oo gj making it through exams, so theres more at the end of the year? how do admissions there work anyways, do universities look at your final marks? cause I know in the US most schools have already sent out acceptances and stuff

oh yeah that makes perfect sense, that's pretty much how I've approached the piano and philosophy. just only wish I had more time to pursue them on my own, but learning them in academic/proper settings kills my enjoyment of them. do you have any favourite specific topics in history?? sounds like you're really interested in the classics, whenever I look into history I'm always focused on relatively recent stuff. for that reason I probably wouldn't want to go back to Greece if I were travelling, I remember lots of it well enough and I'd really like to go visit Cambridge. it has such iconic architecture and a fascinating history - being one of the oldest schools in the world (and even in the 20th century had people like Wittgenstein, Russell, Hardy, Ramanujan, etc).

I finished Donna Tartt's book! it had such a depressing and fitting ending, though connecting to the characters felt a bit hard since everyone's like crazy or evil. still a fascinating read, I always wonder what it'd be like at a small tight-knit liberal arts college, but it's not really common in Canada. you've mentioned Murakami in the past so I've been reading A Wild Sheep Chase lately, what a wacky and surreal book so far, I plan on following it up with Dance, Dance, Dance. I skipped the first 2 books in the "Trilogy of the Rat" series so hopefully I'm not missing anything too important??

eh, been a terrible week for me, hope things have been going better for you

always hear how much you enjoy history so I wonder why you didn't take it in senior year? to make room for other courses more relevant to your university plans? hm I don't think we visited many major tourist attractions, just walked around downtown at night admiring the bright lights and architecture. also visited a lot of cafes. I actually took a course on modern architecture last semester, we didn't study any ancient buildings but we did cover Chicago school architecture so experiencing it in person was lovely. interesting that you should mention ancient roman architecture, I was really into that stuff back in elementary school, and in high school I took a trip to athens where we looked at some ancient Greek buildings so that was neat

actually pretty cool that I'm reading 'A Secret History' now because I have never had any serious background in the classics, so the change in scenery has been a long time coming. I'm in part 2 now, curious to see what direction it will take, since the narrator is talking about everything in past tense and without much regret, so it's not like they ever get caught or anything? guess I'll just have to read on

I have absolutely no ideas yet for what a future business might look like, but my friend I mentioned has a really strong background in life sciences (in typical asian fashion he's being forced to study for the MCAT. also his dad's a doctor, mother an orthodontist) and AI/machine learning so in all likelihood we'll be looking to do something relevant in bioinformatics, if we ever actually create a startup

btw currently reading 'A Secret History' and the protagonist reads a Raymond Chandler detective novel at some point which is beautiful (I mentioned before that he's my favourite writer!)

so glad you mentioned Carrie and Lowell, with such memorable lines as "we're all gonna die! we're all gonna die! we're all gonna die! we're all gonna die! we're all gonna die!" it never gets old

'Illinois' is lovely, think my favourite off it would be Come on! Feel the Illinoise!, which uses a jazzy upbeat 5/4 time signature in pt 1 to give the impression of a prolific, lively city sporting bright lights in the air, and an introspective second part with ridiculously cheesy lines like "And I cried myself to sleep last night, for the Earth and materials, they may sound just right to me!". that feeling I had of getting lost in the streets of Chicago and admiring the brilliant architecture, breathtaking sights and just trying to take it all in couldn't have been represented better.

other than that I don't think I have many memories attached to albums. some by Elliott Smith who I mentioned is my favourite artist of all time, mostly sad and depressing stuff. one of the stories told that has stuck with me is from 'Hospice' by the Antlers, the album is about a nurse who falls in love with a cancer patient and ends up in an abusive relationship as the patient lashes out in frustration. doomed from the start, it begins really sad and just grows sadder and more haunting as the songs go on. uhh when I was younger I think I'd wanted to go into theoretical physics, cause I read a lot of those Stephen Hawking books like 'A Brief history of Time' and 'The Grand Design', and while I enjoy math now, I'm not sure where I'll be after I graduate. I've been leaning away from research just because that's a lot of stress, with long hours, awful pay etc. I think I'd be miserable. I will probably end up in a field like data science/statistics, my dream atm is to create a machine learning start-up with a friend. running a company sounds like such an exciting, daring, risky and fulfilling endeavour, it's unlikely and I'm not getting my hopes up but if we can pull it off that'd make my life, I'll die happy

yeah, I actually didn't eat any of the steak, I had a hamburger (but I ate one of the pancakes and it was 8/10)! I'm told the steak was very bad. agh I can't get over how much I love Chicago, there's a Sufjan Stevens song called 'Chicago' where he sings about the trips he made there with his friend when he was younger, and how he's grown from his experiences. so I made sure that entire album was played multiple times during our time there - a lot of interesting contemporary classical/jazz influences that show up throughout but yeah, there were lots of albums/CDs I had on my mind

hm GH Hardy's book was more of an essay than a novel, he wrote it mainly to give an idea of how mathematicians think of the subject, of which beauty plays a large role. actually I'm not sure how I ended up finding him, but most philosophers I read are famous and generally taught in introductory classes

it's hard to say what goes on at uni, like it depends on what school you go to, what program you're in, and even what professor is teaching it. this year our real analysis class is taught by someone who's really familiar with the Chicago school of analysis (his phd advisor was Charles Fefferman, a world leading mathematician who taught at UChicago - Fefferman graduated from uni at the age of 17!) so we ended up doing a lot of Fourier analysis, rather than the Lebesgue measure stuff that is usually taught in real analysis. also depends a lot on how talented you are, some unusually strong students will be able to take more advanced classes sooner.

I'd like to hear about what interests you have with regards to uni/future careers! I was lucky that finding something fulfilling/interesting came so early, don't know if it's reasonable to expect people in high school to already have even a rough idea of what they want to spend the rest of their life doing

I don't know why but today I'm in the mood to talk about my favourite dinosaurs! Dinosaurs are incredibly cool creatures that I've always been interested in studying so what better than to dedicate a blog entry to them? Today, I'll be talking about the Velociraptor but I will be probably blogging about some of my other favourite dinosaurs from the three time periods in which they existed - the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods in later entries. For now, feel free to enjoy this slightly...

Five years ago, I bought a small orange and white furball from the pet store and called it Toast. Today, I lost the guinea pig I'd loved to old age and I'm throwing exam revision aside to come to terms with her loss.

She was sick over the past few days though she'd gotten better. We wrapped her in one of my old jumpers and my sister thought she's recover just fine.

Only after dinner was I told that she died. They buried her in the backyard and held a small funeral...

Hiya! I'm going to Europe for three weeks starting from the 11th till the 3rd next year so if I disappear off the face of the Earth, that's why. Anyhow, I'd like to ask if people would know some good places to visit where we're going?

We're going to the following cities, each for 3-5 days:

- London
- Paris
- Venice
- Rome
- Milan
- Zürich

We're already going to most of the iconic places (e.g. Eiffel Tower and Big Ben)...
