Before the next question, which is making such an odd interview flow to be honest, I have to agree and also comment that when you developthe idea, a person has to develop it according to their writing style. Her style is very hard to grasp and difficult to read at times.

As for ideas, well, it's hard to explain inspiration... sometimes. those random flashes of thought maybe but not when you're watching something and wonder "what if". It might be difficult to articulate though. Who can say?

When you come up with characters do you visualize them in your head, imagine them talking, moving? Do you imagine them with others? When you create the character, is it how they are at the end of the story or the beginning? Do you think of how they should develop?

The answers here are incredibly worrying to me. I understand the need for bios. I truly do understand but I kind of believe the character should be imagined and visualized first, then the bio is created. I've always found it easier that way, at least presonally. I can imagine them moving, talking, thinking, how they look, if they're attractive, etc. Then I write it all down. And even then, it's never complete because you can't write how they develop because you haven't written them yet.

The fact that she doesn't imagine them talking makes me question dialogue in general. Words are naturally stuttered, spoken over, used incorrectly, etc and rarely do people speak perfectly unless they think about what they're saying. Most people, especially teenagers, don't think before they speak, so it naturally comes out awkwardly. There's also the repeated use of "like" and "OMG" and such everywhere in teenage speech, sometimes even in children. And the swearing varies too. Some curse more than others but there can't be cursing just because either. Delicate balance there. Same with the Japanese terminology. That needs to be looked up before it's used.

One of the most important things to do with characters is imagine their interactions with other characters. It improves both characters. If there's no imagined interaction, it doesn't turn out well when put to paper. Family reactions are different from friends and villains or strangers. People wear different personas for different interaction. Whether they're the actual behavior of the person is for another question. She needs to imagine interactions with more types of people.

I don't mind her thinking about the characterization at the beginning of the story but an idea of where they'll be at the end is always helpful, so the reader and you aren't staring with confusion on why a character did this or that. Development has to be realistic even for a fantasy setting. Making it up as you go along isn't very good. Even a little planning and research helps you not lose inspiration or get lost. Now it changing from expectations as the story progresses is okay. That's understandable.

This should be interesting. I'll start with the first two.

How do you come up with your ideas? Have you really fully outlined a story before?

I'm not completely worried about the fact that she doesn't fully outline. It's probably a good idea to get a vague sort of idea of how the story goes though, just to have a sensible pacing of the story. Have a small inkling of how it's going to go, keep an even and steady flow, you know. It helps fight against writer's block a bit.

However, I don't understand how she comes up with her ideas. Maybe my wording was too vague though. I kind of figured that I had asked how she becomes inspired, how does she expand on her thoughts to make this a full-fledged plot, why this character is the villain, etc. That might have been my mistake. Assuming makes and a$$ out of you and me after all.
