Yeah, my school had terrible picks in "educational" readings. The only book I actually liked was probably In The Heat of the Night, but because it was also a TV show I use to enjoy (they still have re-runs of it).

    HAHAHA, that was funny.

Meh, I tried reading 1984, but I got bored with it partway into the book. Knowing that it was a social commentary, I honestly couldn't finish it. I'm not trying to sound like a snobby critic, but I've come to disdain them that much... I had to force myself through Fahrenheit 451 and Animal Farm in high school because they were required readings for a couple different English classes.

*bellows like an old man laughing* Yeah, Fahrenheit 451 sucked. Well, most social commentaries suck. Nobody ever seems to know how to write them correctly, if there is a right way to write them at all.

Getting back on topic, genre fiction is generally harder to write than literary fiction because genre fiction actually requires you to write things within certain parameters to meet what the genre encompasses. Literary fiction is all character driven, so it emphasizes use of characters' actions to drive the plot rather than just external crises. If there was a truly hard genre to write in, it's definitely fantasy. It actually demands a lot of subtlety that other genres don't, especially when it comes to rationalizing how all sort of fantastic things can exist without confusing the reader.

Depends on the subject. There's a huge difference between space travel (like Star Trek/Wars) and biological engineering monsters (like Resident Evil, or my personal project Feral Twilight/Biohazard). The problem with sci-fi is that your ideas are there but people just don't get what they're about. If you ever read Fahrenheit 451, you'll understand (just kidding, it was just a horrible book).

Sci-fi is the easy one to get away with explanation in. Fantasy and realistic fiction are the hard ones. But the prologue isn't the place for it unless it's REALLY important info. Chapter one onward is where explanation should take place.

I understand completely. As a mod, it's too easy to make your standard THE standard. I actually restrained myself from saying what I wanted to, so you know. I wasn't trying to impose my method on a new writer. However, prologues aren't supposed to be blunt. They need something to happen to get people into the story, hence why I suggest writing them as such.

Eh, it's hard not to force viewpoints on people as a critic. But, I've taken a lot of crap for trying to be different as a writer. I know at least one guy who got a little PO'd when he found out that my prologues don't come into play until later in my stories, but he understood the reasoning for it since I try to give people a reason to keep reading by having a temporary cutoff point.

Going off of what Incinermyn said, I would have to disagree. All the prologue is doing is setting up the story. Incinermyn is right when he said that none of the main story action occurs in the prologue, but whether or not the prologue is an event is all up to the writer.
Well, my point as just that active narration is more important than passive narration in the prologue. I don't think I've ever read a good fanfic or story in general that blatantly explains everything right in the prologue. Usually, I consider it a bad sign because it normally means that the rest of the story is going to be written that same way... :/

Now that I'm officially in my post-good movie high, let's get started.

In case you don't know what Zootopia is about, and you can't watch the trailer, let me give a brief preview. All of the characters in this movie are anthropomorphic animals, meaning they can walk, talk, and do everything a human can do. So yeah, basically every disney movie, but that's besides the point. Zootopia is this big city where all of the animals...

Man, it's been a while since I've done a movie review, far too long. So, when my roommates invited me to go see The Boy with them, of course I tagged along.

The Boy is directed by William Brent Bell and stars Lauren Cohan in the main role. In case you haven't seen the trailer, a nanny, Greta, is called to this old english house so that she can watch over the old couple's son while they take a vacation. The main plot conflict...

M. Night Shyamalan brings us yet another horror flick, but this one is a little different.

I must admit, when I saw the trailer for this film I wasn't expecting much. Here comes yet another found footage horror film to throw into the pile, lost and forgotten with all of the other cheaply made films studios pump out for a quick buck. At least, that's what I thought until I did some more digging. M. Night Shyamalan actually...

This movie is gory, doesn't make sense, over the top, and mindless action. So why did I enjoy it?

I must say, I was really surprised by American Ultra. I went in expecting mindless action with really cheap comedy, and that's actually exactly what I got. But don't worry, there's a lot more to it. The very things I went in to see took a backseat to a story with a surprising amount of heart and characters that weren't drones...

If you thought the first Sinister was messed up, hold on to your sanity, because you haven't seen anything yet.

WARNING: GRAPHIC SCENES AND VIOLENCE:

For the record, I thought the first movie was decent. It at least tried to break from the traditional hollywood jumpscare routine by giving us interesting-ish characters and a plot that wasn't bad. This movie is pretty much the same, only it cranks up the demonic...
