Well, yeah. It was still the flavor everyone recommended between '05 and '09 to me as a teen who was most familiar with Windows.

There was also a time when it was the preferred flavor to recommend to people who just wanted to get their feet wet with Linux.

If it's still got a high usage rate, there's a chance Canonical didn't really seriously listen to the community.

I, uh, meant the number of installs of Ubuntu there are that are in use, not the size on disk.

It's unfortunately standard practice as many unscrupulous companies have taken advantage of such things in the past.

That probably depends on the size of their current install base.

A lot of companies are. They're just looking out for themselves and their bottom line first, so they can keep themselves employed and pay any investors and shareholders their dividends.

Nature of a publicly traded company, really.

I think Unity had just come out, actually.

I'd have to see what spare hardware I've got available to install stuff on.

AMD doesn't have the resources nVidia does because of a handful of things from the mid-2000s, one of those being the acquisition of ATI for $2 billion and then suffering from a bad reputation because of a bad run of Dell laptops using their chipsets in 2006-07.

They can't use PhysX because that's a tech nVidia patented and does not wish to license to AMD. Their high end cards are comparable in nearly every other way, though.

Apple's practices are why Microsoft got as big as it did. Hardware locking, it turns out, was not popular with consumers in the '80s and '90s.

My experience has mostly been with Ubuntu in school. That was serviceable, but kind of felt very bloated compared to vanilla Windows 7 at the time (back in 2010).

    I see then.

I'm not aware of how sketchy either of those companies can be... mind posting some sources on that?

Windows is the largest single PC market is pretty much why, and there's been this perception that PC gaming is dead or dying even though it isn't, which makes its way to shareholders with only a periphery knowledge of the industry, who then express their displeasure at money being "wasted" on PC development, let alone Linux or Mac development.

From the perspective of an IT tech, which is what I am by profession, it's less time consuming to just support a single OS that everyone has in their homes. Especially if they aren't given admin access to the machine.

One of the other reasons I have Windows at home is also so if I stumble upon any useful items, I can test them on my home PC and see if there's any way to scale them. I've learned plenty of Windows 7's less well known features this way. And that I just don't have the physical space to set up more than one PC (I've found that at home I tend to use the host for more things than the VM if I have a VM set up).

At some point I want to branch out into OS X and a handful of Linux distros, though.

That's completely understandable. If it was something like using Windows because of "gaming", then I would be a tad disappointed, but to each their own I suppose.
I can't help but feel disrespected as an individual who actually uses Windows for gaming and has it as one of my many reasons for using Windows on my home PC. My favorite games tend to not have Linux ports or even console ports.

If you ever get tired of XFCE, I would suggest you use LXDE, Openbox, or RazorQt personally.

What kind of tablet? Xubuntu is the best Buntu imo.
Hp pavillion x2. It runs a x5-z8300, which seems to work fine with some distros looking at other devices (intel sells a stick pc with the same processor that comes loaded with linux). While some distors like anything based on ubuntu 15.10 and any version of manjaro I've tried fail to boot or crash a few minutes into their use, others work but don't detect the battery and sound at all. Even remix os works, but with no sound or battery indicator.

Edit: I've found that some live cd's recognise the battery, but after installing them to the onboard storage stops the battery from being recognised.
