IIRC the new Pokémon in GSC were advertised as "newly discovered", so it made sense that traditions were built around old ones like Bellsprout.

Another gen where this happened more or less was 4th gen. If you didn't bother with Honey, you wouldn't be able to catch and use things like Wormadam and Vespiquen. Munchlax itself was an obscenely rare Honey encounter. 4th gen was another gen which was a continuation of the old ones.

But there isn't much bad about it. Sometimes you need to work to find and use certain things. Granted, Mothim sucked because it was an easy Honey encounter, but other things make sense to be difficult to find. Of course, if you try to catch a Yanma with Speed Boost in the Great Marsh you'll need a full day and a lot of luck, which is a bit exaggerated.

I accept that, if something is rare, it better be powerful, but back then the focus was more on collecting and less on competitive battling, as you've exaustively said. This is not only a 2nd gen thing, though. In 1st gen I think the only trainer who used Jynx was Lorelei. I don't remember anyone using Magmar and Electabuzz, and only one or two trainers used Mr.Mime.

I really think they were made hard to find on purpose. Only the devs could answer this question. Pokémon like Yanma and Dunsparce were more meant as collectibles than battling monsters, it seems, considering they're obscenely rare outside of swarms and aren't very strong.

There are a lot of Pokémon in GSC you won't ever see outside of wild encounters (Heracross, Skarmory), and another few which require you to catch and evolve them (Ampharos, Scizor, Tyranitar). This can't have been a random thing. It may have been something to reward exploration and curiosity.

I don't know about you, but it annoys me to heck how so few Johto gym leaders actually used Gen 2 Pokémon. Weren't GSC supposed to be promoting the new Pokémon? I can see why they invented Regional Dexes in RS; it forced the games to give more of the spotlight to the new Pokémon.
Don't half of them use Johto Pokémon? Whitney, Jasmine, Pryce and Clair all use new Pokémon.

I think you were meant to work harder to get a few Pokémon. Larvitar, for example, I'm almost sure it was conceived as a "reward".

About RS, it was sort of a reboot so they filled Hoenn with new Pokémon with only a select few oldies.

Yeah, I see what you mean about Falkner being a bird trainer instead of a Flying trainer. All of his underlings are Bird Keepers, and he refers to himself as a "bird master" in his in-game dialog. Luckily, he has plenty of birds to choose from out of Gens 1-2, although I wish GF had given him more than just the Pidgey line. Why couldn't he have had a Spearow, Hoothoot, or even Natu instead of the L7 Pidgey?
The Sages in the Bellsprout Tower used Hoothoot instead.

Well, if Falkner's levels were higher, he could've had a Hoothoot with Hypnosis and Mud-Slap.

Also, I couldn't possibly think DP are the best Pokémon games. Maybe Platinum, but not DP. DP's saving grace is being able to use Murkrow and Misdreavus.

Well, considering I haven't even played ORAS yet, I'm probably in that "I don't care what they do now" mode. Same for the anime. A big reason why I like Falkner is that he's the bird trainer (he's not a Flying-type specialist, he's a bird trainer) and wields my favorite bird too. And his episode was epic!

Origins was too short and had dodgy art IMO.

The parallel universe situation was a Mortal Kombat (2011) thing. In that franchise they made a game with all of the MK cast and killed them all, then they rebooted the franchise, which IMO was an excuse to avoid dealing with 3D era characters which were poorly received (like Hsu Hao and the Black Dragon underlings) and to use the characters everyone liked.

Not that. I used Yellow to get the 1st gen legendaries for my Crystal save. I was using the Crystal save in Stadium 2 on PJ64, so it wasn't necessary for me to play through Yellow more than once.

You assume a lot about me, I wonder what else you think of my Pokémon tastes. :P That's not always a good thing, because it leads to misunderstanding.

Technically she sucks because the Game Boy AI sucks. :P So everyone sucks.

Fire wasn't good but I saw it as one of the "main" types so I used it often.

Well it's been nearly a decade since I played Yellow and I remember nothing about that playthrough since it wasn't particularly memorable and I used the speed button a lot.

Who's saying nobody used Fire back then? I USED FIRE. Me. Moi. {XD} I always had a Fire-type handy.

I had no idea what people used elsewhere but here I used similar types to Blue because it felt "just right".

I could swear I cruised by Lorelei in Yellow, though (I did beat it once), and I wasn't overleveled...

Only in FRLG. The split Special stat, revised type chart, and nerfed Blizzard weakened her Pokémon a lot. The fact that they were knocked down two levels didn't help, either. Rather hilariously, her rematch team may have actually been a step down from her first one, because Piloswine is 1000x weaker than Slowbro. (Too bad Mamoswine and the P/S Split didn't exist yet.) No wonder her character has been forgotten...
She never gave me trouble apart from the very first time when my strongest Pokémon was a L42 Sandslash. Four Pokémon vulnerable to Electric attacks and another not so stellar Ice-type which dies to Fire aren't THAT strong. Lapras however could sponge hits and hit back with Blizzard, but you also had the benefit of better Defense back then.

She could've been harder with better movesets, though.

That's pretty much the story of every single Ice specialist, save for Lorelei in RBY (the lone Gen where Ice didn't suck). How sad was it that Candice was actually harder in DP simply because she had a Medicham.
LOL Candice destroyed me the first time. I had no answer to Froslass. And she actually uses strategy. Abomasnow sets up Hail for Froslass who uses DT to increase her evasion (along with Snow Cloak) and bombs you with 100% accurate Blizzard. She also has Psychic for dealing with Infernape.

Candice in Platinum was actually pretty good.

The fact that GF had Wulfric say that indicates that they really do realize how weak Ice is as a type, which makes it all the more obvious that they see the type as fundamentally broken beyond repair. So, why do they continue to make Ice types so rare/late-game or have every Ice specialist be either a late Gym Leader or an E4 Member? Wulfric was supposed to be the hardest Gym Leader of his region, yet because he was Ice type, he was anything but.
The problem is that Avalugg is a turd. Dies to anything Special and doesn't have enough resistances to take advantage of its Defense. It's an Ice-type Golem. Not the brightest idea from GF.

And Lorelei isn't that difficult either. Lapras is difficult. The rest, not so much.

Wulfric: Depending on which Pokémon you have, I could be the easiest or the hardest leader!
    Me: Charizard 6-0. :P

The bugs from 5th gen aren't that great, though. Only Volcarona is stupidly powerful.

Wow, you never see that, people wanting to install Windows on a Mac.

There actually are Mac versions of the Sims games, but from my experiences in Sims 1 fandom (not sure how it is with Sims 2), there are far fewer creating programs for Mac users than there are for Windows ones. Windows users get access to The Sims Transmogrifier (for cloning and creating objects), Rug-O-Matic (for cloning and creating rugs), SimEnhancer 3D (for changing Sims' looks and traits), SE Object Manager (for organizing and categorizing objects), IFF Pencil 2 (editor for object files), FAR Out (extracts the FAR files that come with the game), FAR Extractor (another FAR editor), Sim Wardrobe (another Sim modifier), and a bunch of others. Mac users, on the other hand, get IFF Snooper (an IFF editor) and FAR Sight (a FAR extractor), and that's it.
Actually, in my experience, it's just as common (if not moreso) for people to have a Mac that dualboots Windows and OSX as it is for someone with a PC to want to make a Hackintosh. Bootcamp is software that Apple ships with OSX specifically to make it easier for people to do that. Which I told JD means "Apple knows you'll have to put Windows on there to actually do anything useful with it, so they went ahead and made it easy for you." lol.

I know there are Mac versions of the game, but I only have the PC versions and that was where he was getting the install disks for the games from. And I had an XP install disk lying around and spare product codes, so that actually seemed simpler haha. But like you say, the PC community has far more support in terms of modding. That's how it is with hacking too :p

You should get back into it. I love writing fanfiction, myself, although I find it hard to complete stories.
I know what you mean about finding it hard to complete things, whether stories or hacks or any kind of project. If I had a nickel for every project I've legitimately finished, I doubt I could buy a can of store-brand soda. Oh well, trying to work on changing that. I keep saying I'm going to get back into writing, maybe one of these days I actually will. I'll let you know if/when it happens!

Yeah, it's crazy how these freemium developers are able to get away with charging loads of cash for such blatant ripoffs.

As Nintendo starts to dip its own toes into the freemium market, we might start seeing them bring lawsuits down on the developers of Super Monster Bros, Pokedan Monsters, Micromon, Little Masters, and all 8 million of the other cheap knockoffs lurking in the App Store.
As much as I don't like the idea of Nintendo getting into the Freemium thing, I do think it would be nice if it means a lot of these ripoffs getting shutdown. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but it makes sense to me somehow.

Yeah, it's ultimately your decision, and if you don't feel like Marill can work, then don't include her. We'll see what happens.
/me adds a cheatcode where if you name yourself Tracey, your starter is Marill and your sprite is Tracey. (not really).

If it's this card, then it could be worth as much as $90.00!

Error cards are always worth a lot. Most of them were quickly recalled and fixed, so there are very few of them out there, and rarity=value. For example, while a Movie 2000 promo Ancient Mew is just about worthless, the Japanese version that was released a year earlier with a misspelling of Nintendo as "Nintedo" can net you as much as $90.00.
I do have a rainbow energy, but not sure if that's it. I was thinking it was a gym card, like Rocket's Minefield Gym or something like that (I forget the exact name, been years since I actually looked through and saw it, so not sure if that's even the right card) but it makes me wanna pull my cards out and have a look one day when I have a chance, for sure!

That's a pretty neat story idea. I think Kris deserves far more love, anyways. So far, you've treated her much better than GF ever did.
Thanks! I think if/when I start back writing, that's probably what I'll start with. I've always thought Kris needed more love than GF gave her, especially when they replaced her in HGSS.

    Yeah, you've certainly become famous.

I guess the Crystal Onix, itself, was so popular that it completely overshadowed the COTDs, which isn't completely surprising. For the most part, the human characters always played second-fiddle to the Pokémon in the anime, for better or worse.
That makes sense though, especially in this case. Mateo was a generic glass maker who wanted inspiraction. Crystal Onix was cool and fueled rumours because people wanted to catch one.

I don't like redesigns that fundamentally change what the character was originally about. Blaine's supposed to be a hot-headed quiz-master scientist, not a glorified Gentleman in khakis with a derby hat and cane. And, Sabrina's supposed to be a strong, mysterious young woman, not some bimbo in a halter-top and hip-huggers. And, Lance is supposed to be this strong, yet kind, vibrant, and sexy young man, not a tired, aloof 50 year old. And, Karen is supposed to be this mysterious, witchy young woman, not some bimbo in bright yellow. I could go on and on...

And, that's why, on the flip-side, I liked Morty and Pryce's redesigns. Their original designs made them look more like beach bums than the characters they were supposed to be, so the new outfits actually worked. Unfortunately, it seems like HGSS had more misses than hits when it came to character design, overall.
I can agree with almost all of those. But Blaine still doesn't bother me as much, since at least in the anime he wasn't even showing off that he was a gym leader in public, but then again his alter ego was a long-haired beach bum in the anime, so totally opposite from the classy gentleman look. And it doesn't make a lot of sense to look like a million bucks when your gym is in a cave...
