outside of overwatch I'm not really playing any games atm, but I've been considering trying 'Kentucky Route Zero'. I don't know much about it other than that it's about a road trip and was influenced by the magical realism of Marquez's novels and Southern Gothic elements from Flannery O'Connor. I've only ever encountered magical realism in Murakami's books so idk what I could expect, but it sounds really imaginative and I do like road trips... otherwise I'm looking forward to 'The Last Night' which isn't out yet but the trailer looks really beautiful so far, pixel art + realistic weather/lighting looks so beautiful, much like minecraft w/ shaders. the creators sound very passionate about what they've done visually, they cite filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock as inspirations, and you can see at like 3:22 they use a 'dolly zoom/Hitchcock shot' where the background seems to expand/zoom out to add to the storytelling.

actually I've never been all that interested in movies or photography so it's dumb luck that have any idea how a 'dolly zoom' works or what it even is. some time ago I saw a youtube video by a channel I really like, Every Frame a Painting, and he mentions the 'telephoto lens' and how it 'compresses the background' in one video, so I'd researched it then. I've also been considering buying 'Disco Elysium,' but I don't know much about it other than it is an rpg game with isometric graphics, similar to some cult classics like Planetscape Torment or the original Fallout 1/2.. apparently it's banned in Australia or something? idk what's going on there

how do you find books to read anyways? just recommendations from friends etc? I'm not familiar with novels published very recently. though last year I did read the 2018 novel 'Normal People' by Sally Rooney, a coming-of-age type story, following 2 ostensibly normal people (of course they are anything but normal) as they go from high school to university. Rooney herself says one of the major themes is people trying to navigate their social lives as older/traditional institutions become less relevant, and anyways it's quite popular so maybe you've already heard about it. one thing I did find memorable was when one of them reflects on typing/structuring lengthy emails to the other and how engrossing that kind of correspondence is, at the time it honestly reminded me of some of those older conversations we had

Rooney's political views on how society is structured is sprinkled throughout the book, but I'm not sure that I've ever cared for reading into the 'social commentary/critque' that you're typically supposed to analyze in literature. the writer has control over every minute detail of the fictional world, of course it could be tendentiously structured to express literally any viewpoint. that said, the scope of what is done in literary criticism is usually much larger than just analysing these kinds of 'social critiques' the author makes, I only got a small glimpse of it in uni and I'm just average at it I think. I do share your feeling in admiring people who excel at grasping thematic ideas, noticing allusions etc.. though I don't think my reading habits are particularly academic, I always experience novels for the sake of introspection. I always look forward to stuff that resonates with me and I'm always looking at when I like or dislike what I read, then asking why. I often muscle my way through books that bore me to no end, negative experiences are important to me, I think they're indispensable for living life fully.

ey thanks, I did originally plan on setting my avatar to some kind of style transfer image but I didn't think anything could compare to the unaltered version. I am still quite impressed at how well style transfer works, look at how flawlessly it imitates this acrylic drawing style I found on reddit
    Spoiler:

we kinda gave up on Terraria and played League of Legends instead. I started a new account to try and relearn it - basically a new player since I hadn't touched it in like 5 years, I really like some of the new stuff- Zoe's kit and design especially, I think she might be my favourite champion in the game (also played tons of Jhin!) but I always seem to suck at her. I'm somewhat incredulous at how toxic people are in this game, especially in unranked games where there isn't any reason to care for winning, you don't seem to find that kind of salt in fps games like overwatch or w/e

to finish my League experience, I spent the past 2 days spamming ranked games to move my original account back into gold - and I think I'm done again, outside of the occasional game. hopefully I can free up more time to read/do other stuff... atm I'm reading the 'The Odyssey' by Homer and 'Child of God' by Cormac McCarthy, and with how much I've seen ancient greek literature hyped up I was kind of expecting 'The Odyssey' to be really palatable even to someone like me, but I've been kind of indifferent to it, I'm not sure I get it. The ideas/themes are so old and have been beaten into the ground so thoroughly to the point where everything just feels really banal and tired, I'm guessing that you're supposed to read it in the "context" of being an iron age poem, but idk how to do that. maybe I should just stick to 20th/21st century literature? it was a really fascinating experience when you recommended that I read Ishiguro/Donna Tartt - all my favourite works are somewhat recent too. Ishiguro actually had a novel put out this year that I've heard really good things about, I'm wondering if I should give that a try? idk if you've been following that kind of stuff - you did mention reading The Buried Giant. anyways I'm excited for 'The Trial' by Kafka, from what I gather it has a really surreal/dreamlike and nightmarish style that sounds really gripping

omg I had to google e.g. what 'tort' meant and read up a bit because I either never learned this or have forgotten it, I've never found any of this stuff intuitive. I took an introductory class to Canadian law in high school, and remember quite a bit of memorization but that's it. in north america the LSAT is known for having quite a lot of logic puzzles so I'm not surprised there is an emphasis on technicalities in this field. statistics is definitely something I'm more comfortable with, if you ever need help there I think I could lend a hand?

hmm no idea how far we've made it into terraria, we kinda just explored the surface and did a bit of mining... I found a finch staff that lets me summon a bird that fights for me, it's pretty cool. yeh I found minecraft a lot easier to learn, I eventually figured out how to run a server on my computer but I'm paranoid of how safe opening up ports in my firewall is?! so the 2 of us stuck w/ terraria... it's a shame, I love how gorgeous minecraft looks with shaders

in the end I accepted that first program's offer which is close to home, and it doesn't look like I'll get into any of those programs I applied to in the States (I'll be cheesed if I do D: ). I don't know that I can relate to dealing with imposter syndrome, I used to tie up my sense of self worth with how intelligent I felt I was and constantly felt insecure about it. now I think I've grown away from that mindset and kinda just don't care anymore, but it's left me with a horrible work ethic, since for so long I believed in 'natural talent' and trying to accomplish stuff with minimal effort. I've been reading/trying to get work done while I wait for the remaining results, but I keep procrastinating and getting derailed. today I've just been messing around with someone's implementation of style transfer, it has no business being so much fun, and yet I've gotten hardly anything done so far. there's a novella by Thomas Bernhard called 'Concrete' that's about procrastinating, it follows a guy who's worked on his lifelong passion project for the past 10 years, a biography/study of Mendelssohn, but hasn't written down a single word yet. I adore it, it's so funny. I dunno how busy your reading list is, but if you also put off working a lot, I'd highly recommend it! anyways, what are law classes like? I always assumed there's a lot of philosophy involved, what with trying to figure out how legal systems related to 'justice,' is there a lot of essay writing/in-class discussion?

I used to play a lot of Viktor/Swain/Vel'koz/Leblanc mid with some support games thrown in, but yeah I haven't touched it since high school, where I had tons of spare time. League is one of those games that I've spent over 1000 hours playing but hardly remember any of it - there were a couple of memorable moments going really silly picks/builds with friends that stand out but otherwise it definitely sucks up a lot of time... I'm not sure if I'll ever return to league but this week has been fairly stressful so I've been goofing around a bit more to try and unwind. I've been trying to get into Terraria among other things, I bought the game ages ago and never knew what to do. I've been playing with someone I know irl, so not knowing what to do isn't as bad

The program that I was accepted to required me to accept/decline the offer by Tuesday for a guaranteed admission, but I haven't done that so it's possible (likely? idk) that they give away my spot and I can't go there. I wanted to hear the results from all the other programs, but I've been super stressed out cause my uni marks are pretty average, so choosing not to respond might be a really ???? decision by me, I'm not sure yet. Hopefully I don't get rejected by everywhere else =S I don't usually like to take these kinds of risks but ugh it's such a big decision I wasn't sure what to do - GRE scores aren't required this year so I think admissions to US programs will be more competitive too, there's nothing I can do about that now but sit around and anxiously question my life choices. also yeah covid means idk if it'll be online :V Law sounds pretty fun but I'm still surprised that most people there have their future career decided by high school?? anyways why'd you decide on a double degree? do you already have a good idea of work you want to pursue?

huh I noticed you mentioned League of Legends in your AMA, hows that been? I remember playing when Kassadin was left at a 95% pick/ban rate for like a year, I wonder has the balancing gotten any better???

Prof. Arthur is really old, he was completely unfamiliar with technology, assignments would be handed out in class and there wasn't any course website etc. so the class just stopped after campus closed. :( he had the TA upload lecture notes I guess, but so much of the fun was just hearing him tell random stories in class and having a tight knit class feeling. hm.. I've been accepted to a math & statistics program w/ funding near home so I wouldn't have to move anywhere which is nice, but idk, there are some good data science programs in the US which I'd like to attend, I've been anxious thinking about it. how does law education work in Australia? in North America it's something you only apply to after undergrad

I honestly don't remember, must have been the recommendation algorithm, but I've remembered it all this time cause it was the hardest I'd laughed in a long time, there's just nothing like that channel

ah, last time I mentioned I was taking a course with James Arthur on representation theory so I was bummed out that the course/school was cut short, it was a really small and informal class that was so much fun. In the end, I took the year off and plan on going to graduate school sometime this fall. I'm guessing it's been all online school for you?? how have you liked it? I've heard lots of mixed opinions on online courses

I have another week of holidays to go so I thought I'd ask - what are some good shows or movies to watch? I like most genres outside of horror so recommend whatever. :]

Five years ago, I bought a small orange and white furball from the pet store and called it Toast. Today, I lost the guinea pig I'd loved to old age and I'm throwing exam revision aside to come to terms with her loss.

She was sick over the past few days though she'd gotten better. We wrapped her in one of my old jumpers and my sister thought she's recover just fine.

Only after dinner was I told that she died. They buried her in the backyard and held a small funeral...

Hiya! I'm going to Europe for three weeks starting from the 11th till the 3rd next year so if I disappear off the face of the Earth, that's why. Anyhow, I'd like to ask if people would know some good places to visit where we're going?

We're going to the following cities, each for 3-5 days:

- London
- Paris
- Venice
- Rome
- Milan
- Zürich

We're already going to most of the iconic places (e.g. Eiffel Tower and Big Ben)...

Merry Christmas, guys! Enjoy your day, whether its filled with presents, turkey, spending a normal day at home or whatever. Have a good new year as well!

On a sidenote, me and my sister got an XBOX 360 today. If anyone has any recommendations for games to play (preferably multiplayer), then I'd love to hear them. So far we've got Halo 4, Tomb Raider, Fable III and something else that I can't remember the name of. We're terrible at all of them, honestly. XD
