    er-hem. Anyway

It's very much between Dr. Strangelove (which I've a new-found enjoyment for lately) and 2001 for me. An almost impossible call. On one hand, I was majorly put off by Dr. Strangelove's ending and felt like the character himself wasn't even remotely deserving of the film; on the other, 2001 is full of stuff that doesn't, and probably won't ever, make any sense and a huge amount of that film could probably have been cut out without making any real difference to the overall feeling of it. But that's true for a lot of Kubrick films, I guess. They're both really brilliant, though - I guess I'd give the edge to Dr. Strangelove very slightly. Thing is that they're so dramatically different to each other that it's hard to compare them, but I feel like Strangelove is the more entertaining of the two - although, that's owing largely to its more watchable length and lower fat (as if that's a term, haha) than 2001.

I listened to the new Youth Lagoon album, by the by. It felt like very straightforward art pop though and I wasn't really impressed. Couple of nice moments but it was generally boring and, as much as I hate to say it, I don't like his voice when he's so much more bold with it.

Heh. I'll hold off giving any opinions on it in that case, then. Surprised that it's your last Kubrick though, since it always seemed one of his "biggest" to me - which was your favourite of his so far?

He's not, but I'll find it anyway!

Curiously, on the topic of Kubrick war films, have you ever seen Full Metal Jacket? It was the last one I watched.

have not seen Only Yesterday yet but I've heard very good things, so it's only a matter of time! both Mononoke and Fireflies are two of my favorite Ghibli's, in fact they flesh out my top 3 with Whisper in the Heart as the #1, but I'm still missing a considerable chunk of Miyazaki's filmography, so. should probably hop on that.

my Malick ratings (so far) are The Tree of Life > The Thin Red Line > Days of Heaven > Badlands, and the fact that I fell so hard for Days of Heaven is a testament to how psyducking good the other two are. I don't really even like war films that much but The Thin Red Line was absolutely incredible, imo. need to see the other two at some point, even though I've not heard good things about To the Wonder. Knight of Cups I'll be seeing in theaters even if it does terribly just so I can see a Malick film on the big screen.

hahaha really? I'm always a sucker for sentimental muk like that, for the most part, as long as it's not too mawkish. and even when it is, sometimes. I just thought it was endlessly beautiful and it tugged at my heartstrings in a way I was not fully expecting! plus all the writers' block / creative wells running dry themes struck a nerve.

the 2 stars for Primer surprised me as well, I was fully expecting to love it, but I found it mostly inconsequential in the end and didn't think it was a very successful mindpsyduck. most of the dialogue was completely uninteresting to me and I thought the end was entirely underwhelming. I fully expect it to go up in my estimation if I ever feel compelled to rewatch it considering all of the muk that I probably didn't understand that took place, but for now, was not a huge fan.

in other news, Days of Heaven was completely transcendent upon second viewing. Malick is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors ever.

It's that sort of temperature around the country. I'm in one of the supposedly colder areas and it's still 30+ all day every day, haha. Last I went to Rome I think it was creeping up to 40 or so, so it's not so bad for you haha. If you ever have a chance, you should go to the Vatican at 12pm on a Sunday. The oul pope pops out for a chat. And heh. Tell me more about this "real Rome". ;]

I've heard so many good things about Florence. Dead jealous. Are you taking a train from Rome? I want to organise a trip there some time.

Apologies for those expecting a Futurama reference, but I can assure you that I have not missed a 'the' in the title of this blog post.

I assume that maybe three people will check this out (those three being shenanigans, maccrash and Rest), but I thought I'd do my part to publicise the brilliant new short animated film World of Tomorrow by Don Hertzfeldt. The brief synopsis is below, although...

So... it's been a while! But it'll be worth it when you see evidence of my visit to London's first cat cafe! Similar to the ones in Japan, Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium opened up on March 1 of this year in London (about 15 minutes from my house)... and it's already fully booked up until June! Deservedly so, as well. Home to about 10 rescue kitties - all adorable - it's a supremely relaxing environment where you can read a good book (on offer included The Art of War by Sun Tzu, Long Day's Journey Into...

A bit of background is necessary for this one, as it's my favourite in this burgeoning 'series' of blog posts and a bit of context goes a long way.

At the end of last month, in and around Thanksgiving, I went to the US for just over a week to visit some friends out there (one in New York who is from there originally, the other in Virginia who's doing an internship at NATO for 6 months). I'm lucky enough to have been to NYC a number...

A pretty interesting article comparing Nintendo's recent fortunes to those of Walt Disney Animation Studios in the early 1980s.

If you like either of those things (whether recent or from the early 1980s), I suggest checking out this article.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

(I haven't totally left this place forever, just yet. :D)
