Anyway I'm off to do stuff. Bye.

(I'll probably post in the IC ... later? hopefully?)

The English subjunctive is essentially a purpose clause. It's most commonly used with verbs such as ask, request, urge, and so on as well as the that particle. There is sometimes no noticeable difference between the standard employment of a verb and its usage in the subjunctive, but sometimes there is:

    He [leaves] at once.
    vs
I demand that he [leave] at once.

Probably the most noticeable usage is in "... [were]" phrases like "if it were me" or similar; however, the irreverent sameness of the verb to be is simply be when used in the subjunctive, which is equally irregular. But regardless of what the specific case is, it's quite likely that a good portion of people will mess up in the construction of the subjunctive.

(Of course, you can cheat by substituting a should clause. That's what they do in the UK, I believe.)

Latin's subjunctive has a lot more use to it (for example in the hortatory / jussive / volitive cases as well as being required for potentiality), but that is a different animal altogether.

Latin is a very syntactic language, because tense / conjugation / how you decline a word can mean a world of difference... I'm a lot more keen on capturing grammatical details due to my time studying it (for example, the subjunctive tense in English, which gets ignored half the time nowadays). So yeah that's why ... Latin. : o

I feel sad that I'm not "most people" =(

(But actually it's probably because of Latin.)

Yeah, I saw that, but you can interpret differently as well! Because he uses pluperfect for the first statement (heavily implied past of past) and past imperfect for the second, and since the general tone of the post is that he's basically ignoring everyone, it's possible to think that "(the agent is that) he noticed a Bulbasaur [...] (during the occurrence of) having scouted the place [etc]", so it depends on how you look at it. It's always nice to give the benefit of the doubt!

Re: Cosmic Fury's post: Dunno if it says explicitly inside; semi-implies it, but.
