October 19th, 2016 7:18 PMMateoProbably should've linked to the PPGZ versions of the RRB. I mentioned them because Adventures!Lance makes me think of Brick pretending to be Lance: some short, bug-eyed little **** who thinks he's a total badass and hotshot but is nothing more than a wannabe chump.Ah, yeah, I can see the resemblance more with the PPGZ version. I haven't seen that incarnation of PPG so I wasn't familiar with anything but their original looks and all.
I'm imagining a scene where game/anime Lance encounters this creature, takes one look at him, and falls to the floor laughing, while his short little ass angrily stomps around proclaiming that he's the "World's Greatest Dragon Master." The real Lance, then, sends Dragonite out and sweeps his entire team, causing the Adventures creature to throw a hissy fit like the little kid he is.
As for the scene you described, that would probably be both hilarious and annoying at the same time, lol.
That's good to know. I like how you're finding better ways to make use of the games' memory than GF originally did.Trying to! In fact, the Trainer's Eyes could function similar to the Pokédex come to think of it. Scroll through a list of names, choose one, and you can see their: location, info, rematch status, etc. It would be different options of course but it would be intuitive to use, and probably easier to code since I'd have a reference.
One of the biggest problems with Alola Vulpix/Ninetales and all the other "Alola Forms" is that they could've easily been (and should've been) new Pokémon instead.Exactly. Even if they look cool sometimes, those are pretty much always lazy when fan games do them, but at least they are somewhat excusable there. It's often easier to just recolor and slightly edit an existing sprite than it is to make a new one, so it usually looks more consistent if they do that when they can't sprite new ones. But in Gamefreak's case, there really is no excuse to do that and treat them like new Pokémon. In a way, it's not too different from Pokémon like Rotom that have forms with different typings and skill sets and whatnot, but since you can't swap back and forth, these aren't really the same thing at all.
Think about it, if this feature had been applied to past gens, we would've simply gotten "Johto Growlithe" instead of Houndour, "Unova Ursaring" instead of Beartic, and "Kalos Pidgeot" instead of Talonflame. Over half the Hoenn and Unova Pokédexes would cease to exist!
You can't just take a completely different Pokémon with a completely different type/movepool/stats and slap the name "Ninetales" or "Marowak" on it. These Pokémon's' original typings were not given to them out of random, and you can't completely change them into something they aren't and still expect us to see them as the same Pokémon.
And, it smacks of laziness, too. Was GF really that out of ideas that they had to resort to recoloring Sandslash instead of making a new Ice/Steel Pokémon? People have been accusing GF of being "out of ideas" for several years now, and these "Alola Forms" don't exactly help their case.
And, after learning that there are fewer than 80 new Pokémon (yet again), it's pretty clear that these "Alola Forms" ARE taking up slots that could've gone to new Pokémon instead. In fact, I also read that Alola's Regional Dex actually contains more Gen 1 Pokémon than it does new Pokémon!
Really, everything about Gen 7 smacks of laziness and poor decisions. Even the Alola region itself just feels like a rewarmed Orange Islands or Hoenn, even with the "Island Trials" and all that stuff. Extremely boring for a so-called "20th Anniversary" release. -
October 18th, 2016 10:12 PMMateoThanks to anonymity, the internet has a tendency to attract people like that, unfortunately. I can name countless other people from all sorts of fandoms who have had similar issues and acted like this.Oh I know. The internet is full of people like that, and full of trolls too. Being anonymous (or presuming you are anonymous) has its benefits but it goes to a lot of people's heads.
LOL!That kid looks like a Digimon trainer who thinks he's a badass and wants to be Lance, but really needs to have his ego taken down a peg or two. I guess I don't see the Rowdyruff Boy influence much, though. Probably because its so different from PPG art style (and I knew who they were even without the link :p) but idk. Either way, he still looks like a chump for sure. That's no way to depict one of the most elite trainers in the Kanto region.
As if I needed more reasons to hate Adventures, even the art style really annoys me. Everyone seems to have this short, bug-eyed look, and many characters don't even resemble their game appearances (so much for that rag being "canon," LOL).
If anime Lance seemed too young-looking to you, then that creature calling himself "Lance" in Adventures must look WAY too young:
Is that Lance or an emo Rowdyruff Boy wearing a cape? Seriously, he looks like a damn 13-14 year old!
(What I would give to see game or anime Lance kick that impostor's ass and how him what a real Dragon Master looks like...)
Hopefully, we'd also be able to store more than 10 numbers. That probably annoyed me the most about GSC's Pokégear.Yeah, it'd hold more than 10 numbers. I figure I'd make sure it could hold as many numbers as I planned on making available. And instead of doing it the Gen 2 way where it took a whole byte to store each phone number ID, I'd probably try to just do it as a flag array of registered numbers, so 1 bit per registered number instead of 1 byte, meaning the same amount of space it took to store 10 numbers in GSC would hold like 80. That's what I was planning to do with the TM Case too, for the same reason (making everything available while saving space in memory).
All I can say is *thumbs up*I'm not gonna lie, I don't like absolutely hate Gen 7 or anything. It isn't really Dark Rising levels of wrongness from what I can tell. But it is very "meh" to me. It just doesn't feel right, so I don't really care about it. I don't think it was the way to go as we've already made clear, and I hope it does poorly enough that they decide to go back to the old formula, but at least a few things seem ok. Alola Vulpix/Ninetails are cool *rimshot* Jokes aside though, yeah, a lot of the changes seem really dumb and out of place.
At this point, I've come to accept that Gen 7 doesn't offer a single thing I'm interested in. I don't really like any of the new Pokémon, and I outright despise the concept of "Alola Forms." And, the Alola region itself is just a rewarmed Orange Islands/Hoenn except with what will likely be a really awful story.
I also kind of hate this "Z Move" stuff, if only because it's revealed Mega Evolution to be nothing more than a cheap, one-time gimmick rather than something GF genuinely wanted to be a part of the franchise. Since so much of Gen 6 revolved around Megas, all it does is make the gen look like a waste of time in retrospect. It also makes it far harder to get excited over "Z Moves," since GF will likely dump them in the same way once Gen 8 rolls around.
With Gen 7, the main series games have completely lost me. Hacks are where it's at, and luckily there are several great ones in development. And, they actually feel like Pokémon games, unlike Sun/Moon. -
October 18th, 2016 6:58 AMMateoWill reply when I get the chance, probably after work, but it might end up being late tonight instead, since I probably won't be home much tonight except for late. Just letting you know! -
October 17th, 2016 7:10 PMMateoAlso, thought this thread and my response might amuse you: https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonROMhacks/comments/580v9c/is_anyone_more_excited_for_a_rom_hack_than_sun/ -
October 17th, 2016 7:05 PMMateoIt's all about attention. He wanted people to notice him and his ****ty hack, so he acted like an asshole to everyone and then made up this sob, overdramatic story and painted himself as this poor, pitiful victim so people would feel sorry for him and make excuses for his behavior.Yep, exactly. It makes some people give you a pity party and others get pissed at you, neither of which are actually what you want in that situation. smh. It's sad, really. Not for the reasons he wants it to be, but just that people are like that.
I don't doubt that he's probably a very lonely person in RL, but this isn't the way to get attention and make friends.
Tell me about it.For whatever reason, I was reminded of that scene in The Sound of Music when one character says "We're all Austrian." and another replies, "Some think we ought to be German, and they're very mad at those who don't." Just replace the word "Austrian" with "Pokemon stories" and "German" with "Game Canon". Yes, I guess that does mean I'm comparing Adventures fanboys to Nazis. Oops.
Just the fact that they constantly call their favorite rag "The Manga," as if it's the one and only official Pokémon manga and not just one out of a zillion, annoys me to death.
And, no, Adventures isn't game canon, either. Like, nowhere close to it. Red doesn't own a Poliwhirl, Sabrina isn't a Team Rocket member, and Lance isn't some bloodthirsty emo villain. Stop trying to pretend that this crappy, wannabe edgy fanfic has anything to do with the universe of the games.
That would work. Could you make it so we could get Gym Leader numbers, too?Yep, I figured I would let you register leaders that way, too. The Trainer's Eyes let you store them, but you had to rematch them differently if I remember. I'd just let that work the same way as normal trainers do. I would also extend that to special trainers, such as: Flannery, Janine, Tracey, etc. -
October 17th, 2016 4:54 PMMateoDug up another whining wall of text from Aethestode:Yeah, he really needed to get a grip. At the very start of the post, I was thinking "Ok, I feel you there. I do the same thing. I watch LPs and stuff, interact with people, find out what is working and what isn't, see what players actually want, and try to improve my hacks that way". But then it took a nosedive off the deep end, and my sense of relating to him went out the window. When I've had comments on my own videos that are obviously trolling, I just delete them and move on with my life. And I've never really gotten them on other people's videos, but I would behave myself better than he did. Like you say, even if the illness and death are real, they aren't an excuse to lash out at people on the internet. Excuses for disappearing or a lack of updates? Absolutely. An excuse for being a tool? Negatory, Ghost Rider. I know I've made some small outbursts from time to time over the years when I was stressed and frustrated, which I then genuinely felt bad about and apologized. But I can't understand how people like him go about the way they do. But there are several hackers like him around. They can't seem to take even very softly worded constructive criticism without having a fit.
-snip because wow-
Dude really needed to get a grip. Even if he really did get sick and all of that, you can tell that he was exaggerating and bull****ting a lot of it just to make people feel sorry for him. I automatically lose respect for anyone who tries to use an illness or death (real or not) as an excuse to get away with bad behavior.
And, while YouTube comments sections have a reputation, what do you wanna bet that a lot of the "bashing" there was really just valid criticism of his poorly-made hack? I mean, what do you think people are going to say when you throw together a crappy game and try to pass it off as good? Aethestode really needed to learn how to listen to criticism and not take everything so personally.
Because, apparently landing in the Top 3 for three years in a row (2013, 2014, 2015) isn't good enough for them."It only won because he's a moderator, look at this hack, it only uses Gen 3 tiles and has a normal Pokemon storyline with gyms and stuff". Aka, the type of hack we need more of, instead of trash like Dark Rising and Adventure Red. Adventures fans are so annoying. I was on Facebook earlier looking at this post showing the stuff you'd need to cosplay Hilda for Halloween, and of course people in the comments are all "Actually, her name is Black, get it right" or "She's REALLY called Black, read the Manga" and I didn't waste my time commenting, but all I could think was "Ugg, get a grip people. What is your life about right now?"
If HOTY is "rigged," it's clearly working in Adventure Red's favor, not the other way around.
Yeah, if the VS Seeker can't be done, then the Trainer's Eyes is a good compromise. The FRLG VS Seeker was really intended to be a replacement for a phone system anyways (since the original RBY didn't have a phone, so GF didn't want to give you a Pokégear in FRLG).I feel like maybe a combination of the two could be useful. Like, you see rematches like the Trainer's Eyes. Go into the menu, and the names will have a ! next to them if they want a rematch, and clicking a name will let you see where the trainer is and stuff. It might even have options like, "Info" "Call" "Delete" or something. That way you could remove names, call them if that was somehow relevant or you were bored, or just see their info to remember where they were. -
October 15th, 2016 9:58 PMMateoI cited Tara Gilesbie because Aethestode's goodbye post reminded me SO much of her whiny, overdramatic author's notes. He kept going on about having had to go to the hospital and having "declining health" just like she kept going on about how she cuts herself, and you could obviously tell that they were faking it to gain sympathy points.I'm not going to lie and say I kept up with the thread for his hack well enough to follow along with his "declining health" but I've seen other users do the same thing. I wanna say an annoying user on skeetendo (who like... didn't even hack, he just bugged people to finish theirs) claimed he was dying of cancer or something in an effort to get attention, then left, then came back, then got banned, then made a new user account. It was a mess. Attention whores need to get a grip, especially when they start doing things like those people.
Of course, it makes total sense when you realize that hacks like Adventure Red are basically the video game equivalent of fanfics like My Immortal, the painful, cringeworthy creations of lonely teenagers with access to a computer and too much time on their hands.
That is pretty amazing that Gaia managed to win HOTY. Maybe there are more people here than we think who want quality games and are tired of the same ****ty fanfic hacks thrown together by clueless 16 year olds.Adventures fanboys tried to claim HOTY was rigged if I remember. "This only won because it's by Spherical Ice, Adventure Red: Red Chapter CLEARLY should be HOTY" and stuff like that. Smh.
A VS Seeker would rock! It's one of the few things I really liked about FRLG and would love to see in RBY/GSC hacks. Much better than GSC's phone rematches, which were way too random.Having it function like the VS Seeker would probably be too much of a pain, what with all the jumping sprites and everyone getting some sort of speech bubble over their heads. Not sure the GBC would actually handle that many sprites on screen at once in some of the more densely packed routes. It would probably function more like the "Trainer's Eyes" part of the Pokénav from RSE. It would have a list of trainers that could be rematched, would give info about them, and would alert you when they wanted one. And unlike RSE, it would let you rematch Gym Leaders instead of just giving info on them. I'm already thinking the cameo trainers like Flannery and Janine and Tracey and whatnot will end up with rematches. -
October 15th, 2016 3:35 PMMateoThis one sentence especially made me howl: "This hack will surely be an Hit For Life. A Hack that Lives until next Generations of Teenagers." Adventures fans really ARE a just bunch of whiny emo teens! When he posted that on Reddit, I almost replied "Good, don't let the door hit you on the way out." but I decided not to be an asshole, since I feel the need to be at least semi-professional these days. If he'd posted that when I was in like, I don't know, high school, I probably would've gone for it. But since I'm one of the few old members left in the community, I'd just be confirming his and others' claims about "elitism" and whatnot. Plus, I'd look like a jerk and possibly push away people who might otherwise be interested in my hacks, lol.
I did some Googling and found Aethestode's Reddit thread. His extremely whiny goodbye post is similarly hilarious:
In recent years, hacking this game has not been fun anymore. I have people wishing that I would die on PM and people harassing me through Youtube, Email and Pokemon Community. The last straw was a person insulting me and the Pokemon Community Mod punishing me for defending myself. Cbf.
Edit: I just honestly can't be **** anymore. I work and work tirelessly on a project adding things players want. A guy came in and insult me, call me a tyrant and say I don't listen to people. As a person who went to the hospital twice and still tried his best to work on the hack would obvious get upset and defend himself by saying how he's not a tyrant. The mod then came and deleted my comment and said I'm being and disrespectful because I used the word "I don't want to **** out crappy quality work"
Obviously, I angrily messaged the mod asking how on earth does my comment considered rude and disrespectful while the other guy's one is completely fine and left intact. I even explained to him that the word "****" wasn't even used as an insult at all. That mod simply claimed "the other guy was just joking and that the higher up gave him the power to judge as he please". So **** it.
Edit 2: No, the guy who insulted me have his original post left intact. According to Spherical Ice, "he (Spherical Ice)" sees it as a joke and funny so it doesn't warrant a delete. Go figured.
The hilarious thing is that when I appealed one of the mod even claimed that the guy's insulting comment could have warranted a deletion. However, because I'm already banned, he's not going to do anything.
Edit 3: I honestly don't want to work on it. Hacking the game hasn't been fun for a while but I was willing to push on. This whole incident just left a sour taste in my mouth. Looking at the hack would just make me remember the negative stigma.
Fun fact: I remember there was a time (few times actually) in Beta 11 where Spherical Ice sent me a message telling me to remove a certain content from the game because it upsets him. I tried arguing with him and say no, I won't remove it. However, he threatened to delete my hack/or ban me (I don't remember which one), so I simply obeyed and deleted the content.
Final Edit: Anyway, I'm done. Please don't send me email asking me to change my mind anymore. If ever in the far far future I want to continue the hack then I'll definitely let people know.
So Bobnbill posted about me creating a second account. Interesting that he posted me arguing with the mod (the part that paints me in the negative light), but completely neglect to state the reasons on why I've created the second account (which I CLEARLY wrote and him acknowledging the post himself). Anyway, the reason why I've created the second account was to put one final note on my Pokemon Adventure Red Chapter thread (since I couldn't do so in the first one). I didn't want to wait 2 weeks to post it since the community has already such a negative memories for me (partly due to the mods). Going there just brings so much bad memories. I've even requested for the mod to help me write a final note on my thread, but they simply ignored my post. Therefore, I find it funny that "Bobnbill" chose to not mention the reason why I created the second account or the mentioning of me asking the mod to put final note on my thread for me. I guess they're scrambling to make me the bad guy.
The final note that I would have written would've been something like this:
"Thank you for all your supports in the past 3 years. I first started as a diehard Pokemon fan who got interested in hacking due to Pokemon Shinygold and Pokemon Naranja. My hack first started out as very simple and amateurish. I would have never imagined it to get so much attention. I've definitely never imagined that it'll get in Hack of the Year rounds. All this was thanks for all you loyal supporters. I had some great and fun times making the hack and seeing people enjoy it definitely made it worthwhile. I don't get care about awards or money. People who had followed me from day 1 knows that from the very beginning that I stated that I don't care about the Hack of the Year bs at all. Anyway, unfortunately, I think it is time for me to end the hack. I know I've promised so many contents and I do feel bad for not delivering it. However, I just can't take it anymore. Aside from my declining health and busy schedule, recently my hacks been garnering a lot of trolls. I have people attacking me on Youtube. I have people sending me message praying that my family and I would die. I have people making fun and gleeing at every turmoil in my life (e.g. losing my dear friend, me going to the hospital twice, my health declining dramatically, etc). I also have people stressing me to hurry the hack and then attacking me when I postponed it. The constant attacks left me so afraid of reading my emails regarding the game or reading my own PM (that's why I tell people not to send me PM). People sees me as a person who loses my temper very easily. However, if you go through the amount of crap I have to go through, you'll probably lose your mind as well. I've tried ignored so many things, but there's a limit on how much a person can take. Anyway, even with all this, I've tried to push through, but the incident with the mods is definitely the last straw. Anyway, thank you for your support in the last 3 years. Good bye"
Looks like Tara Gilesbie has a match!
On the My Immortal comment, can't say I ever read that (Although I'm familiar with the Evanescence song of the same name), but I know her type. I'm pretty sure my fanfics from highschool were more coherently written than THAT. xD
Well, Gen 3's far more doable right now... Which is sadly why Gen 3 hacking has become associated with crappy fangames made by emo teens with too much time on their hands. FireRed has become easy as dirt to hack.Yeah, I know I'm at odds with the majority on that. Some people will only play hacks with ugly Gen 4 rips, but those are one of my huge pet peeves, and an almost instant thread-closer. The fact that Gaia won HOTY gave me hope for Sterling Silver. Both use a mixture of vanilla Gen 3 tiles and custom-but-Gen-3-style tiles, and both focus on exploration and the lore of the region, along with Archaeology (and SS was always going to be that way). While the story, region, etc are all different enough that nobody can call it a Ripoff (and Spherical Ice loves the idea), I feel like there is just enough similarity that when it comes out, people might end up being like "So I played Gaia, what should I play next?" and people tell them "Try Sterling Silver: Cry of Celebi by Mateo and Pyro. It's got some similarities but its still a totally new game." or whatever. That's still a long way off, though :p
You're definitely in the minority for loving vanilla FireRed tiles. Most hacks I see try to use Gen 4/5 devamps, which often don't turn out well.
I think they will. Gym Leader/E4 rematches are something that should've been in the games right from the start.Speaking of rematches and things that were in from the start, I'm not sure what I should do in terms of rematching generic trainers. I want to include the functionality, since there will be a Pokégear clone. However, I know that phone calls were pretty annoying with the way Gen 2 handled them. Part of me wants to like... only include phone calls for things like rematches, without the random "Oh hi Nicole, it's Joey! My Rattata is doing sooo great! I fought a tough Pidgey today. See ya!" or whatever. My other idea is to like... have a VS Seeker option in the Pokegear, and it would just show an ! point next to a trainer's name if they were able to be rematched, and make it so clicking their name showed their trainer sprite and a little blurb about the trainer and where they are. What are your thoughts on that? -
October 14th, 2016 7:53 PMMateoI guess a lot of these teens lack the skills to even throw together a crappy FireRed hack.Haha, yeah, I stopped by his profile one day and saw some rather interesting stuff, don't think I saw that one in particular though, lmao. I know the thread on Reddit where he declared that he was quitting was full of similar things. Adventures fans will do anything to get their fix, won't they?
If you want some comedy gold, get a load of the comments left on Aethestode's profile. This one especially got me LOL-ing:
Hey sir? Zzup? I know i'll just annoy you but still here tryin to convince you to continue this BEST HACK EVER. GODBLESS SIR!!!!! - The Creator Of The Best And Biggest Hack EVER!!!!
From: A Little Fan.
I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried!
Well, if you're going to move past RBY/GSC, why not try HGSS instead of hopping on the Gen 3 bandwagon? At least it would be something different.I probably will try HGSS at some point. But for now, I am still planning to move on to Gen 3. It's a lot better documented now than back in the day, and to be honest, I've always liked the look of FireRed style graphics anyway, and you can't really do that in a HGSS hack. But I will look into it at some point. I've actually already got some sort of map editor downloaded, I just haven't played around with it enough to figure it out yet.
This is a scenario where I've always felt that a strong dose of Gameplay and Story Segregation needed to be applied. While it would make perfect sense for the Kanto gyms to be weaker than the E4, storywise, it's awful from a gameplay perspective. Of course, as you said, having E4 rematches hekps fix this dilemma.Yeah, you're exactly right. While it made sense from a story perspective, it made the second half of the game feel rather pointless. I'm hoping the rematches with the E4 come across as well as I want them to (both in Christmas and Red++). -
October 14th, 2016 3:19 PMFotomacAnyway, what would you think of an edit of one of your sprites appearing in my hack, Pokémon Tri-Color Nostalgia Series? (I'm thinking of including it beginning in the next nightly build if that's OK with you.)
-
October 14th, 2016 9:45 AMMateoTrue, fair enough, but I hate to leave people hanging either. Sorry for not saying I was busy earlier. -
October 14th, 2016 7:18 AMMateoJust been busier with real life the last day or two. I'll make sure to reply after work today though! -
October 12th, 2016 10:04 PMMateoYeah, I hear you on all of those, especially Adventure Red. Seeing as the source material itself is already wannabe edgy trash with terrible character designs, it lends itself very easily to crappy fanfic hacks.AS many fanboys as the manga has, I'm surprised there aren't even more Adventures-based hacks than there already are. I know there's also a Green chapter and some stuff too, but I haven't actively gone looking to see just how deep that rabbit hole goes.
What makes Adventure Red even worse, though, is that even though the creator claims that his game "follows the manga closely," he put the Orange Islands in his hack!
As bad as Adventure Red is, though, the sequels are arguably worse. Adventure Yellow is not only based on one of the very worst chapters of the manga (aka. the one that ruined one of my favorite characters by turning him into some hateful emo villain), but the ****ty hack of it also includes pointless fake types and hideous fake Megas.
Since the Yellow chapter is uniquely awful, this of course means that there's another, completely unrelated hack of it. Uggggggghh.
Yeah, Gen 3 hacking really took off fast and is still very dominant. Of course, this is mostly because Gen 3's the only Gen that's old enough to be easily hackable, yet still have full color and the modern stat system. Hacking Gen 4+ requires 3D mapping skills, and those games also have more DRM to work around.I've actually thought about looking into Gen 4 hacking. Unlike, well, anyone else that I know of in the romhacking community, I used to make cars for Need for Speed 3 and 4 before I found out about roms and hacking, so I actually already have some experience with 3D modeling (albeit modeling very different things a long time ago) but it makes me think it's something I could pick up if I got around to it, whereas everyone else around here looks at it like "oh 3d, that's impossible, we do tiles here" and stuff. Maybe I'll remake Christmas as a HGSS hack in a handful of years lmao.
It seems that they wanted to keep the Kanto Gym Leaders (except Blue) all lower-leveled than Lance for story reasons. Luckily, even GF themselves figured out that this was a bad idea, so they all got a level boost in HGSS, which also added Gym Leader and E4 rematches. That's the only reason I can think of that makes sense, anyway. But regardless of the reason, glad they tried to remedy it in the remakes. And in Christmas, I'm also planning to make sure the Kanto leaders increase in level from the original matches with the E4, then have a battle with stronger E4 teams after you have all 16 badges. Sort of playing off of the idea they used in Origins, where Brock looked to see how many badges Red already had and chose the team for the match accordingly. I thought that was a very reasonable in-universe explanation for why the difficulty would increase as if everyone started from Pallet Town. It lets you assume that all leaders are pretty strong, and choose according to their opponent, and it still lets the E4 be stronger than the Kanto leaders in reality, while letting the Kanto leaders be tougher than the first time you face the E4. -
October 10th, 2016 2:40 PMMateoWhat are some of the hacks that made you goLet's see...
the most?
- Any of the Dark Rising hacks, for sure. The fact that there are more than one of them blows my mind. The art is terrible, the storyline sounds like a 12 year old emo kid's wannabe-edgy diary, the level curve is, from what I've heard, absolute trash, etc.
- Adventure Red: Red Chapter [Aethesode] or whatever the official name for that garbage is. It's based on the Adventures manga, so of course I have no interest in the story, and everything about it seems poorly implemented. Plus the creator is just super cringe with the way he handles everything related to the hack and to even constructive criticism. I saw he posted on Reddit that he was leaving Pokecommunity and/or abandoning his hack, and I had to metaphorically hold my tongue to avoid replying with grumpy cat saying "Good" lol.
- Snakewood. While the idea of a post-apocalyptic Pokemon hack sounded promising, looking through the thread, I immediately said "Nope". The story is, again, wannabe edgy instead of well thought out. The fakemon/zombiemons/etc are all lousy edits with no effort put into them. I saw one screenshot that was like... the player up against a frankensteined 2 headed Latios/Latias hybrid, and I was like "...what?"
- Not really the same, but I initially was that way with Glazed. I saw the hack was called "Pokemon Glazed", read far enough to see that the region name was the word "Donut" spelled backwards, and stopped reading. Later I accidentally stumbled on an LP of it on Youtube and thought, "Hmm, maybe this does deserve a chance after all". I still haven't played it yet, and I'm not a fan of the way it uses Gen 4 map tiles (Gen 4 tiles shoddily ripped and shoved into Gen 3 is one of my pet peeves), but I probably will at least try it before I decide if it's crap or not -- unlike the others, which I have no interest in even going back to the threads, let alone downloading them.
I think I cared way too much about looking "cool" and being popular in middle school.I got that way more in highschool. I was more myself around my friends still, but I would also act totally different in other areas to try and fit in and stuff with the popular kids, because I was tired of getting picked on too much. Looking back, that was stupid as hell, but it's what I did. I don't have a DeLorean or a TARDIS so I can't go back and change it now haha.
Forget WaterBlue, many people actually thought ThunderYellow was going to be made (especially after FRLG didn't include anything from Yellow).
And I remember people thinking that ThunderYellow would be a third version after FrLg. I also remember when the games hadn't been announced in English yet, and people called it "Grass Green" online, too. We only had a few screenshots of it, and people were already trying to expand that into full tilesets for RPGMaker and using the tiles in Ruby hacks (back when Gen 3 hacking was in its infancy and most of us were still hacking Gen 1 and 2. It still absolutely blows my mind how seemingly overnight we went from knowing absolutely nothing about hacking Gen 3 to having Map, Script, and other editors (none of which are still used, since there are better ones now of course). We had script editors for Gen 3 years before we had one for Gen 2. And for a long time, the Germans knew a lot more about hacking Gen 2 than we did for some reason. Heck, I still use an old Town Map editor for the German versions of GSC to export the tilemaps for like the town map and other stuff for Red++. But I'm getting off topic. Sorry!
GSC were horrible for grinding, in general. The E4 only went up to L50, and the highest leveled wild Pokémon topped out in the high 40s. Why couldn't Mt. Silver have had levels more like Cerulean Cave?I can understand the E4 being low, since it was only halfway through the game. But I don't understand why Kanto's trainers didn't get any stronger, and there wasn't a way to rematch the E4 with a stronger team when you had all 16 badges, to help train for Red.
Well, the Kris sprite didn't exist in GS. However, it's strange that that she still looked like Gold in Crystal.Obviously Kris wasn't in Gold and Silver :p But yeah, I meant it was weird that she still looked like Gold in Crystal.
Glad to hear that Red++ isn't going to have any issues like that.
