a person born into circumstance, she was created to be that way on purpose.
This is something we're actualy in heavy agreement over. A lot of the time women are designed with form first, character later. And that form is often not praticle, realistic or non sexualised. I don't disagree with her stances, I disagree with how she presents them. She's super selective about what she doesn't include and she makes sure the clips she uses reflects that. Quiet from MGSV is probably the best example of this and one I've had to debate about several times. She's tricky, because she's definitely designed with 14 year old boys in mind, but Kojima also outright sexualised and objectified the male protagonist of another game in the series and often includes various degrees of tension, innuendo and sexualisation of both male and female characters. The issue with Quiet though isn't that she's "sexy", its that her whole design was just to objectify and her characterisation was slapped on after, whereas all the prior characters (Maybe with the exception of Raiden, who was designed to appeal to a younger, female audience, although he wasn't wearing a weird thong and fishnets combo) were sexualised within a context after their design and outside of their primary image/existence. Which is a shame, because I really liked Quiet, I just found her outfit and movements appalling. (You can get around the outfit by equipping her with a different one, but thats not the point)
On a side note, Batman Beyond was such an awesome series, I'm really glad they included the suit.

Gonna need a source for that one as I only recall her saying something similar to that about Hitman. Regardless though it's a game mechanic, it's an option the devs have given you and games like that encourage players to explore, in hitman you get a penalty for killing a civ but it's redacted by simply hiding the body, and then saving before mucking about is just avoiding the "penalty" altogether when you can reload it. A lot of these games you interact with strippers either as a health/stat boost/a tool or they're simply there as an option to murder, because that is the ONLY interaction you can have with them.
I have no idea why I typed Max Payne 3 instead of Hitman, I was boss dodging a lot so I didn't have time to proof read haha. Yeah I mean the Hitman video where she goes in and goes out of her way to kill the strippers.

Though yeah, you're right when you say there's rarely ever a penalty (although arguably, most games have no penalties for mowing through anyone, regardless of gender and status) and you're also right about Strippers existing just as tools, boosts or background bullet sponges (Although again, most NPCs exist in the same capacity in these games). I'm not relly sure why devs feel the need to even include strippers though, they could simply just not have the option to go into the strip club (Although, there was the bit in Watchdogs where you went to the human auction bit and that was quite a cool mission in a really forgettable game)

The real problem, in my eyes, with the killing of stippers in games is that there is no consequence, although that's certainly a wider issue because killing any innocent person simply doesn't punish you in most games.

I've been on both sides of the fence with her, I started out not liking her at first but I started to dig deeper and make an effort to try and understand her point of view. Btw she did do a Lingerie is not Armor video, really enjoyed it.
Yeah, I noticed it uploaded, will give it a watch at some point because its always really bothered me. Like, its just uncomfortable. I'm not 12, I don't want to see some impossibly thin yet curvy 3D model of a woman walk around in tiny clothes because its just not believable in any context. It degrades women and it implies a level of stupidity in me as a consumer. I don't like either of those things.

I certainly don't hate Anita, and the level of abuse she's received is absolutely ridiculous. I'd rather people just left her alone and ignored her, or simply talked about her content and why they disagree with it than attack her directly because ultimately, in my eyes, she's just another Youtuber. I have similar issues with the content a lot of other Youtubers put out.
No problem haha, I've been discussing Anita's arguments for a few years now, can't say it has gotten easier but it's always nice to converse with someone who isn't a insult slinging monkey just cause you disagree. Pre-warning sometimes my replies might come off blunt or ruder than intended, I apologize in advance for that.
I don't see any merit or point in slinging insults at her or people who defend her. She's probably a nice person and she's never wronged me in any way, I just disagree with her content and how she presents cases. As I said earlier, she has a legitimate platform.

And its fine, you don't come off as blunt or rude. I get a similar thing where people often think I'm being sarky or terse, but that's just the way I type.

    Hello

I’m messaging you because I worry if me and you get into a full debate about Sarkeesian we will completely derail the main thread, however I’d feel rude if I didn’t address the post you took the time to write out.

When I say Anita stole content I mean exactly that. She took footage someone else took the time to record and refused to credit anyone. This wouldn’t be such a noted point if she hadn’t set up the Kickstarter where she stated the money would be used to fund the project and to purchase the games and recording equipment. She raised around $160,000 (A little short of that) and yet she was still lifting content from small Youtubers. So then, what did that $160,000 go toward?

Feminist Freq. may be a NFP, no one (well, not in our debate anyway) is denying that. The kickstarter and various paid media appearances are where she profited. Interestingly enough, far before she was famous, she was videoed giving a glowing endorsement to Alex Mandossian, a marketing ‘guru’ who specialised in selling products/brands via teleseminars which has fuelled the fire that this whole thing was a cash grab for her. I’m not entirely sure on that point myself and how much I believe it, but she certainly uses the techniques she learned from him in her media.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaPbgNVuaEI (video for ref.)

One of the lies that comes to mind very quickly are her infamous claims around Star Fox Adventures. Anita presents the initial game concept as being a game headed by a strong, female protagonist who got sidelined because she was female and relegated to a side character in a bigger game. This isn’t what happened. The original game, Dinosaur Planet, had two planned protagonists (brother and sister) who the player could choose between. Anita obviously researched the game (providing concept art, early images and the bulk of the back story) but she deliberately missed out the male counterpart because it didn’t fit the narrative. The portrayal of Krystal in Star Fox is already bad, there’s no need to spread misinformation to call out her sexist portrayal. The only reason you’d lie about the original game is to create more anger and warp the narrative.

She also made the infamous gaffe about Batman, saying the game designers made it impossible to see his butt. This is simply not true. She goes so far as to suggest developers ensure male butts are always out of sight, this video highlights it quite well (also with a shot of Batman’s batbooty) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB_hf7WOgaA

Then there was the infamous scene from Max Payne 3, where she suggested the gamer is encouraged to go around murdering and abusing strippers. Something that in reality is never pushed on the player and that you have to go out of your way to do.

There are numerous more, I started watching her videos with anticipation early on because I was getting sick of female characters wearing a metal bra and thong as end game armour and the like, but was quickly disappointed when I started seeing her state things I knew were blatantly not true.

I unfortunately cannot watch the video you linked as currently at work, but I will give it a watch later and get back to you on it, my apologies for this.

As I say, I really didn’t want to do you the injustice of bypassing your clearly thought out and well presented post, there’s a lot more to this debate and I would enjoy to continue discussing it with you, sorry for the small scope of my reply, I’m dodging and ducking management as we speak haha.
